Blyton Park Track day - 3rd August - From

Featured Replies

From Memory (quite old now, Colin entering his 5th decade shortly!))  a 3db rise in sound level equates to a doubling of perceived/ received sound (noise)

Db is measured logarithmically so is a bit hard to equate in reality.  Also externally measured the frequency is distance dependant - you can stand by a busy road and it's noisey then move say 10yds away and not hear it!  Also topography can affect but as it's an airfield that should not be an issue.

Wind direction and speed adds or subtracts as well.

I can do a good line in spuds and ear defenders (spuds in tail pipe, ear defenders round lugs)

Richard at Blyton said as much as Richard (bossFox) confirmed above. Drive by setup as above equates very roughly to old school Db mic at exhaust 3/4qtrs rev of 105.

Spuds in tail pipe = black flag.

How many spaces are left?

Plenty, 30 full slots. But my next post will hopefully shake that up.

Update:

I've had a chat with Blyton, partly to advise of any changes and numbers.

What came from that is this:

If you do not want to book a whole day, just half a day ( £60 ) you can!

This is not a move to sessions, it's still an open pit format.

To get a half day pass you'll need to email me> colin @ briskoda.net. I'll balance these half days against remaining full days. So if you want to have a go, but not the full day, then this could be a viable option. Email me with a pm/am slot preference, 5 of each initially. Plenty of full day passes left.

Briefing still at 9am regardless + sighting laps. 10 -> 13:00 << Lunch & competitions >> 14:00 -> 17:30.

For those booked on the full day, no impact. In fact given I was already curtailing the numbers the track will be pretty quiet most of the day. Most co'#s book this out at 50 on track, it can technically do 60 with almost no waiting... I had setup 45 to allow for any special guests and a open circuit. A nice guest has just pulled out due to a belt skipping a cog on a mkII escort, not with extra bits in the engine :(

So far only 15 booked on. If you know anyone who wants a track day, please do tell them. It's open to all, makes for a more interesting day too :)

Shocked people are not crawling all over this already.

Less than half the price of typical track time + other forum members + people willing to passenger and help out newbies.

For anyone that's even considering doing a track taster session or driving close to the car's limits in a safe enviroment to see what it can do this is an absolute bargain!

Where is everyone ???

I'm a complete first timer and I'm in, for all the reasons from BossFox.

Just do it! It's a bucket list job for me.

A fantastic offer and great value, also it is good support the fantastic forum that is Briskoda on the annual national meet.

Hmmm...two track sessions in August...??? Hmmmmmmm....Decisions Decisons...

Go on Slotty you know you want to!

I do....I Really Really Do...:)

I do....I Really Really Do...:)

Do it! ;)

Need to wait til Saturday and will make a decision. My car needs to be fully checked before I commit to this as it developed some knocking noise and I need to find out if this is serious or not and if it can be sorted before the 3rd I'll defo book this...;)

Lowered suspension - done!

Brembo pads - still waiting for delivery

Federal RS-R's - waiting for funds

Overall readines level 30%

Do it Matty :)

Pistonheads say I can't promote the event on there because RMA is their track partner, but if someone just posts on there that they are going then it won't get deleted (probably be frowned upon for Colin to do it though!). Alternatively are there any other VAG forums you could post it on? I will post it on ClioSport if you want, but it would be more in keeping with the day to have mostly VAG cars there. Shame more Briskoda members haven't signed up yet, the price is great value and it seems to be a good track for beginners, with a few track regulars on hand for advice.

Will the brembo pads be up for track work? Something like Ferodo DS2500 or Mintex 1144 are good track pads. Fluid is very important too - I use ATE super blue.

Reading the above 'be up for track work'......

As a newbie to tracks I'm bringing my bog standard VRS oil burner along.

Plan to do short stints through the day and only 3 or 4 stints probably.

Do I 'need' to do any prep other than check oil level, tyre pressure / brake pad wear?

I treating it as a mad country road blast with all cars going in the same direction. (mad = under control by the way)

Standard brake pads/fluid will probably only last a few laps before the pedal gets soft, so long as you come off the track to cool down as soon as you notice it then it's not a problem, but trying to drive round the track with cooked brakes is not a good idea. It sounds like you have the right approach so I'm sure you will be fine! As brake fluid gets older it absorbs water and the temperature at which it boils will be reduced, so if your car has old fluid in then it would be worth getting it changed beforehand.

Tyre pressures should be reduced before going on track - once the tyres warm up the pressure will increase by around 5psi. I would start with dropping the pressures a few psi from normal road pressures, then check the 'hot' pressures after your first few laps. I'll be taking my digital tyre pressure gauge and foot pump so that I can adjust pressures during the day. Happy to use them to help others adjust their pressures, though I would recommend buying your own digital gauge anyway as they are only about £10 (mine is an AA one from Amazon) and save the hassle of having to find a petrol station with an air machine.

Edit: Don't forget to RSVP here:

Cheers for that VRSTom. Very helpful and non alarmist!

Already RSVP'd.

AA Digital tyre pressure gauge ordered - Damn you Amazon Prime!

Worth a try on them two above.

Brembo pads are the ones made with their new HP2000 abrasive material.

Some info on them here

http://www.motorsportworld.co.uk/frame-detail.asp?PAGE=/brembo-brakes.htm

DS2500 arenot road legal and have woeful cold performance despite being allegedly very good on track so out of the question.

Mintex 1144 does not seem to be offering 2012 vRS fitment-not on their website or deamon-tweaks and did not hear anything about this product really :)

I have racing brake fluid, I think it was Gulf RF 800

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-69355-gulf-competition-rf800-racing-brake-fluid.aspx - survived few track days during which my brakes were almost on fire :D.

I will heve 12v ciggy lighter Michelin tyre inflator with electronic gauge as well as stand alone electronic one as well. Worth playing with tyre pressures, makes large difference, especially in the wet

I'll have a decent little compressor from my offroading days.

Tje more the merrier :) I will also bring 3t jack and axle stands while I am at it :) Is worth bringing a gazebo (small one) and some picnic chairs? Car fridge for cold drinks would no go amiss either I suppose?

I am thinking here national meet as well as track day. Problem I have is would there be a safe place to keep all that junk when I am on track - not keen on recreating Topgear caravan style racing with all that kit weighing me down/flying around the cabin :D.

With regard to standard brakes: I did a track day in my standard Felicia a couple of years ago, and the road pads and fluid coped very well !!. I had however, fitted some excellent drilled and grooved discs from MTEC brakes, on Ebay, at £40 a pair: just to help keep the pads a bit cooler. Admittedly, my 1.3 Felicia never topped the 100MPH mark on track, so those of you with VRSs and similar fast cars will probably be working your brakes a bit harder than I did, and should consider upgrading. I haven't changed the discs or pads on my Felicia yet, and they have passed both MOTs since!. I would certainly recommend the whole track day experience, and i am hoping to be able to get a full day on track at the national meet, but I have to change the clutch on my car before then, so cost might become an issue. But i'll certainly make it to the meeting at least!. One other thing that I would advise anyone who is going on track: is to carry out an oil and filter change, either before or very soon after the event, as repeatedly heating and quickly cooling your engine oil will have a marked effect on even semi-synthetic oils.

Factoru standard mk2 vRS brakes are useless on track - nothing left after circa 15 hard braking events.

As for the oil it depends. If you are running high performance sports lube then there is no need, they are designed for that:). Esther based purpose designed molecules of racing oils do not degrade. However if Castrol 5W30 Professional III is trying to lubricate your twincharger engine then indeed, you will have to change the oil, provided anything will be left :(.
