Bl&&dy start/stop problems again :(

Featured Replies

It's no big secret that I think SS on the DSG-equipped cars is a complete pile of poo and more trouble than it's worth (my opinion - I know other disagree) so I always override it when I start the engine.  If it was linked to the handbrake then it would make sense but it's not (duh....so obvious but they didn't do it).

Today at traffic lights the engine cut out as I went to move off. I always put it in Neutral and hold the car on the handbrake.  This is how I was taught to drive and it stops the poor sod behind being dazzled by my brake lights so please don't tell me to hold it on the brakes because I'm not going to do that. Also I won't put it in Park as often I need to roll forward (a lot of hills here - and some of them go down as well as up!) and from Park it often doesn't start by itself.

Anyway, I noticed this issue a while ago but thought that maybe I didn't hit the button so today when I got to work I turned it off, then re-inserted the key to see what would happen.

I pressed the SS cancel button....light came on, then went off.  Did it again and it went off again. 3rd time it stayed on.  I tried this about 20 times and on 4 occasions it did the same.  I tried cancelling straight away, waiting a few seconds  etc but it didn't seem to matter - it just didn't accept the command to override.

Has anyone else noticed this 'feature' ?

Don't know much about DSGs but in my manual I can just put the car in Neutral and have no foot on any pedal and it will stop, I don't need to keep my foot on the brake. Is this bad for safety? Is a DSG the same as an automatic?

I've never had SS on a manual so can't comment

DSG is automatic but uses clutches instead of a torque converter plus flappy paddles in F1 stylee

Works just perfect for me on the 2.0TSI DSG. Have had no issues with SS from day 1. Although I don't use the handbrake like you do... Engine stops when I am stopped and have foot "hard" on break. Starts immediately when I release the break. If I just put my foot a little on the break at stand still the engine does not shut off....

Have never tried to switch SS off since it works so well...

Terry

As Terry's with same engine/gearbox. No problems, works every time.

Unlike a manual focus I had on loan a year ago.never knew if it was going to start until I tried to pull away.

Never realized that such a little gimmick can cause that level of frustration for someone.

In any case, I would recommend to just keep it simple and keep the foot on the brake very lightly. This will stop the car from rolling and keeps the engine running.

As for the brake light issue, I'd rather see a few brighter lights than having to wait for the driver in front of me to mess around with putting the car into D and releasing handbrake, potentially resulting in one or the other being forgotten. ;)

We should do a poll on this.

My stop/start seems to be fine, stop at traffic lights, it kicks in, I change to park take my foot off the brake and wait, as soon as it goes back into drive and I take my foot off brake it kicks in, all good in the hood!

Smeghead, its obvious that you're style of driving doesn't suit you car, changing one of them will alleviate the problem...

Driving styles are very cheap to change unlike cars which arn't, the choice is of course YOURS

I relation to OP's problem with the Start/Stop not de-activating when he pressed the button.  I had the same problem once.  Pressed the button to de-activate it only to find at the next stop the S/S stopped the engine.

I was only playing around with it at the time to see how it worked. I now just let the S/S do its thing.

Ta - not just mine then. I'm glad that at least one person got the point   ;) - the issue is not whether SS is good, bad or indifferent, it's the fact the button quite often fails to disengage the SS system.

Thanks for all the comments but as I said, I ain't a-changin' not because I'm a belligerent old bugger (even though that description fits me to a tee) but because Park won't let me roll forward when I need to, light braking keeps the clutches engaged (so they'll wear out), to re-engage Drive means putting your foot on the brake which often stalls the car just as I want to drive off (and I personally hate brake lights in front of me in a stationary queue of cars) and I am capable, despite my old age, of engaging Drive and releasing the handbrake as quickly as the next bloke.

The start stop button should always disengage the system. It's required for certain situations for safety, and also written in the manual as such, eg water crossings.

I hate the SS. I drive a 1.6 DSG and often wish I could perm switch it off, but to answer the Op if I do use the SS button, It always works.

There's a section in the 'Octavia III VCDS Adaptations - tried and tested' pinned to the top of the homepage that details how to disable it.

Wasn't there a software update issued to resolve this issue? I believe andyvee had the same problems and he took his car back to the dealer twice and it was on the second visit that they installed a revised bit of software and it cured it.

Best bet is contact andyvee, he'll explain it.

It took more than 2 visits (more like 4 or 5), but the second software update update cured mine, but it was a different issue, I had Start Stop indicating an error and just being permanently disabled.

I can only say that stop start works 100% on my vRS diesel DSG. It saves me no end of fuel. But then, I don't mess around putting into N or P. My car goes through stop start around 50 times a day and the only thing that could be described as slightly annoying is the feeling of the agricultural engine starting - and that is no where near as annoying as sitting for 2-5 mins with the engine running and going nowhere.

Mine works perfectly now as well.

Jeez, Weekends aside that's 1000 starts a month / 12000 a year.  How long will your starter and ring gear last?

Probably the life of the car.

I'd noticed an agricultural sound on my TSI DSG when the engine kicks in after a stop-start start-up.  For a moment it sounds like a diesel which given my particular ordering problems made me wonder for a fleeting moment whether I have got a diesel after all (until I remember that I've been roaring about on 2 tanks of petrol since Saturday!).

But I like stop-start too.  I agree that I'd prefer not to be dazzling the driver behind me with unnecessary brake lights.  But what I really like is that I can pretty much choose whether or not to stop the engine by varying the pressure I put on the brake pedal.  I haven't tried using the S-S cancel button though.  Haven't really felt the need - but I'll try it to see if it works properly.

One thing that really annoys me on this new VRS is inability to switch off that damn start-stop system. I think it should have been implemented the way that by default it is off and if you want you can activate it. Or it could activate automatically in ECO mode. It is actually not very good for the engine to start and stop constantly. And for some reason even if i gently press the break pedal it still shuts down.

There are changes made to accommodate the increased stop/start cycles like a beefed up starter motor although I guess any real problems will only appear after many, many years.

Wear and tear..... good luck!

Probably the life of the car.

I sincerely hope so......... If it's built to last, say, 5 years then when it goes it'll be a biggish job (i.e. expensive - as in maybe 10 times as much as the fuel saving the SS would give you) to repair

I agree it should be switched off as default - or at least have it so it latches rather than resetting itself after each trip.   I have the same issue with gentle brake pressure.  As I touch the brake to put the gear in drive to move off, the sodding engine cuts out then immediately restarts.

As above, I really hope so but if it lasts until the warranty runs out (assuming they don't reject any claims for failures under warranty as fair wear and tear) then the owner will face a big bill which will most likely wipe out the saving they made on the fuel.

Anyway, back to the point of the topic.  The button working intermittently. I took the car in to the dealer this morning and it did it 4 times in a row in front of them.  Fingers crossed!

PS.  They lent me a Focus ST.  Nice car to drive but the plastics are so cheap and nasty compared to our steeds' plastic bits.

The S/S system would have be left as default "ON" to maintain the CO2 rating...not to mention the (sometimes comical) quoted mpg figures that cause a certain amount of discussion (!).
