This is NOT an advert (I'm a Freedom member so don't have to cheapskate), but is there anyone who could tell me what my Themistos might be worth?  They're 2009 and two of them have got the lacquer peeling off in a couple of small places + a slight bit of kerb degradation round the rims on all four.  They're completely undamaged, though. I can supply photos on request, but for the moment, I just need a ball-park figure.

 

Secondly, has anyone got any pictures of a black Superb with coloured/modded alloys?  It's very difficult to guess what the car will look like.

As for prices, I've been watching for a while and seen a few sets of 4 go for around £200.  I bought a set myself for £220 for the winter.  A lot of people seem to overvalue them, but you can get them new for £155 +vat each

Ned, had the same dilemma and did the following: sold Themistos for £450 cash (1 had laquer peel, 3 were ok. 2 tyres 6mm and 2 tyres 2mm all Conti.) Then bought set of Golus 18 wheels with tyres from main dealer, 2k miles on them, basically brand new with 7mm+ tread on all 4 Conti's. Cost £577 inc delivery. Cost to change £127 for 4 new alloys and 4 new tyres - no brainer!

Great trading there!  That looks to be the way to go, though I will keep my present tyres.  There are some lovely looking wheels out there.

Thanks for that, Martin.  I agree Chris's look special, but if I'm handing over £300, I want a radically new look. As I said in the previous post, I think the Themistos look a bit... vanilla.

Well, that's answered your question then, buying new it is. Personally, I think buying in the £400 range for a set of 18" alloys could be a bit of a lottery. Naturally there are horror stories about these cheaper alloys cracking, some completely from the hub, but you'll also find examples of manufacturer supplied alloys cracking too. Albeit, not so catastrophically as some of the aftermarket examples.

It's a fact that some of the aftermarket ones cut corners and are not as good quality as manufacturer supplied. The problem is that some are, and will serve you well without issues, but how do you tell? - most of these cheaper alloys are retailed without any manufacturer source info, so often it's impossible to tell which ones are ok or not.

So if I was in your shoes I'd spend a bit more, 40-50%, and get an aftermarket set from a manufacturer that gains TUV, full JWL approval for their alloys/factory, ones like MSP, Ronal, TSW etc.

You'll have quite a lot of options still, and you should be able to pick up a set as good as OEM quality for £500-600.....

You should be able to get a set of Dezent alloys for this sort of money. I believe that with a little extra money Borbet should be achievable as well. Also, depending on the pattern you want, you should be able to get something from Enzo, DOTZ, etc.

Are you serious?  Given that peanut18 sold his (with rubber, admittedly) for £450, I think £200's a tad on the low side.  If I swapped the unused spare for one of the peeling ones, you'd have 1 brand new, 2 very good and one with a bit of lacquer peel.  You might want to see photos of course, but one possible deal is that I drive them up to Sheffield for you for £275 all in...

Hmmm...They look.......like they'd show any scratch and would be expensive to refurb.....if you got those you'd be parking so far away from the curb to avoid scratching them that you'd need to call a cab to take you to the pavement.....

No idea on ZCW, Wolfrace have been around for years though. I remember using them for rallying on a 1275GT as a teenager in the late 80's, as the minilites used to eventually buckle from getting airborne. so I assume from being around for ~30 years they must be doing something right

I wouldn't worry about buying polished alloys like the ones in your link. If you coat them with a readily available sealant, and then top up every 4-6 months, you won't have any issues with brake dust/winter salt corrosion. Personally, a polished alloy looks just as bad as a painted alloy when damaged, so I don't get the logic behind staying away from them. The two Themisto alloys on mine that don't have pothole and keeping damage look as good as new. The damaged ones also show no sign of the damage causing widespread delamination of the top coat.
