Bog Standard Mk1 Exhaust

Featured Replies

This may sound like a bonkers question.  I have a 1.9TDi bog standard Mk1 Octavia 1998.

Out of everything that I have every replaced I have never needed to replace the exhaust, the car has done 198,000 miles and it's fine.  Other cars I have had I have gone through 2 or more bits of exhaust.

As I say my car is just a simple standard Octavia so not one of the swish modded things I read so much about.

Anyway just wondered what makes the exhaust last so long?

This is a good question. My mk1 vrs is a 51 2001 and still on its original exhaust!

Just better made?

Better made in my opinion too. Only changed mine for a Piper non-resonated for a bit more noise(vrs one is far too quiet) old one is tucked away should I ever want to sell the car.

- I'm tempting fate here - my 1.8T 4x4 has 160k on it and is still on the original exhaust and clutch

I wondered if the exhausts are stainless or something magical.

Incidentally Fabpreza, my clutch went at abotu 160k ... cost £500 to replace but it was worth it for me

It's a diesel.

Mines is on the original too - It's a 52 plate and was only used for short trips before I got hold of it :-) All i can think of, especially with the 1.8T engine is that the exhaust gases are hotter than usual which clears any moisture out.

Got a spare stock one ready to go on if it ever does break, which seems unlikely...

Mines solid as a rock still too.  13 years old now!

I can't justify replacing mine while its fine. Its gonna end up in my rear view mirror bouncing down the road I know it!!
