Rattle Drives Owner Bonkers......

Featured Replies

Been a bit quiet on here the last few weeks as been on hols enjoying a 2k mile trip around Scotland, Wales and the Cotswolds. The car has behaved impeccably apart from a very annoying rattle that has developed from the rear on anything but the smoothest of road surfaces.

It's difficult to explain but seems to be coming from the area of the offside rear seatbelt reel and sounds quite metallic like a tick, tick sound. I think that generally the interior of the Octy is well screwed together but this rattle is driving me barmy...

Anyone had similar experiences or suggestions?? Might need to resort to the warranty but would rather fix myself as could do without the hassle of booking it in...

I had a similar rattle Jimmy.

Have you checked the rear plastic panel on the inside of the tailgate? Mine was loose on the nearside edge and the metal clip was just touching the frame of the tailgate, hence the rattle. It needed to be pushed up slightly, then pushed hard against the tailgate and pulled down so the clip engaged onto the frame. It still worked itself loose though. I noticed the tailgate flexes quite a lot when you pull on the strap to close it - the offside pulls down by about 3-5mm prior to the nearside catching up! I think it's this flex that couses the clip on the nearside to come adrift. So now I just close it from above with the hand in the centre of the tailgate. No probs since then:p

Or...

Sometimes mine makes a rattle that is cured by unlatching the fold down rear seats and firmly pushing them back into place.

Or...

For the last week or so I've heard a metallic rattle/klang that sounded distinctly suspensiony but also seemed to be inside the car. This was something to be looked at when it's serviced tomorrow. Purely by chance I found the cause yesterday while cleaning the interior. The passenger seat recliner wheel has a good 5mm play 'in and out' (not forward and back). Turned the wheel a bit and it's gone. Something really small making quite a frightening noise.

I agree with Num, the tailgate does flex. Check everything is tight here also.

Sheffield roads and firm suspension do not mix.

Cheers guys. I thought it might be the plastic tailgate cover and did notice that one of the clips was loose. I fixed this and for good measure put some double sided (Blue Peter stylie) tape on both ends but the rattle is still present.

I also drove around for a while with the rear seats down to see whether this had any effect but to no avail. The hunt continues........

Num,

Just been and had a look. My panel had unclipped itself too!

Get it down to your retailer for them to investigate Jimmy. This is more common than may appear, and is usually easily found and resolved.

Failing that, wear earmuffs!

I'm allowed to watch telly til 10 and everything....

Jimmy, I also have a rear end rattle (oooeer). I think mine is down to a leaking tailgate strut (wobbles when the tailgate is open) which I will have replaced at next service under warranty. Another source of rattle I had was the pipe for the rear washer, which started working its way loose and then eventually came adrift. I had to remove the trim panel mentioned by numskull and replaced the pipe firmly. No repeat as yet, but I do use the strap so I'll check my trim panel again tomorrow.

Cheers,

I thought I had a rattle in the back. Turned out it was the rear speakers making their half-hearted attempt to produce bass.

Good point about the rear washer tubing as in a desperate attempt to solve I've taken the hatch trim panel off and noticed that the wiring harness et al is rather loose. I'll cable tie up and see whats what.

Interesting idea re: ear muffs but suspect I'd look somewhat gay. Therefore suggest some industrial strength ear defenders.....

First thing to do is to take everything out of the car and see if that makes any difference - I had an occasional squeaking until one day I noticed the handle of my briefcase was making exactly the same noise as I walked through the office.......!! In between times the garage had changed a couple of stabilisers in an attempt to solve the problem - fortunately they only cost about a fiver each.

I had a similar problem, it was the overcentre cam that holds the base of the rearseat back in position - fold the seatback down and push the cam down as far as it will go and then push the seatback back in position, I usually have to do this whenever I have folded the seats down!

For those trims rattle www.vagparts.com sell some anti-rattle foam. Basically it's that foam with sticky tape on the other side.

Costs a couple of quid.

My only small squeak comes from the dash, above the central air vents. It only really annoys me when I have mum in the car (and the radio off) - When I'm on my own the NTS NTS NTS drowns it out. :D

It would be nice to be able to get something shoved behind the dash to stop it once & for all!

I have exactly the same rattle you describe, I was told it probably was the rear seat fixings, but my local dealer have had two attempts at fixing it - slight improvement initially then back the way it was within about 100 miles. Driving me nuts too. Good luck ! :)

i had a very similar problem, after 5 visits to the dealer, they called some expert from skoda uk. he advised to change one of the rear shocks. hey presto a lovly quiet car.

hope this helps. jon

Little Bu@@ers aren't they....:D

We had a nasty rattle from the back for sometime. Eventually I lost patience and had a fidle. Pulled off the plastic tailgate liner, the bit where the closing strap hangs, thinking I'd wrecked it but got it back on and hey presto, no rattle:cool:

Jimmy,

Presumably you've tried moving the height adjustment of the rear belt? (Are they height adjustable in the RS? Can't be arsed to go outside and look.)

Plus bonus rattle feature!

I'd had a very annoying vibration/rattle thing going on at the back of the car. I'd been meaning to get a little piece of sticky back something or other to shove under one side of the rear number plate for ages because it had come a little loose ie lost its stickiness. Stuck some on yesterday and hey presto, vibration stopped. The noise which I was convinced was coming from the tailgate was actually coming from out side the car.

Don't think they can be adjusted.

Has someone just moved this thread or have I had too much Jack Daniels already? It's only ten to seven......

No. Regardless, you found it, Rich, so what's the problem? Eh? rolleyes.gif

Denis, you're messing with a mind that is addled enough already.
