Back in February I bought a set of HIDs from London Colour in the hope of fitting them to my Octavia. There is wealth of knowledge and substantial thread on how to fit and code HIDs via VCDS so I thought the chance of not having any problems was fairly slim. Unfortunately, I was to be proved wrong. I fitted the HIDs without really any problems, but then the first issue was a flat battery (although unrelated to any issues with the HIDs, just an inconvenient time to occur). Any ways, after having replacing the battery a trip was made to a local member with VCDS.

 

Loaded up VCDS and low and behold no option for Xenons without shutters! Typical..! The option for cold light diagnostics was turned off in the hope it would allow them to function and no switch off. However, after clearing the codes and driving a couple of miles home they switched off. Which wasn't good, since it was dusk and I had 15 miles to drive home. After this, I decided to go back to standard -- until now!

 

Couple of weeks ago, spoke with xpower, followed by andyvee and finally, but most importantly mikeholroyd. Arranged to meet (yesterday) and kindly offered to help resolve my HID issues. Mike was undeterred by the previous attempt and set to work his VCDS magic. The Xenons without shutter option was missing but the cold light diagnostics was still enabled individually for the low beam. After disabling this and enabling many other great features; dual rear fog lights, blip on lock - Mike had an ingenious idea of comparing the values with one of his Octavia's to see how Byte 3 compared. Bit 4 was selectable which was missing on my Octavia. Without a way of enabling it via VCDS 12.12, Mike had yet another genius idea to use the latest BETA version which allows you to enable any bit. Low and behold by doing this, the Byte 3, Bit 4 was set and coding was successful! Finally step was to install the HIDs, which Mike kindly offered to do and cross our fingers they would work.

 

The moment of truth, started the car and switched on the low beam -- we have light! After 5 minutes they were still on and rock solid, no flickering. Great success!! :clap:

 

An absolute pleasure to meet you Mike and many thanks for all your help and assistance, an absolute credit to Briskoda and one of the many reasons I love to be part of a community of enthusiasts. I'll certainly be back in the future for retrofitting of cruise control   Oh and I now crave more power/economy

I must apologies for the photos as they were actually taken when I first installed them back in February which evidently shows the cold light diagnostic issue with the LED sidelights at the time. Well spotted though! Thankfully I can report is all working 100% correctly now. Although Mike enabled the North American light setting which means the dipped lights are switched on only when lights are switched off. They function as normal on all other settings.

 

Is this worthwhile improvement would you say?

 

The difference is literally night and day (no pun intended!) I can see very little difference with full beam (need to upgrade the bulbs as very yellow) but in terms of light output - nice and crisp white light. It's less tiring to drive at night and much better illumination which from a safety aspect is very important.

I did tell him he would have to do it manually by editing the binary if the tick box was missing from that label file for that controller, but Mike found a different way of achieving the same result.

 

Having 2 Octy II's of his own to compare the coding to was the only way anyone could have solved this, well done Mike!
