DIY 6 Speed DSG Oil & Filter Change

Featured Replies

Exactly. So long as the seller of a car doesn't seem a complete numpty, and has kept the receipts for oil etc, then I know it's been serviced using the right bits.

I wonder if this stuff is any good?

  • I've just done my DSG gear oil change.   On a difficulty rating of 1 to 10 (10 being the hardest) I'd say it was about 3. No harder than doing an engine oil change.   The fiddliest bit was removin

  • As Phil said, his dealer quoted him £169. My local VAG independent quoted £150 so there is still quite a saving doing it yourself

  • Comma oil is a very good product i work for Dorset Auto Spare and they are our main supplier now high recommended we sell 5 ltr of that for £42.54 so thats not a bad price

Never heard of that one!

I'd either just go for genuine VAG or the Comma stuff tbh.

The price of £48.54 delivered is good. So add on the £15 for the filter and seals... bargain!

I can do a full service and DSG oil change for less than a dealer would charge for just a service!

Ah I didn't see that reply.

Comma oil it is then :)

£48.54 delivered

Is there a number I can call to order this please?

Yeah my number at my branch Wimborne Dorset 01202 887471 my name is kelby im the assistant Manager

Yeah that's the only thing that puts me off. Ours currently has full dealer history.. but then we plan to keep the car for the foreseeable future and so hopefully by the time we come to sell it won't make so much of a difference in price and the money I will have saved with DIY servicing will outweigh this.

I think as long as you can prove it's been done and serviced when it should have been using genuine/quality parts and service items then it shouldn't reflect too badly on the sale price in how ever many years to come.

Phil

Yeah i think thats important i keep all paperwork for anything i buy for her... if my cart was alot order i would be doing it myself but being 2011 i think dealer is the way as i will only keep the car for few years and then i upgrade to something else maybe a new octy VRS

Ok. It's crunch time for me now.

My car is now almost at 40,000 miles after our trip to Germany (where it performed faultlessly even with a couple of laps round the Nurburgring!).

Did you ever get round to doing the change on yours Softscoop?

Yes and no. I got it changed, but I didn't do it myself.

A bit of a mix up at the garage when in for the cambelt meant it got done at the same time.

I enquired about the price for cambelt and DSG oil change. I got it booked in saying can we get the cambelt done without thinking to specifically state that I didn't want the DSG oil doing at the same time.

They were alright about it and only charged me for parts, so didn't work out that much more than if I'd done it myself.

They used 5.3L doing the bottom fill method.

He did recommend that if doing it through the top to still measure the temps with VCDS and let off the excess as normal.

Ah fair dos.

It worked out ok for you in the end then!

I will maybe get 6 litres then just in case.

I think I will drain the oil. See how much comes out. If it's about the right amount I'll put the same back in (shouldn't be low or anything unless any signs of a leak).

Suppose I better buy the oil and filter then and get it done!

Any difference in the way it drives after the change?

It was never jerky or anything but I'm fairly convinced that upshifting in manual is slightly smoother.

No mine isn't either... was just curious! :D

I think I would like to use genuine oil and have found 6 litres of oil and a filter with seals for £75.

That's a really good price.

Wow... that's expensive!

Most dealers seem to charge £169 for it.

Hi there, thought I would put this up on here just incase it helps anyone after advice given me on my thread concerning gear box/engine service.engine oil off eBay quantum 3 fully synthetic longlife £27.95 then for the rest of the bits I went to t.p.s dsg gear box oil go52182a2 £56.93 gear box filter £10.51 engine oil filter £3.51 air filter £8.58 sump nut £1.87 and air filter £13.07 Total - ( £141.34 ) hope this is of some help cheers kev. P.s just have to find the time to do it all now lol

Edited by Kevgem

Yes. I'm the same. Buying it is easy... just need to find time!

I'm already over 40k miles now and won't have the oil till some time this week. Then we're having a party next Saturday and off to my grans 80th birthday on Sunday (another 100 miles)...

Phil

£279.53 ...wow really expensive. Manufacturer labour time is 54 minutes . Some dealers like to do a basic setting as well so will obviously charge a bit more labour for the extra spent time.

I've just done my DSG gear oil change.

On a difficulty rating of 1 to 10 (10 being the hardest) I'd say it was about 3. No harder than doing an engine oil change.

The fiddliest bit was removing the air filter and battery.

I followed this guide:

http://www.myturbodiesel.com/wiki/dsg-fluid-drain-and-replacement-service-vw-and-audi-stronic-oil-flush/

Which is very good and accurate. Just make sure you have all the tools to hand that it lists in the guide as they are pretty big/odd ball sizes. Luckily I had all the tools needed.

I'd say the only thing I can add to that guide is my method of filling the gearbox.

Here was my set-up:

DSC_0635_zps0fzasmhh.jpg

I used a normal funnel I already had into a small section of tubing I already had that fit perfectly over the filter connection perfectly. If you don't have a tube right round this hole to force the fluid straight in then it will take even longer to fill the box. Just pouring the oil straight into the filter housing resulted in the oil trickling in very slowly. Using this pipe on the funnel dramatically sped up the process.

Old vs new filter:

Old oil:

New oil:

And a picture showing at what mileage I have done the change:

Looks like a good job done there :)

Did you check the temps and let off the excess Phil?

Just done all of the filters and oils and all I can say is have a go your self if stamped service history is not important just make shore you have the right tools to hand.and like what has already been said the most fiddliest bit was taking the battery and tray out lol and putting the gearbox oil back in from the top is a bit like watching paint dry but that's ok it just gives you a bit of time to mule over what you are doing and make shore you are doing it right lol car now running nice and smooth with nice smooth gear changess ( fingers crossed ) atb kev.

No I didn't. As I drained out exactly 4.5 litres which is what is supposed to come out.

I just put the same back in plus 0.10l.

I've updated the title of this thread so it's more useful for future searches :)

Well I'm not sure if it's just a placebo effect but the gearbox seems much smoother after the oil change. It's never been rough or jerky but it does seem even better.

Also my other half (who pays no attention to how the car drives, noises etc) commented earlier that the car felt a bit nippier when setting off.

I went out in it earlier and at one point used a bit of gas on a roundabout. It really did feel nippy and 2nd gear seemed to engage really well. Almost as if the clutch bit nice and hard (but not rough) and I was off!

Engine oil change next weekend so the car will be running like a dream!
