Poor fuel consumption?

Featured Replies

First frosty morning has affected my economy for following this thread. The 1.2 tsi def doesnt like cold mornings where its sat there on defrost. I set off this morning with my average all the way down at 30mpg and by the time i got to work i "just" got to 50 which is poor for me :-( And this was driving very carefully so they dont like the cold :-(

  • I believe that you keep focusing on the wrong thing (gauge position) and still ignoring what's really important (avg consumption).   Anyway, when you refuel the car, you will be a able to calculate

  • Yeh poss its like everything though, its how you drive it. If you want to do 70-80 on the motorway the diesel im sure will be WAYYYYY ahead of the tsi. However i reckon at 55-60 there won't be much in

  • Hi, Just did over 300miles up / down the A9 to Inverness (+drive up to ski slope at Aviemore) and all around Inverness area + some hairy single track roads :peek:   Car is Rapid 1.4TSI DSG   The

An update to this.

I popped into my dealer on the way to work to ask him about the consumption. Whilst talking to him he was sat in my car with the engine running and he spotted the fuel gauge fluctuating on idle. He checked it on there machine as a matter of course no faults. He's going to order a new instrument cluster to be fitted to it. So I think me checking the gauge was a good thing :)

It was reading 49.7 mpg when he saw it and was sure it was the gauge faulty.

I wish I were getting them MPG out of my 1.2 TSI...

I must admit I am really shocked at what I get to a full take (around 355 miles) & that is a tank that is full and petrol going up the tube that delivers the fuel to the tank!

Sounds about the same as mine but the gauge is wrong so can't be accurate.

Nobody's mentioned the aircon penalty.  I reckon to have been losing 3mpg in the summer from AC, as well as 3-5 mpg from the 215/17s - no wonder I cant get the factory figures.

In winter using the aircon to demist guzzles fuel - just cold start it with aircon on & off and see the difference in idle speeds!

If you're getting 49.7 indicated the range full to empty is 596 miles - no need to fill up at 350-400 :)

I've turned mine off and just using regular old fashioned blowers. Managed to get 47.3mpg on the way home tonight. I have the teeny 15" alloys on mine

Hmmm I average 35mpg. At most doing long stretch motorway journey I had it at about 40. Never use aircon. Not sure if this is just down to the fact I always hit the damn traffic. :(

I have stopped looking one day i get 38 day after 47  7 miles same time same trip same temp

I got 41 mpg as best on the way home last night with air con, hrw.

Going to work in daytime with no air con, lights etc it read 49.7 mpg.

My gauge is constantly rising and falling so it's being replaced in a weeks time.

Traffic kills the mpg on this little engine.

If I don't stop during my commute i get about 50/52mpg indicated.  Every time I stop and go up through the gears costs about 1 mpg on this 25 mile trip.

Yep completely agree! When I hit road works things go downhill fast. As long as you can keep it moving leaving it in top gear its fantastic. Again I guess it is a very small engine to be getting rolling what is actually quite a long car.

It is lighter than the Fabia ll

I think you notice more of a hit on mpg now we are getting some really cold mornings/evenings. Most other car forums I frequent mention mpg more this time of year.

I'm sort of in the finding out process with my car, it's been up to 50mpg average and as low as mid 30's just on very short stop/start type of journeys.

Based on this morning normal commute at about 50 mph on a/b roads - cold start at +2C

At 4 miles out average was 35 mpg

At 8 miles   46 mpg

At 20 miles 51 mpg

Then it gets all stop start and starts to decrease again.

Is it? I guess mine aint though pram in the boot and 2 child seats hehe

Definitely have a faulty gauge. I'm on half full. Just been to Shell to brim it. Only would take 17 litres and £21 for the last 150 miles which equals 40mpg. Glad it's being sorted next Monday :)

Just picked it up.

All scanned no faults found. They didn't replace the instrument cluster as an SUK tech said it would be the sender which was tested no fault found. They reconnected and tightened the connector on the sender unit then was a case of see how you get on blah blah blah.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well after waiting and waiting to get some more fuel in the tank (I don't go out much :D ) I've finally done a few sums aided by the thingy below (sig) and it ain't bad for a new engine, in winter just potting around locally and the very rare longer run out. Rarely use the stop/start and aircon on most of the time. Second partial fill up since I bought the car, 425 miles covered so far. I reckon the Citigo was only doing around 10mpg more than this on similar usage, ie local trips. :p

I filled mine up for the first time to check last week and I am averaging 44.4mpg. that's a load of 3 mile journeys to work in freezing conditions and a few evenings sitting with the engine running until the windows cleared. Maybe 3 30 mile motorway and city journeys.

Beats the 33 or 34 mpg I was getting with the Civic

Mine worked out overall to be 45mpg which I think is terrible for a small 1.2 engine. My friends 2.0tsi does way more than this [emoji19]

Appalling car so far.

Did a fill-up last night as I wanted a full tank over Christmas (need not have worried, local Shell was open and busy this morning).

Achieved a new low - 39mpg. Admittedly I had mostly been doing local driving but still very low.

Poor fuel economy of the MG6 I considered not looking so bad after all :(

Don't forget chaps it's winter, I'm hoping for better figures when it gets milder.

I'm not too disappointed with mine, ok it's a new engine but as I said only around 10mpg less than the Citigo was doing, more or less the same journeys and conditions etc. But then again I didn't think the Citigo was all that impressive, but I never believed the claimed figures anyway.

Must confess though the 1.2 engine does require a light right foot, I suppose being more of a foot to the floor driver will be harsh on the petrol consumption.

Must be a Mansfield thing!!

Mine (Rainworth supplied) averages mid to high 30's, but not overly concerned as it seems reasonable given the relative size of the car and it's mainly short distance urban use. The average speed on the long-term trip meter is around 17 mph.

I'm amazed at some of the claimed MPG's posted on here, but find Fuelly useful for keeping tabs of long-term fuel use - my best is 46 mpg and worst 35 mpg.

I've tracked several of my earlier cars over the last few years:

Each of my old cars achieved nothing like their manufacturer claimed MPG's, but were all reasonable. Interestingly it was the oldest car (2002 4x4 1.8T Octavia) which came closest to it's claimed MPG.

Mine has been averaging 47/48 in the Summer and is now down to about 43/44.   Working at very odd times at Heathrow Airport, my shifts seldom coincide with heavy traffic.   Sometimes I drive on the A329M/M4, sometimes take the M3/M25 but at silly o'clock on a clear, starry very early morning when most normal people are snoring their heads off, the semi-rural roads through Ascot and Virginia Water are a real delight!
