Can You Disable Automatic Door Locking?

Featured Replies

Is it possible to permanently disable, from the car's own menu screen,  the automatic door locking that happens when you drive off?

Yes.

Under Car settings, opening and closing > automatic locking

But why would you want to?

Some people worry that they will be trapped in the car after an accident if the doors cannot be opened from the outside.  My car autolocks but when my wife is in the car she uses the manual switch to unlock it again.

In an accident the doors unlock automatically

I'm the opposite, why would you want the doors to lock as you drive off?

Makes it a lot harder to get car-jacked. Prevents accidental door opening.

If someone is really that worried about being trapped, they should have an escape hammer so they can break the glass if the door can't be opened (whether by locks or physical damage).

Ahhh, got ya. I have kiddie locks on the back for the kids and I don't know of any car jacking having ever occurred in NZ.

It came switched off by default on my car.

Unfortunately not the case over here..... When the wife had her Civic Type-R a few years back they were at the time the most car jacked car in Britain. On the CTR forums the first bit of advice was to buy one of those 12" maglite torches and to keep it in the drivers door bucket. They were a near perfect fit so didn't roll around and annoy whilst driving and were innocent enough to just look like a torch but handy (and being metal) heavy enough to use in self defence if ever required!!!

I've had people try to open the boot when stopped at traffic lights in the past. I also end up carry several thousand pounds worth of work gear sometimes, so the fact that the boot auto locks is very useful.

Well, I disabled it as explained above and am now happy to press the locking button if I feel I am in a dodgy area, which generally I am not.

I also had fun scrolling through the rest of the menus altering things to suit my preferences. I do still prefer to do things for myself, as and when it suits me, rather than to have some electronic Nintendo game decide what it thinks is best for me!!

I've disabled the auto-locking but I'm 90% sure that the boot still locks, as I have to hit the lock button twice when the Missus wants to get her stuff out the boot when I drop her at work.

She may just be useless with handles though.

I love the auto everything, DSG, Lights, wipers, cruise control, big beams and that it steers its self, bring on the auto driving car I say!

How did you disable it?

I also think the side windows drop by around 3 inches in the event of an accident

I always set auto lock on all my vehicles, my wife has Some years ago had 5 people try to open the doors (tried all the handles) when stopped at traffic lights and surrounded by cars so she couldn’t get away, very frightening for her. If she had forgotten to lock the doors who knows what may have happened. These people are very brazen and just don’t care. I suppose they could have put a window through but that may have drawn too much attention. She was beeping the horn but people don’t want to get involved.

It must have been an issue as Birmingham City Council added railings to stop the scrotes hiding in the bushes on Belgrave Middleway.

If you don’t venture into such areas then it doesn’t matter, I’m aware of rural places where they don’t lock their front doors and even leave their keys in the ignition and it’s never an issue!
