Fabia "Classic" front door lock.

Featured Replies

Now then.

I have recently bought a Mk1 Fabia SDI estate from 2002 with a locking problem. I'll post the whole story later, maybe, but it involves me taking the door apart, shutting it and then not being able to get it open to fix or reinstall the window. Idiot. Anyway...

Now I need a passenger's side door catch / lock mechanism, and the supplier that my garage uses has to order them from Germany, which takes time, and they're £70 ish. However, there's a scrapyard near here (Sheffield) that has a couple of Fabias of the right age but they're central locking models. My question is: can I use a lock mechanism from a central locking model Fabia to replace the mechanism from my non-central locking Fabia? I don't know whether the central locking models have the sticky-up bit that you press to lock the door from the inside or not.

Hopefully they're the same but with extra bits which will be redundant, rather than missing bits that I need. Someone here will know, I am sure.

Oh yeah, and how do you disconnect the bit of wire that goes from the door mechanism to the door handle in order to remove the mechanism?

Ta.

Right I've probably got a central locking motor about if you need one but to lock you press the top pin down and unlock open door handle, is that the same as yours?

Precisely, yes.

When you say "motor", do you mean the whole mechanism that bolts on to the inside of the door by 2 big torx bolts? Has a greeny-white bit of plastic that the pin clips in to and a cable that goes to the door handle?

Yes, except this is one isn't greeny white

That's very useful to know. I'll try to get to the scrapyard in the morning with the original to compare. Unless yours is local... how much would you want for it?

I'm in Wales, about £20 posted.

I'll try to find one local in the hope of getting it fixed tomorrow, but will let you know if not. Ta.

You have to remove the lock cylinder. The cable then just unclips. It's best to mark the cable position before releasing it as it is adjustable and needs tensioning correctly.

This was mine when I did it. You can see where I put a white mark on it with Tippex so that I could get the cable near enough in the same place on refitting. The plastic nipple on the end of the cable has serrations on it, and so does the bit on the handle that it presses into.

Thanks, I should have spoken to you lot before I started dismantling stuff!

Ah bugger, the scrapyard that has the fabias doesn't have any locks left.

And I've established that the central locking version of the mechanism on the passenger side is not compatible with a non-central locking car, as the passenger side doesn't have a key lock, so there's no slot in the mechanism for the barrel of the lock to slot in to. The driver's side would probably be compatible, but not the passenger side.

How about ebay? You need part number 6X2837013G (non-central locking).

I bought www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111404278995 which says it's for central locking but actually isn't. Drove to Doncaster and paid £26, not bad considering Skoda wanted about £70 for the part. What a faff though.

I know the inside of a Fabia door well enough that I'll definitely fix this myself next time, anyway. The only thing I'd still not be confident of is getting the inner door panel past the lock pin.

Yeah, it's a pain. I broke the plastic bit that holds the metal rod to the lock unit and now I have no lock pin on the driver's door, but it doesn't really bother me as it has central locking.

Thing is, at the factory, the lock unit and pin assembly was already mounted to the door ancillaries carrier with three plastic rivets and the whole lot fitted to the door as a unit. However, most people cut the plastic rivets off and remove/fit carrier and lock unit separately due to the door wiring loom making it hard to get enough clearance to take it all out as one unit.

But it turns out the lock itself is knackered! So today I walked to the garage to pick up the lock. They reckoned a locksmith in town could sort it. Walked to the locksmith, they needed parts from Skoda. Walked to the Skoda dealer, who sold me one part which was clearly broken on my lock. Walked back to the locksmith who told me there's another broken bit. Phoned the Skoda dealer who has now ordered the bit.

So on Monday I have to collect the part from the Skoda dealer, take it to the locksmith, wait while it's fixed, then take the fixed lock to the garage and hopefully, one day, have a car again.

Bloody Norah :giggle:

I think it's some sort of endurance test.

Finally! Got it fixed, only took a week, 5 trips to the garage, 4 trips to the locksmith, 3 trips to the Skoda dealer, 2 visits to scrapyards, one drive to Doncaster and back, lots of phone calls, £40 worth of parts and £70 worth of labour.

Phew! Glad it's sorted :)
