Yep, had that once... got to the no fire zone then a little ripple of pop pop followed by boom. Every interdiction so far they have opened fire just as I jump so easily escaped so far. I can well imagine a newbie hanging about to have a chat.

I do like; kind of, the new popping out of hyperspace of other ships when you're tootling to a station. Had an adder almost trade paint as it appeared near a pirate platform.. scared the bejesus out of me, proximity etc. I'd forgotten the hex sphere terminal entrance location though... flew around for a few too many minutes on that. Then remembered the thumbing a lift thumb points to entrance. :D

One Easy way at the moment is to take a SRV equipped ship out to the Ancient Guardian Ruins (100s of sites have been found - and they now appear on you Nav panel if within 1000ls) after getting a mission from Ram Tah at Felice Dock  at Meene.  You scan the obelisks at the ruins with relics in your SRV Hold and get some info on the Guardians and 1mcr towards the mission.  The max you can get 101mcr with 100mcr bonus - there is a bug/feature that if you are at a ruins with all the relics in your Ship's hold with other commanders scanning - you can get their scans as well. The good thing about the mission is that you can hand in the data at anytime (at the station you picked it up at) and redock and get the mission again.  It's quite easy to get 20mcr in couple of hours.

Additional information:  You'll pick up a bit of Exploration data as well ( remember a DSS and ADS)  and you can sell this to Fellicia Farseer at Deciat access to her engineering stuff ( FSD, Thrusters)

Just to add to this - The closest system with ruins to Meene is about 250Ly away, which is about 2hrs in my FdL and many local stars are NOT scoopable. Others are as far as 900Ly.
You need the right combination of relics when doing the scans and you need to run several such scans, with the combinations changing each scan. Get it wrong once and the whole thing resets, meaning you must leave and re-enter the instance... and the combinations change each time, too.
Finally, you need every scan from every ruins site across the galaxy if you want the maximum payout plus bonus (100mil or 200mil bonus, depending on which source you believe).

That's a LOT of work for 200milCr. How are you getting 20 in a couple of hours?

Well for a start a FDL isn't exactly the right ship for the task ;)   (I can average 1 jump a minute - your FDL must have a really poor jump range 250ly/ (2*60m) =2ly?)

In a ASP X (standard jumprange around 30ly ish - more if engineered -(my best >51ky :D) 250ly is 8 jumps  which should take around 8 minutes.  (900ly is only 30! just around the corner! ;) )

Unscoopables are hardly a problem any more as you can exclude them from your route using the star filter - take a decent fuel scoop.

They are long lists available of what combinations are required at which obelisk.  (see the Alien and other mysteries thread in Dangerous Discussions on Frontier's Forums)

You can also pop along with a few friends to a ruin, fill you ship's cargo with two of each relic and sit there while a friend drives around and scans with no relics.  You will get about 12 million from each ruin type.

I'm absolutely rubbish at combat  (although it does say Expert) mostly against NPCs but I've made most of my cash from exploring and went on the Distant Worlds expedition last year to Beagle point (65kly ) and have just come back from the Rift (11kly) and I came back from there in an afternoon. I'm currently approaching 15000 systems visited.

>Well for a start a FDL isn't exactly the right ship for the task ;)

It's what I have. I do need the money, hence doing this, else I'd have a better ship. I've put too much into getting this up to scratch to outright sell it.

>I can average 1 jump a minute - your FDL must have a really poor jump range 250ly/ (2*60m) =2ly?

Well, mostly 2hrs for 280Ly, thereabouts. 29 jumps, it took me and that was the fastest route. Filtering on scoop-only stars was almost 50 jumps!

I have just over 12Ly range, but that's only 3 jumps' worth of fuel (8t tank) and if there's no scooping (my 4A scoops up to 0.342t/s froma Class A star) then I have to schlep off to the nearest outpost or station to buy it, if there is one.

>They are long lists available of what combinations are required at which obelisk.  (see the Alien and other mysteries thread in Dangerous Discussions on Frontier's Forums)

I understood that combination changes each time you try?

The combinations are fixed -although some of them don't show up in solo , i thought an FDL was quite pricey, a hauler or Adder is a good cheap explorer, a t6 ;), a cobra or a Diamond back explorer is the next ones up. With engineering a keelback, courier are OK.

As I said the FDL is a poor choice for doing anything other than combat.

OK.... it's a half-hour to my nearest site with 30Ly jump range.

There are 15 obelisks, but even though the combinations work, only 13 actually return a payout. The other two scan in fine but no success message comes up in the left comms panel and no additional reward appears in the mission. I get the blue success advice in the right comms panel, but that's all.

All else seems fine, pretty much. Not going to bother going Open (griefers) or round each site as it'd be one heck of a schlepp and I can probably make more money faster, even with the 100mil bonus.

It's quite easy to do to get a couple of sites -no skill required and all the exploration data is good for ranking up with Farseer.

I travel enough as is, but if I need more there's plenty to get me there. I'm mostly interested in the fun gameplay side and extra cash, rather than the completionism I'd need to get the 100mil bonus. I'm very close to Deadly, but I'm just going about my business and letting that rank up as and when. Getting my FdL kitted out for combat is more important, especially right now as it's not so good in a fight any more. Still gutted about the Python...!!

So why aren't all the obelisks paying out, do you think?

I've tried in Solo and Group, but the same ones just don't update the mission reward even though I get confirmation of correct scan...

'Cause its bugged ;)

I would come and give you a hand but I'm not playing until the weekend of the 15th April.

I'm more wondering what would make a decent combat ship.

I used to kick butt in my Python, but they did a restat. NPCs got tougher and suddenly the Python isn't worth spit in a fight - Beforehand I could pack it with weaponry and blaze away, one-passing Sideys and Eagles, dropping most things my own size without a worry and even taking down Anacondas single-handedly... while nowadays even a skilled NPC Cobra is problematic.

I'm not sure how the Multicrew thing will work in reality. Unless you're flying into combat every time it would get pretty dull I would have thought.

I'm not sure I care what my commander looks like until he's up and walking around stations.

Other stuff, yeah ok, more interested in that, asteroid bases sound good.

Multicrew means your buddy is ready to deploy in a fighter in the event you are interdicted, whereupon he can harrass and distract the enemy while you either hop it or lay down additional fire and blatt the arrogant little so-and-so.

It's also useful for showing newbies around, but your crew also earn money proportionate to your ranking... which means your Mostly Harmless mate can benefit off that 24mil Cr passenger mission far more than they would in their own ship. The same applies to surface missions - They can blaze off in the SRV while you provide air support, aerial recon and navigation, distance scanning and so on.

Remember the bigger ships can carry multiple fighters and SRVs, so you can have as many buddies as you have additional seats - Have a laugh as whole group!

The character customisation thing is just a typical gaming thing. All the best games have it. It makes more sense when you see the camera facilities, but it also helps when you look to your left and your buddy actually *looks* like your buddy. It seems pretty easy to get a fairly accurate likeness, based on what the Beta had.

So does the multicrew 'pull' your crew together when something happens?

I'm just imagining 2hr of sitting around doing nothing whilst the commander moves 1000T of biowaste in safe space.

I like the game but I rarely have enough time to spend on it to get the most out of it.

No, you send an invite. Your buddy accepts it and then they 'teleport' from wherever they are in their ship to the seat in your ship, whereupon you ride together for the duration... or until they quit and teleport back to their ship... or you boot them out... or you lose internet connection...

You can also open your ship up to strangers (or put yourself out to join someone else's ship), selecting one of several activities (combat, trading, exploring, piracy, bounty hunting, etc) as the mission brief and thus the terms by which everyone on the crew must abide. Anyone p***ing about and breaking the terms of their crewmanship gets booted and they suffer a penalty of some kind. So someone that joins you and then wrecks your game by shooting up the cops gets in trouble themselves, for example.

IIRC, there are a few things you can do on board, like some engine management things and stuff. Early days, to a certain extent, but still good fun. You can even take your buddies to systems for which they do not yet have a permit, like Shinrarta Dezhra!

10.5Gb

Bleedin hell, for an update. The HD on my first PC wasn't much bigger than that.

A lot of players remarking on that... Few are aware that an "update" for Star Citizen, which is still in pre-pre-pre-pre-pre-Alpha sort of stage and barely more than a playable tech demo, is well over 50GB..... yeah.

!!!!! :D

That wouldn't fit on my first PC  HD -which was 40Mb.

going to update it and give it a go :)

Well, after a little rest, downloaded the update and so far pretty underwhelmed. The Holo-me feature is OK, naming a ship is OK, but I seem to have lost my body when I jump.  Bought a Dolphin now known as "The Funky Gibbon" but there doesn't seem to be a huge difference in stuff to do.  Not tried the Multi crew yet - it involves online co-operation. There's a load of new controls that need binding (new camera, some in Holo-me).

I'm still feeling a little bit "disappointed" at the moment as I don't think the background stories are being played very well, too much story stuff is being promoted via reddit, facebook, twitter, youtube or the Frontier forums and it all seems like a half-baked 3-2-1-like clue ( and mostly based on daft ciphers). The in game story telling tools are inadequate and I doubt that people who don't frequent the above social media sites would know what is going on.

Most of the updates are additional assets, tweaking of stats, things like that and a whole metric ferktonne of bug fixes.

You may find money is far easier to make on certain activities. Ships are cheaper, too, I believe. Anaconda used to be, what, 165mil? Now it's down to about 140mil. Missions are more extensive, especially multi-stage ones.

It's prettier.

They've tarted up the lighting and models for the stations.

Can't see much else different.

Haven't tried the cameras yet.

I still can't figure out how to get me chap promoted.

My federation reputation is at 20% and going up very slowly and my rank has been at 100% for months. Does it need to get to 100% before I get a promotion mission. That'll be bloody ages.

Pick a station to call your 'home base' for a while.

Look through the local factions offering missions and pick those that have a Federation symbol. Then do a load of missions for them and them alone. As your reputation with those local boys goes up, your Fed ranking will slowly increase. Also take note of the factions and try to avoid shooting up anyone from a Fed-aligned local faction, if possible... if they're Wanted and attacking you, then fair enough. You don't lose Fed ranking for killing criminals... although the local lot might take issue if you make a habit of it.
