Elite: Dangerous

Featured Replies

Why have I not heard of this? I've been following star citizen for a while, and also no man's sky, but how have the boy and I missed this? Is it easy enough to get into and what's the mula situation with it, monthly/annual subs cost, buying upgrades, etc?

Cheers

Lennie

It's quite hard to start with ( as I've just started again with another account CMDR Waldovenison Smeare ) but gets easier . There are two versions (elite:dangerous and Horizons*) both are played in the same galaxy and players can interact with each other. The two main difference is 1. The price and 2. you get much more in Horizons.

Price - E:D is £19.99, Horizons is £24.99 on top of that (although I have  bought E:D and Horizons for 29.98).

Horizons allows you to land and explore planets/moons with no atmosphere and the next release allows some upgrading of ships' modules. Horizons is the second season - if you buy it you get all updates until the third season starts. There are in game purchases but are restricted to ship skins  and bobbleheads :notme:  but they aren't required to play. Once you've bought the game   no more payments until the next season and even then you can continue playing the version you've bought.  Elite:dangerous is occasionally on special offer at £9.99 (on frontier's site and steam)

I've been playing 4weeks 6d 13h game time, Some people find the game a bit of grind (but then I think its how they play the game and they want to have everything as quickly as possible) . I don't find this as I don't play it that way.

  • I'm not doing that again!   The ZX spectrum version ate 2 years of my lfe, and the 16bit rerun on the Atari ST / Amiga saw off another year.   I havent got enough years left to play Elite another

I only have Dangerous and I've not bought Horizons. I picked up Dangerous in a sale for £10.

TBH I got a bit bored and haven't played for a while.

Depends on what you are after from it I suppose.  I've been playing fall out 4 for over 10 days game time and still haven't gotten around to completing the first main mission yet. I will travel, build and kill stuff, collect trophies and bobbleheads, upgrade, supply my settlers with better guns and armour, join all the factions and complete all of their missions until I have a decision to make regarding picking sides then pretty much destroy everyone and become king of the world. I take the long way around.  :p

Horizons is on special offer £19.99 for the 2.1 "Engineers"  release on Thursday 26th.

Bought a new Joystick CH Fighter Stick (as old one was old and a game pad!) - new one seems very good and haven't crashed into anything yet - it was a bit strange as I bought the Mac version from Amazon which was £10 cheaper than the Pc version (but they are identical!)

2.1 Engineers  released last night.

Finally got back form my wee jaunt to civilization.

Made just over £800k from the trip and stuck my name on a few dozen bits and pieces.

Haven't really looked into the Engineers season.

just started with engineers, off to see one! lol....

good update, fooking HARD NPC's makes it more realistic, not sure I like the new layout for equipping ships....

I don't like the new bulletin boards. Much less hassle with the previous list.

arh darn, I almost brought the updates in the steam sales... mind you I fear docking and taking off now will be mighty expensive... not to mention I've no idea where I hid my joystick.

latest update now live.

Suppose I'd better chime in here - Been playing since late Alpha, myself.

Had a bunch of ships but took a big loss just after a recent update, partly because I didn't realise they'd restatted things and further nerfed the Python, partly due to a glitch in NPCs using Engineer mods (full-auto Plasma Accelerator!!!) and partly due to being a stubborn idiot intent on punishing NPCs that I could no longer take on...

I have since had to sell a load of my other ships and am working on getting this Fer de Lance up to combat spec, although it's very expensive!!

Was after cleaning up my drive and thought oh heck forgot about this. Took a sidey out flew about, boosted to the gate, fortunatly my joy hat was still mapped to trusters so I ducked in... docked and had a brew.

Now do I delete or spring for the pass. From a quick reddit catch up, seems I'll be loosing anything of value *vulture/type 7* stuff without a engineer upgrade... which by my math, makes the season pass thing almost obligatory now unless I go star surfing.

Thoughts?

I wouldn't think you'd lose anything - That'd just alienate players who don't have the Horizons package.

Certainly things have gotten harder, but that just means you'll have to fly smarter. It's not called Elite Dangerous just because it sounds cool...!

If you're running a freighter, be aware that you're a target and be prepared to run. Before the restat I could take my Vulture out and drop an Anaconda singlehanded, often in head-to-head combat. That really shouldn't happen and really was too easy... Just a shame they killed off the lovely Python.

But all that said, the Horizons season of updates really has added several new dimensions to the game and, IMO, they're absolutely stunning!!

But Horizons is only the first and they have at least 10 years of updates planned!!

Get the full pass, if you can.

By the risk of loss, I meant drop into a rez in the vulture and leave in a datapacket for the nearest hub. As you say it was too easy, target powerplant, more pops than a pop-tart toaster taste testings day.

I was beginning to contemplate the kill missions, brushing up on my truster only fighting style... seemingly always a close call, one I was working on figuring out. If the NPC's are now jacked up, I suspect the close call will be a whizz bang of a railgun and a popped canopy. I have 35ish mil spare to experiment with loss.

Might just grab my hauler and a cobra and start over; albeit on a good seat stuffed with toasty credits.

I thought only the horizons pass was available atm.

>By the risk of loss, I meant drop into a rez in the vulture and leave in a datapacket for the nearest hub.
Not outright - The Vulture is still one HEFTY little son of a....
You have two HUGE weapons. Those will very quickly drop most things of medium size or less, plus you have teh speed and manoeuvrability to bring them to bear faster then your target can move. Eagles are still one-pass-wonders!

>If the NPC's are now jacked up, I suspect the close call will be a whizz bang of a railgun and a popped canopy.
Just pick your targets more judiciously...

>Might just grab my hauler and a cobra and start over; albeit on a good seat stuffed with toasty credits.
Nah, start up as before, but be far more careful and do not be afraid to make a tactical retreat.... You'll live longer!!

>I thought only the horizons pass was available atm.
I have the lifetime pass. Not sure if that's currently available or not, but if it is then snatch it with both hands!!

I've not been in combat for ages, made most of my money through exploring , CGs and recently the ruins.  I've not lost anything by being attacked but then I haven't been anywhere where I was likely to be (apart from ruins in open). Landing on planets does open up a lot if things and Engineers havd been madd a big easier but it can be a bit of a grind to get the best.

I'm giving it a bit of rest (for lent) after the poor show by Frontier in their story telling ability for both the ruins and the rift mystery which goes from a pixel hunt to decoding stuff for nasa to giving the answer on a plate.

I've just started playing it again after a few months off.

It looks like they've upped the reward for missions. I'm starting to ones that pay out over 100k for shifting a few cans of ****.

I've made about £2M in the last few days and might actually think about a bigger boat soon

I'm going to try to do something with the engineers next, I was trying to get my Federation rating up but that was taking a tedious amount of time.

But it's a long haul out to the station.

One Easy way at the moment is to take a SRV equipped ship out to the Ancient Guardian Ruins (100s of sites have been found - and they now appear on you Nav panel if within 1000ls) after getting a mission from Ram Tah at Felice Dock  at Meene.  You scan the obelisks at the ruins with relics in your SRV Hold and get some info on the Guardians and 1mcr towards the mission.  The max you can get 101mcr with 100mcr bonus - there is a bug/feature that if you are at a ruins with all the relics in your Ship's hold with other commanders scanning - you can get their scans as well. The good thing about the mission is that you can hand in the data at anytime (at the station you picked it up at) and redock and get the mission again.  It's quite easy to get 20mcr in couple of hours.

Additional information:  You'll pick up a bit of Exploration data as well ( remember a DSS and ADS)  and you can sell this to Fellicia Farseer at Deciat access to her engineering stuff ( FSD, Thrusters)

Never really paid attention to the storylines, myself. Stuff was happening, but mostly in places far away from me and in long reams of text that I can't read while flying and I'm not going to watch three hour-long pod/vidcasts of game Devs talking about stuff. Lovely that they're putting loads of effort in, but it just gets buried in the reams and reams of petty, unimportant guff about trade prices going up, systems in quarrantine and whatever contrived political machinations Arrissa Lavigny-Duval and Co are getting up to that has no effect on the game bar changing the 'News Headline' text.

There's still so much in the game I haven't tried yet, without having to give a damn about fictional characters I've only seen one picture of.

Might just be that you've upped your standing with a local faction, who are now offering you better wages for the work...

So I've sold my fleet of sidewinder/hauler taxi's that I'd left as markers. My type 6 got liquidated too.

Thought I'd have a wee crack at some of the mining missions as I'm but a hop or two from Jura with pristine ice and rock belts... Maybe I should of kept the 6... I'm not ready to stomach a aspx miner yet, the cobra well it's a snug ship... once I've gotten my space legs I'll refit, the aspx miner is 30+ eek!

I like the idea of a aspx and scanning/exploring, noting I can store modules now. Saves on multiple ship outlay. Not really done the travel out of the bubble thing yet... the last time I set off I didn't have a clue and came back in a data packet. 20mcr for an evening sounds like compression of a whole lot of previous generation work :) I like, will have to get the pass mind.

I was thinking of grinding my imperial rep, just so I can get a clipper, to babysit my courier.

Noticed a huge leap in interdiction's while doing some pesky transit missions. Easy enough to submit then boost away, just annoying to be caught at the station deceleration area repeatedly... big old corkscrewing descents seem to work.

>Noticed a huge leap in interdiction's while doing some pesky transit missions.

Yup.

But at least they scan you beforehand. Have had people decide my cargo isn't worth anything and slope off to leave me be quite a bit, which is nice of them...

>just annoying to be caught at the station deceleration area repeatedly... big old corkscrewing descents seem to work.

It's the prime point to catch your target as you chase them across the system. They're busy watching the decel, you're gaining on them - Wham!!

Can also work, if you're watching the Comms panel and know you're being hunted, if you intentionally speed past the station and use the gravity to brake, before coming about to enter from the other side.

Sometimes they'll spin and drop in behind you, by which time you've boosted to the station and their opening of fires upon you is met by the station's cannon... nothing survives that, ha ha!!!!!
