Well... yeah... Would you promote a new starter several levels up in your company if you knew they'd be off next week and potentially working for the competition? No, you wouldn't. You'd want someone dedicated to the cause, who's gonna stay at least long enough to do some good.

Spend a week of evenings doing missions for one specific local faction. Your Fed ranking will rise.

Also, you'll find that as you become Cordial, then Friendly, then Allied with that faction, their missions will start paying a LOT more - Your initial shipping job of 5T of Emergency Power Cells might earn you 20,00Cr... once you're allied, you'll be offered over a million for the same thing!

Ah I thought I just had to stick with any Federation faction and it would go up so I'm 'Friendly' with dozens of the buggers.

I believe it does if you try it that way, but much much slower... and possibly no higher until you go just that little bit further with it. It takes very little to get Friendly, maybe a dozen quick little missions... it takes a few more to get Allied, but the benefits do pay off!!

Well, yeah, if you want to go down that route... I don't believe those are Power-aligned ones, usually, though. Seem to be more the smaller local factions, hence relying on your charridy...

If you're at 100% there should be a promotion mission on the mission board.

Im just about to buy this - has anyone recieved the £5 voucher code message from microsoft on their xbox - use by today?  I only had one on my daughters account :(

Bought this eventually for myself last week, as my boy has had it for a while, and then discovered my Game hard drive is almost full.  Need to order another drive now I think, I have drives kicking about but I can't remember if they are fully functional or not.  Hell.

Sticking in one place did the trick. Very quickly went from 'Friendly' to 'cordial' got a mission and went form Recruit to Cadet.

Making ok money as well hovering around some boom systems.

Been test flying the Dolphin "The Funky Gibbon" seems like a nice cheap explorer - fsd range 40ish (engineered) with srv. No weapons - big engine based distributor though can boost several times on one charge - great for running away - although it doesn't seem to be needed as much as the pirates don't attack if you haven't got anything.

Now a midshipman.

I just want to visit Sol. I know there is nothing much there but it's an aim.

After that I think it'll be time to outfit a proper exploration ship and go sightseeing.

I'd recommend that you get a ship with a large jump range:-

1. It's more efficient (especially if you make small jumps)

2. If you get "bored" you can get back quite quickly

3. You can get through the "Tagged" section of space quite quickly.

I also recommend EDDiscovery and/or EDSM to track your journey.

The current thinking is that you need at least 1 AFMU (really important if you plan to use Neutron boosts), an SRV and mining laser (has been used to collect jump mats from planetary rings/ asteroid fields when a pilot has run out of enough fuel to jump out) - and of course ADS, DSS (for the extra credits) and the largest Fuel scoop you can afford (some debate on

whether an A rated scoop is worth the extra millions). These can be modded now for lighter weight or faster scanning.  I'd fit shields but there are quite a few explorers who don't.  There is also some debate on the use of heat sinks to escape from the "too close" dropping from supercruise when you fly to close to a star.  It does make it easier but I think you can get the same effect but turning most things off and then jumping.

Most ships can make 30ly jump with a SRV (with engineering)  - but the best ones are still the Anaconda (~70ly) and Asp Explorer (~60ly) and Diamondback Explorer (~55kly) but my Dolphin is 40kly and is a very cheap rebuy (300kcr). Out of my 2 Asp X's ones a 60kly jumper and the other is a A rated armed at about 40kly.(it still sucks at combat - but that just may be me!). I have a Keelback with SRV and Fighter (and crew) but I can only get a 30kly range out of that. I done most of my exploring in a non engineered Asp X (33ly) but have mostly been using the 60kly one recently - but have taken a liking to the Dolphin.

My "other" Commander has a Imperial Courier equipped with SRV and Enhanced thrusters and is fun to fly over planetary surfaces.

As exploring usually takes a long time make sure you take a ship that you are happy with before setting out on a long trip (over 2kly)  - so do a few short journeys to make you it doesn't get on nerves.

I've only got 4M credits in the back right now I'm assuming I'll need something like 15M to do it right.

My current ride is a Viper MkIV and I do actually have an engineered drive so I'm getting a jump range of about 17ly.

I'd rather have about 50ly before I went trekking.

For a Really cheap explorer the Hauler (no srv) or Adder  is a good choice.

15m sounds a bit high for something like a dolphin.

Got my sights on an Asp Explorer but I'd quite like to keep the Viper and not trade it in.

Don't forgot that Alioth have a discount on the ASP Explorer (15% I think) - only downside if you have to get a Permit (which is not too hard) - just have to become friendly with the Alioth Independents and get the Permit mission.

The link I posted to https://coriolis.edcd.io/  is quite good at determining the cost for any particular build.

(Apart from the fact that they have "gone on strike" over the May Bank Holiday weekend.)

Did anyone have a go at the Salome event over the weekend?

I was going to as I have sort of been trying to follow the Rift story (how the story has been told is one of my main problems with ED at the mo)  and have been out to the abandoned bases out beyond the Heart and Soul nebulae,  I tried to watch one of the Twitch streams but it was so boring (why people pay money to these clowns I don't know) I stopped watching.  The ED Dangerous Forum's are quite entertaining at the moment with the usually nasty guff that happens at times like this - Sometimes I think they need reminding that it's only a game.

Anyway IO set forth for the vast black expanse at the weekend (got 9% to go to get to Exploration Elite )- if anyone wants to join me let me know - probably heading out to SAG A and then depending how I feel further out or back via Colonia.

I read the book... it was reasonable, I suppose, but didn't really resonate with me either as a story set in the world of Elite, or as a story itself. I've read worse, I've read better, both from the various different Elite tie-in novel series. I intended to have a bash, but didn't make it to the PC early enough. Quite sad that anyone would try and bring EVE gameplay into a game that really isn't EVE, as well as players being so stupid/uppity and spoiling the whole damn thing...

I agree that the main stories do seem to get buried somewhat. It's a bunch of text that appears split across various sources, most of which you have to actively seek out (kinda hard, if you don't know they're there in the first place) - I've recently started seeing all these different weapons that I had no idea existed, for example, until I watched a couple of SDC's videos.

I'd like to get out and explore some of these places, perhaps, though. Any idea where is best to begin?

I never really played online multipalyer games before ( a bit of wolfenstein ET on the past)  and was surprised how nasty people can get.  The Forums, Reddit, facebook and  seem to be the places where the story unfolds and sometimes is more like an more complicated episode of "321" (where most people get "Dusty Bin" - good name for a ship?) - I think the all the story should be in game.

As for exploration - how far do you want to go? And how far have you been before? - It's a bit of a different mindset to hopping around the "Bubble" as you can get bored quite quickly.  A good first trip is out to Colonia as this can be split in bite size chunks as there are planetary bases (where you cans sell data and repair ship)  on the way  (roughly at 5kly intervals) . Then SAG A is only 5Kly away.  The only problem is this is getting a well worn route so first discoveries will be harder to find.  But has the advantage if you don't like exploration you can come home the way you came or sell your data, sell your ship, buy a cheap Sidewinder and blow it up and use the freewinder back in the bubble.  (I wouldn't do this but many have).

There are also new bases out in California Nebula which is a quite close as well and you could carry on out to the Heart and Soul nebulae (new bases there as well) and then on to the Rift bases (you can get 15m cr for scanning them ) and then out to the Zaura.

>I never really played online multipalyer games before ( a bit of wolfenstein ET on the past)  and was surprised how nasty people can get.
Oh God, yes...!!!
Mostly children, who have plenty of school holiday time to waste getting insanely good at these things, find all the exploits that make them better and so on. I remember being young-er (but not that young) and becoming relatively good on Spectrum games, but never to this sort of level.
And yet, most seem very unconcerned with the months it took people to get their kit, thinking nothing of griefing and eradicating a player over and over, because skillz, you know. Git gud and all that... everything is so disposable to them, while they're also often the ragequitters the instant you deal them the same hand.

People generally suck, so I try and avoid them. :)

>I think the all the story should be in game.
Very much so, but alas it looks to be going the other way.
Elite was always a single player thing and even today it mostly is. But they've tacked on this multiplayer aspect and while the rare things many thousands of light years away are awesomely cool, the majority of players don't even know they exist.
Not long from now, the galaxy will suddenly be ripped apart by Thargoids invading and stomping on everyone. A few players... who've been out to all the distant locations, done all the scans, put the noises through spectrometers, followed the image clues, found the secrets, analysed the Fibonacci sequences, done the Engineering and developed the super-über-tech... will be able to fight them. The rest will just wake up one morning and wonder what the hell is going on!

>As for exploration - how far do you want to go? And how far have you been before?
I'd like to start by finding some interesting things, maybe visit a few of these crashed locations and the like. Obviously I'd want to be the first to discover a planet, maybe even an Earth-like, but we'll see.
I've been as far as the Ancient Ruins and a couple of dark nebulae, in a DBX. I know I'll eventually have to get an Anaconda with super-duper-engineered FSD, though I'm working on the funds for that.

Mostly I'm still asking myself (and the game) what is out there and whether it's worth going to look. The Ruins were fun to see and drive around, and I plan on giving some of the others another go soon.
But this is the problem of having the story all over the place and giving people different parts of the puzzle. While it's a touch realistic, it also means most people don't get any of the story, so quit the game on the basis that it's shallow and empty...

You could always join an expedition - the explorers are a better bunch than the pewpew crowd - there's one setting off shortly:-

Most of my gameplay and availability is dictated by work, home life and general awake-ness, really.

Not sure I could commit to being in a specific location by any given date & time.

I had the same problem with the Distant Worlds expedition - but I made it to a few events and met some other Cmdrs along the way.
