I've been cloned!

Featured Replies

Well either that, or a dealer has taken out a Yeti and the parking camera didn't spot the trade plates.

On the day before the Briskoda Brands Hatch trackday, when my car was parked on my drive, it was also alledgedly in Grimsby.

I've never even been to Grimsby! :D

Smells a bit fishy to me!

I had this when I traded my old Altea. It was on a personal plate, and traded it some 150 miles away for a Jetta. Dealer swapped the plates over with DVLA, and I left him the original plates for the Altea to change over and bin mine, and drove away with my plate assigned and fitted to the new car.

A month later I gets a nice couple of photos (5 hours apart) through the post of my old car with my plate still on it, taken in Asda car park about an hour after I sold it, and an invitation to pay £60 (which I declined).

I declined all their further offers of payment, including the ever threatening "If you don't pay then we'll pass your details to a debt collection firm (surprisingly registered to the same address as the solicitors who were sending me the letters) who will take further action." Eventually they stopped sending letters and I stopped throwing them in the bin.

Never been cloned but I've had a speeding fine for my previous two cars after trading in. Hasn't happened with the VRS but I suppose the change of plates has done that.

I suspect it's because my reg spells the model of car exactly.

Go into a local Skoda dealer and the same car is sitting there with my reg number on it...  only if they move it on the road trade plates go on.

If I were you I'd call SUK and inform them they are no longer allowed to use the YET1 plate as legally it's yours and each use will incurr a charge :D

What a ball ache. So this could happen a few times? At least its not been done for any dodgy reasons and seems to be as suggested its a dealer on a test drive with a reg that appears to be yours

In work I had a nightmare for a while as one of our Dutch plates which travelled to and around central London a lot had the same registration as some ones private reg somewhere in England and he was getting fined multiple times a week over a good 6 or 7 months.......... I bet he was enraged when after pointing out that the registration was perfectly legal and exempt from the congestion charge and unless they amended it to expect more. But I was nice and just changed the plates on the car for all travel in the UK as it had a few.

As you've been cloned are you going to change your avater to Dolly? On a more serious note I'm assuming you've asked for the photographs and for them to help identify which dealer is involved if it is as you suspect someone on trade plates.

This happened to my dad though it all went a bit more sour as he was stopped by armed police. Turns out someone had cloned his car and used in all over London without paying the congestion charge then a few days later it was used in an armed robbery of a jewelers (hence the armed response). Not sure my dad at 62 would be that impressed to be looking down the barrel of a variety of guns,  though knowing him he would have taken it all in his stride. He was told that as it had been used in a robbery it was likely that whoever had cloned it would have then torched the car so it was unlikely that the congestion charges etc would continue. They put a marker on the car and asked him to leave a specific mark on his plate so he could be identified if the anpr flashed it again.

Exactly.

Waiting for photo evidence.

Photo evidence is the way forward mate.

Is there a website you can view it on?

My dad got a speeding ticket last year relating to his motorbike (which was in the garage).

Logged onto the website and found the picture. Some old lady driving a little red Kia picanto.

Didnt take much explaining over the phone as its clearly not a bmw r1200gs adventure in the pic lol.

The camera picked up one letter wrong

Fingers crossed photo evidence sorts it out.

This could be a laugh. How many Skoda dealers are there in Grimsby?

Phone them up and ask what plate they have on their demo car.

Was it the same colour as yours?

Westgate Skoda is the dealer in Grimsby apparently, according to Google.

In all seriousness, I'm not sure oof the legality of someone using a 'show' vehicle registration plate on the road that is actually a copy of a real one.

They might have to cover them up when on the road.

The Stag was supposedly cloned however a dopey mot tester used the engine number instead of vin number. Get photos of the Yeti in question, including details such as colour and see if it's FL, then send a photo of your v5 which will show them it is not your car that is cloned and then phone the dealer demanding an explanation and escalate to SUK to insure this doesn't happen again.

Easily sorted

Just say it couldn't have been you, as you were speed-testing the Nissan GTR on the M4 at the time

I thank you  :)

The front trade plate is slung on the dashboard, the rear trade plate is hung on the rear wiper.

This leaves the showroom plates YET 1 on full display, front and rear.

Surprise surprise... it was indeed a Yeti with a dealer YETI plate on, and trade plates on the dash.

Good news you've found the guilty dealer though I wonder how long it will be before you get the first NIP for someone else speeding.

Thinking about it, I'm surprised you haven't heard from the DVLA about your improperly spaced registration numbers as well!

Don't ever go to Westgate skoda, I phoned them up to see a car, drove 65 mles to see it, when I got there there was no fuel in it,  Maxi dot said 10 miles, asked why and the reply was

" we won't be going very far , down the road and back, "  I got the impression they were not interested

Never again, NEVER

How would they know his is incorrectly spaced?

Theyve only seen a pic of the showroom car? ;)
