I did the subtraction. 5 - 20% = 4

Edit: The thread is about the 5 cylinder, so I used that as my base line for the maths.

But in comparison terms you need to look at it from the other way round

  • Well I've finally collected my RS3.   So I thought I would share my initial thoughts and photos:-           Two RSs together:-   The car is really easy to drive as I was so nervous d

  • Not sure an M2 is ideal for the commute.  Or loading the family in. Also the 1 series can't have adaptive cruise, so not sure about the 2. Wanted something a bit more sensible as I have a quick week

  • Nah, leave him be, the 7R forums will eat him alive, at least here we know where he is and it beats care in the community

I was talking about the 100% Audi so everything else is in proportion to that. Although that noise is 200% fab :) (compared to an imaginary expectation of 100% sound :D )

Yes, the 4 cylinder might sound 20% worse than the 5 cylinder.

But then i a Mutt & Jeff so no idea really.  Some is synthetic anyway and not exactly stealth.

I've seen a few videos of the new RS3 (a colleague has a TT RS and keeps forcing me to watch the RS3 vids :D ) and it has one of 'the' great sound tracks. The exhaust note is gorgeous. Imho the soundtrack is a factor of 'a lot' better than the A45's and even that doesn't sound too shabby. I could live with a RS3  or a TT RS quite easily (if I had the money). I heard a rumour that the engine might go into an R8 (which I hope isn't true)

I think really most people at the side of a road seeing & hearing some car going under 60 mph but making lots of noise think what does that plonker think they are.

Those driving in other cars are not even bothered listening to it, so mostly its just the driver getting the thrill.

Well all the petrol heads I know appreciate a great sounding car. If it's been driven at 60 in a 30 zone, then I think "Plonker". I've always wound my window down when I come alongside something interesting, as do most car enthusiast that I have met. The complex harmonics of the Audi are something special really and the 2 main notes are a rare thing to hear. Some V10s have the same basic harmony :) I can usually quite easily tell a cars cylinder count and configuration by ear, as I suspect many peeps on Brisky can too (possibly not including a straight 8 :D )

I have been a petrol head all my life and had some great sounding engines.

But drawing unnecessary attention to yourself with noise that carries while getting a shift on is a bit of a waste of time, but each to their own.

Guess some do some don't. I never read a single journos review on any of my last 3 cars

They usually have an agenda and also mainly review based on track comments and I don't track or drift my car

The latest Teslas are mighty quick, but I couldn't live with the lack of drama in the noise department. I see the sound of a great engine/exhaust as sharing love and joy with the great unwashed. A Corsa with an exhaust pipe the size of a wheelie bin does not qualify, but the sound of a flat 12 having a bit of go (even at modest speed) is a joy to hear. Audi RS3 gets an automatic licence to entertain me aurally and Ford ST with spoil-pipe sized exhaust does not. It's not my opinion, it's the law.

For me a subtle, quiet Q-car is a nicer way to get around than a more obvious vehicle.

I really don't want to be noticed, by plod or Joe public!

I have a debadged car on a stock exhaust, but the car makes a complex and exciting sound in moderation. Perfect. For me one of the important words to a good cars soundtrack is that word, complexity. Not just some engineered hoot or a flatulent parp, but a multi layered sound that changes timbre and harmonics as the revs rise. A decent dynamic range and large repertoire of sounds makes for a great noise usually. It doesn't have to be ridiculously loud or spitting flames to enjoy it.

I should add FurbyTom has the performance exhaust version of my car and if he was to pass me in the street I would certainly smile. glorious noise :)

That sounds wonderful :) I wouldn't mind one with a slightly more subtle front end :) It does sound like it suffers from the same issue as the A45 though; mega hard ride :(

Sounds amazing!

Think all the ones I've see on youtube video reviews, have been fitted with Dynamic Package- not seen one yet shown as "Standard Exhaust"

Audi using it's best features, to maximise sales effect at press launch, I would guess.

Interesting comparison :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTXLNLc4RXs

There are a few apparently. In car noise is what counts for me

So the £1500 Dynamic package worth having then, for the sound and improved ride.

What does the Standard Spec car, sound like and ride like?.

I had the full Drive Select and Sports Diff on my A4. The sports diff was definitely worth it for £500 (probably not available on the RS3 I guess? as it isn't full time 4x4). The steering bit of the system was pants, as it just made the steering heavier, didn't do anything for the driving experience. The suspension bit was OK, but like most Audis, the ridewas  poor, just in this case, firm and poor, or slightly less, firm and poor. Funny thing is the first time you use it you think, hey this is great, I can set my car up the way I want it, but after a bit, it seemed to be a bit Jack of all trades, but master of none. My BMW system is slightly better (mainly because the ride is so much better to start with), but I could live with the suspension permanently in Firm I reckon, now I've got used to it.   I realise that it might be different in the RS3, but a friend with the mkII TT RS has adjustable suspension and on the 19" wheels the ride is awful.

Yea the adjustable thing on any car I've tried has been a waste to be honest

Obviously I have only driven a limited number of cars with adjustable doo-dahs, but they are from a few different manufacturers and this, my limited impression, is on adjustable electronics (not mechanical things like steering reach etc) this:

Steering: utterly pointless. Adds nothing, just changes the level of workout your arms get. Fiat do a super light 'parking' thing that I know one female friend likes

Suspension: Underdamped or overdamped, it never seems to hit a sweet spot for me. I guess until the spring rates can be changed to match the dampers this might always be the case. My current car feels like it was set up for the firmer of the 2 settings and the lighter one thrown in for good measure. Speed bumps are a disappointment in the 'comfort t' setting as the car poggos up and down even at low speed. This has been true of the speed bumps near my house in my last 3 cars (Audi A4, Merc C class and BMW !er) and also any hire or loan cars that have adjustable suspension - perhaps a 911 wouldn't have this problem :)

Throttle/accelerator: This is not so bad. aggressive throttle for playing silly blighters and a soft throttle for pootling around with your mum n the car and using less fuel

Auto-Gearbox:  For me this is the most successful of the adjustability stuff. Smooth changes for comfort and fast changes for sport. But it goes further. In it's most eco mode, the gearbox and throttle on my car talk to each other. Then the cars satnav can predict when changing up and down is appropriate to maximise mpg and the car will even drop a gear approaching hills, sharp bends, roundabout etc or change up early if approaching a decent. It's subtle stuff, but it is there. Also the car can disengage the transmission to 'coast' in this mode too.

I can't see any of this stuff going away, but I'm hoping they get the hang of it and finesse all the compromises they seem to bring. It doesn't matter how much the haters moan about it too, I reckon it's coming to everyone eventually

Any more info on build weeks and delivery dates. Interested on how this is varying with spec, colour choice, etc, etc.

Currently looking at Week 43 build date here... anyone else got an update?

Thanks in advance.

I should also have added that another chap at work waiting on his new A5, has had his build week moved out.

Reason given was supply chain issues on a component for the Quattro system.

Have been offered a decent trade in price on my A8, so having a test drive in about two weeks.

For a red one with a few options they are looking at 8 to 12 weeks for build and delivery.  Which seems pretty good.

Week numbers are nice, but no idea when that is or how it compares.  8 - 12 weeks for delivery I can get my head around easily.

I'm not ordering a £45k car without driving it first as on UK roads it might be a bit firm and typically VAG in it's lack of steering feel.
