Creaking Headlining

Featured Replies

Hi All

I have just brought a skoda superb 2014 170 DSG L&K Est which has a full length sunroof. When I did the test drive there were no rattles or creaking. But when I drove it home upon purchase, there is now a lot of creaking and squeaking coming from the headlining right near the sun glasses case in the centre overhead console.

I know its the headlining because if I open the blind and simply push the headlining up and down around the rim of the opening it emits the said creaking near the sun glasses case. I have tried wedging it down in place which quietens but does not cure it and looks crap with bits of cloth and card hanging out. As this is a £34k car it should work right, but it makes one hell of a creaking noise loud enough to be heard above the radio by a deaf man.

Could someone tell me if this would be covered by the warranty as the car only has 4k on the clock and is just 5 months old?

Also, what could it be, it appears the headlining is bouncing when going over bumps etc and is rubbing against something near the sunglasses case right near the rim of the plastic case. If I push on the left corner of the case it stops.

If skoda don't fix it, how easy is it to remove the certre console in the roof to see if I could pack it out with something?

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Make the dealer solve the problem.

On a new Superb under warranty I wouldn't even consider removing anything like that.  Take it back but I'd suggest maybe drive it around for another bit and stick some more mileage on it, just in case you find anymore rattles and squeaks as it can take a few miles for them to show up,  Nice spec car though - enjoy!

I've got a similar situation with mine, which is a 2014 ex-demonstrator. I was going to take it to a dealer, but I started noticing that the interior trim is a bit creaky in general, and it wasn't just the headlining. It's noticeable because I drive to work via country roads which tend to be bumpy, and the Superb has a bit of a fidgety ride (IMHO). I have come to think that fidgety ride and a few trim rattles are one of the negative aspects of this, which is partly based on other Skoda owners I know who say they have trim rattles. I would be very interested to hear if this is something that can be sorted out, so let us know how you get on.

Open the sunroof one click and close it again. That silences the creaking for at least a day or two. Using gummi pflege on the seals will also help (This quietens door creaks in most cars too). Then get the dealer to regrease the runners for the sunroof under warranty. My sunroof has been completely creak free since this was done 2 months ago.

There are a few other noises that you can get rid of easily too:

1. Door rattles - get spray wax/grease and spray into the door latching mechanism - spray upwards into the hinge of the plate that holds the door shut - takes less than 5 mins to do all the doors.

2. Rattling from glove compartment - this is usually the vent near the door. Open door, pull cover at side of dashboard that the door closes against off. Push vent out from behind - it won't come completely out as the wires for the light in the vent dial hold it - then put thin foam or plastic safe grease around the edge of the hole for the vent in the dashboard - takes about a minute.

The other noise I've noticed that appears intermittently (And isn't particularly intrusive) is from the surround of the gear lever, often pushing down on the front edge of it will silence this completely for a few days, so for a second's work every couple of days it's not worth pursuing further for me. Also leaving the ash tray cover a mm open can silence this.

The most annoying noise that I can't resolve is from the gear stick though. It's a plasticky click on changing gears that's almost certainly movement in the slider that allows the gear stick to be pushed down to select reverse. If you hold the gear stick at the bottom of the knob while changing gear it disappears, so the problem is certainly within the gear stick. A similar noise can be made by twisting the gear knob. The only fix I've seen for this on the forum here is complete replacement of the gear lever. This noise is the only one that unquestionably makes the car feel less than high end though.

Have now had it fixed at dealers, they had it  for 2 days and guy said he took out the sunglasses case and centre overhead console and stuffed foam in the headlining to stop it bouncing up and down. It has so far appeared to work but wont count my chickens just yet.

I find the skoda a lot more creaky than my mondeo, maybe go round with the pledge

Well I though it was fixed by the work the dealer did but its not, been back 4 times now and its still creaking. Issue seems to be the plastics in the headlining which tick/creak when the car goes over uneven roads. Dealer has had headlining out, replaced the sunglasses holder but still the same. I have now cut a length of pipe insulation foam and wedged it in between the headlining and the sunroof frame to stop the lining bouncing up and down or flexing. I have put strips of cardboard in the gap between the plastics in the headlining and this has virtually fixed the problem so its definitely in the plastics. I cannot believe that I have to do this is a £35k car. I could have brought a secondhand Bentley for that. I also have a problem in the parking sensors ghost when its been raining making a noise like a police car. Dealer has replaced one sensor so hopefully this will fix it. I also have another problem with the wing mirrors not folding in when you hold the button on the key. Does it for weeks and then suddenly starts working again. There is a TPI from Skoda on that one they say its to do with the electric windows that have stop setting which need to be reset. I have tried that as has dealer but it does not work. I am beginning to think i have brought a pile of poo and regretting ever sticking with the skoda brand again.

Wing mirrors not folding can be reset with all the windows being manually sent down (not using the double push auto down) and then the same to bring them back up
