It got a very positive review on TG last night.  Ok, it was from the useless one who usually does little more than advertise for Footlocker and JD Sports, in the studio but nevertheless I'm pleased he gave it an honest review and recommendation and didn't just passed off as 'a good first attempt, not as good as the established hot hatches'.

I hope Hyundai/Kia stick with the performance line and don't give it up like Mazda did with their MPS sub brand; the next incarnation could be pretty special based on the i30N

If I didn't need a bigger car I'd have one on my shopping list right now.

Didnt really understand the comparison with the GTI though.

Seems theres more R’s than GTI’s about now? So still one step behind..

  • You'd have to be a bit daft to think there won't be. Ford has (unlike other car makers) realised that loads of people remap and found a way to influence what people do to their cars. At least by off

  • This is my one, love the little beast.

  • Makes you wonder why so few makers do have an approved remap available. You'd think it would be better for VAG to be involved in a safe remap for it's products that just leave the door open to a mult

I think it was because the GTi is perceived as the best allrounder/the daddy/the yardstick of hot hatches?

Yeah plenty of R's around due to ludicrously cheap lease deals about 2-3 years ago.  At one point they were much much cheaper than the GTi and even the GTD.   Good news for people scouring AutoTrader for one, there's loads of them. Likkely to be the ones that have finished their lease term and are now back in the dealer network.

Which Hyundai i30 N did they have the £25,000 250ps or the £28,000 275ps?

Once they have AWD and turn up the wick then comparison with the Golf R will be in order.

The 275. Not sure if the GTI had the performance pack but I doubt it judging by how quickly the i30 opened a gap, once it got clear.

Hyundai have got the styling bang on IMO.  The Golf GTI is a little to conservative, understated but bordering on not different enough from the rest of the Golf line up.   The Type R is my guilty pleasure, I think it looks the dogs but it also looks like a regular Civic was covered in Araldite and ram raided halfords.  I like it but I wouldn't have one.

The i30N is Goldilocks, just right.  You can see it's no regular i30 and they've done just enough to make it appear a bit exciting too.  Best thing for me is the Performance Blue paint job.   I think it's now my fave hot hatch colour, previously Liquid Yellow on the Megane.

I need to drive one.

All the pops and crackles you can get from a Focus RS mk3 and some, at circa  £8k less outlay, better reliability and probably more "Natural" driving fun .

Some bargain 275 bhp used cars around at Hyundai dealerships - well worth a punt in my opinion.

Really enjoyed my test drive recently more so that my test drive in the Honda Type R FK8 around my local country quick and challenging roads.

What is that noise from the i30N?

At first I thought it was axle tramp in the first few frames, as it pulls away but it can be heard from the interior footage too.  I also thought it was at each gear change but you can hear it at other times too.

Finally, a sportier car that doesn't have to resemble an "appliance" after viewing pages and pages of them. and yet out of my league :/

Porsche Cayman 981 used at less money could do it for you I'm sure.

Thats more like it. Certainly the more thoroughbred purposeful sports car closer to the pulse.

I have to say I've always struggled with impresion of Porsche ownership though, and still pretty rich for me anyway lol.
I think I'd prefer to have a Lotus - if I could fit in one lol. Currently going the budget route with a low mileage MGF that was donated foc to me lol.

I tend to get impressions of giant sized sausage eating germans that doesn't really help.
But clearly they have a strong following on the road and track and strong race pedigree which doesn't come from naught. Maybe one day !

I used to have misty eyes about "hot hatches", of the likes of 205 Gti, golf mk1, Renault 5 Gt Turbo. But nowadays I just can't look at the cars mentioned in the recent posts, desite well beyond in technical terms to look at doesn't really inspire much. Maybe exception for the Civic which at least, is somewhat more undividual and unique looking.

It sure sounds better than my diesel wagon! Sounds better than my cupra too. Power is for vanity, exhaust pops for sanity!

You getting one Keith? I'd still have my 320PS Leon over the civic as I like stealth, and you don't want it to stand out too much, but let's be honest who is going to want to pinch a Hyundai? Perfect!

Octy Vrs wagon with a milltek and a shark remap. That's all you need.
