Bass

Featured Replies

Anyone else with the standard VRS sound system think there is a lack of bass, I've tuned the system as much as I can.

Could it be the quality of the mp3 files?

I have the canton and even with this find I have to turn bass and the canton subwoofer up to hear it to any degree but I can get it to work well with a high quality input. Running through Bluetooth from a phone I find a little lacking, so possibly low quality MP3. How do cd's sound?

It could be she mp3 quality. Try a different source - CD or iPod.

But the standard system is poor. Its the poorest standard speaker set up i've had in any car.

I think Skoda have deliberatly installed rubbish speakers to tempt / force you into upgrading to Canton. And most probably to place it under the equivalent VW system.

The MK2 had a pretty decent standard set up though?

Its isn't the fault of the speakers. Its a problem with the firmware i think as i have some tracks encoded with a very heavy bass and then the speakers are fine.

The SD card is the worst place to play music from though. Use the USB or CD for better quality and check your MP3's are encoded to at least 192khz.

But surely it uses the same DAC for music files on the sd as the USB, no?

If you're playing lossless flac files (or to a lesser extent high bitrate mp3s) off the sd card it should be fine.

The standard systems amplifier employs some kind of active sound supression/levelling...my thoughts are that its done to prevent blown woofers and reduce complaints from people about door trim rattles as warranty claims.

The standard system with a good quality source with the bass jacked up an unnatural amount actually does sound quite good...it just doesnt go v loud. You'll notice if you get it outputting about as loud as it will go on a bassy track, then the bass cuts to just mid-bass/trebble that the stereo suddenly gets much louder

.almost deafening until the bass cuts back in again. Extremely noticeable with electronic music.

I find turning the bass levels down allow you to play music slightly louder (as there is less bass) but then it sounds rubbish and tinny at low volumes.

I now just live with my bass and mids set high and just live with the lack of volume...probably not such a bad thing for my ears in fairness haha

More cushion for the pushing? Haha!

On a serious note, ive only experienced the system in the demo are i had and found it to be entirely adequate. It was as good, if not better, than the system in my current Passat.

The Canton does improve with use, has to bed in or so I'm told.

Yes some people say you need to "run in" speakers to get the best out of them

I have the standard system with Columbus head unit & I am more than satisfied with sound quality with many types of music.

Its a least on par, if not better than with the Sony branded (visteon) system from my previous Mondeos.

As far as I can tell for the brochure (although I could be wrong) is the standard system, Amundsen & Columbus all use the same speakers unless you choose the Canton upgrade.

Therefore, I would tend to agree with 999rigger that its likely to be the amplifier in the basic headunit (or digital processing etc) which causes the problems people experience?

That would be my thinking too. I have both FLAC and high bitrate MP3 and WMA on my SD card and they all sound great.

I put an SD card in the Amundsen on the demo motor I had (no Canton) and it sounded poor compared to my 2003 A6 Avant which had an active sub in the boot (not Bose though).

I don't have any issues with bass whatsoever, but that might be attributed to the fact that I have never used my Canton subwoofer and had it replaced with a 1000w amplified sub in the spare wheel space after having read the reviews on Canton before I ordered the car ;).

Seeing the difference in size & materials used between the two though, I can imagine the Canton one not having enough oomph. I too can vouch however that the system does improve with age (and use, of course) and you will have to play a bit with the settings to see what works for you. Also, the type of music you play will differ greatly, I have songs that completely rumble the car and go straight up your spine (and right through your vital organs) but switching to a random next song in the playlist can give me a totally flat sound devoid of any depth, requiring me to re-tune the settings for that song It's usually easier to just switch songs again and to make a mental note to delete that particular song from my playlist, I didn't buy that subwoofer for nothing).

Any chance you could post details of the amp and sub you had fitted? I have Canton and the sound quality is generally quite a good balanced sound, but somewhat lacking in powerful power when you turn the volume up.

It was custom-built (so no details on the actual woofer, to begin with) and the amp is tucked away below, so that will be difficult.

However, the Octavia is one of the most leased cars (here in the Netherlands at least) so the 'audio guy' (the company that my Skoda dealer works with) had loads of experience with them.

After listening to my choice of music and the system in my previous car (BMW Harman Kardon) he knew exactly what it was that I needed.

I suggest you have a similar guy on your end of the puddle listen to it and give you some sound (haha) advice.

CANTON is a let down. I have it. I have encoded all my MP3 to 320 kbps and loaded the same files onto my phone lossless. I can not tell the difference with this system. It is odd how CANTON deals better with certain types of bass frequency. I have played this...

the system really struggles with. The bass gets woolly and the speakers start to lose control. Yet I can play this.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sP22gQC2qSs and it sounds brilliant even at 192 kpbs. I find anything with punching bass really loses out, rock music with dense sound suffers the most, yet play summat like Gregory Porter..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNwfUanmihY It copes well. So if you are into Jazz it's great, but throw Bad Company's 'Can't Get Enough of Your love' at it and it all gets rather messy. I like bass in music but I think CANTON handles soft but rich bass well, yet it flounders badly with hard defined low end. So Hip Hop comes off the worst.

Sounds as though there is definitely something lacking with the O3 in general with regards to accoustics Canton or not.

The lightweight doors and rather hollow door cards probably dont help matters.

I also wonder whether the VBF affects the Canton more so than without it?

Well, the woofer is quite cheap. So it is really no surprise that the bass aint all that.

Anyone know the real specs of the amp?

If anyone can find a decent way of removing it without leaving a mess, I'm not using it anyway so I'm willing to give it a looker.

I can't really convey the sound of my new woofer to you guys, but lets just say you can see in in action on my dash cam movies... because it rattles the cam mount :P.

If your music is from Bluetooth I've found the sound is much better if you go to your sound settings in the car and set it to normal (rather than loud) and crank up the volume on your phone.

If you use Bluetooth, yes. If its over Usb or what the the Apple-thingie is called, no it shouldn make any difference.

This is something I'm curious about. Some have modified their audio files and played them from an SD card to get over the software limitations on audio quality, but I'd love to know if iPhones built in equalizer settings make a difference.

I guess I'll find out soon enough. Our car will be delivered if a couple of weeks.
