Android all the way for me

Currently on HTC and previously had a Samsung Galaxy SII for several years.

Have an iPad Air in the family, but find lack of memory / storage and IOS a little frustrating. Great screen though.

I did look closely at the iPhone 5 when I got my current HTC and was very impressed with the camera - hugely better than the ultra-pixel camera on my M8.

I currently have had iPhones since they started then when the Galaxy S4 came out I thought I'd try it had it for around 4 months and hated it all except the larger screen size, so I sold it and bought an iPhone 5s.

I've always had an iPhone and would have nothing else phone wise. I also have a galaxy tab4 and find it better for downloading what I want etc over my iPad but I originally bought into the whole apple ecosystem ie Apple tv, Apple Mac, iPad etc. I have a samsung TV which is great and works flawlessly with my tab 4 for streaming, as it also does with my Apple TV.

Stick with what you know in my opinion.

I think whatever you choose you have to be happy with the whole ecosystem that comes with it. If you'ver already committed to one or the otehr then there can be a fair bit of inertia to move to another. Something I'm sure these companies count on.

Personally

Not an iPhone fan - too restrictive to configure , specially for an IT bod that  started out having to use DOS prompts.

Dont like Samsung touchwiz, or any phone that will not allow you to set it up the way you want it, not the way they do,( where is freedom of choice )

All of the stuff you don't want or will not use on any phone, should be fully removable and the storage be utilised for your useful apps .

My phone came with base android & a few google apps, which i can tailor to suit my needs.

In the end it is down to which you prefer to use, I love my galaxy TAB4 (-unlike swmbo who has done nothing but swear at her ipad since last iOS upgrade or should that be retro grade), the Motorola Android phone, & Macbook laptop.

Good luck on our choice.

Android for me.

Had Android phones since they first came out (T-Mobile G1).

I just cannot bring myself to like iPhones. I like their design and that's as far as it goes for me. I dislike iOS and iTunes!

I have a Sony Xperia Z. I have it rooted with a custom kernel so I can have ad blocking, rSAP and generally greater control over the phone. I have it underclocked and undervolted which greatly extends battery life.

Phil

iphone every day.

The End

iPhone = overpriced underspecced and too restrictive for those that want to be abel to 'control' thier own phone themselves.  However they do work and are good for technophobes

Android = easy to use, expandable, hackable and unrestrictive.  However not always as easy to use as and iPhone and potentially more prone to problems.  Also many come with unnecessary user interfaces.

Hence I'd favour vanilla Android.

I agree that iphone is over priced.

I have a Galaxy S3 which is slow, factory reset a couple of times but still ends up slow. Thinking about the root option next.

Ive heard people describe android as hard to use before but never really understood and I know exactly the point about not being able to store anything on apple devices.

Thanks for the replies guys, Ill see what its like when its rooted.

Android.

Was given the Iphone and Samsung in the shop to try out for 20 minutes - ended up handing the Iphone back after 10 as I just couldn't get on with it.

Looking at an upgrade to the S4 I have at the moment but not sure about the S6 - think the S5 (with the waterproof rating, changeable battery and easily expandable memory) might be the one or might even keep the S4 for a while and cut the contract cost.

As for touchwiz - not 100% keen on it but as with all android phones it is easy to get a launcher to replace it.

Android all the way for me.

Both my wife and daughter have Apple products and they love them - but the are techno stupid.  But if you want something that works out of the box, have no desire to personalise and are happy with limited memory options, they are great.

But what ****es me off most about Iphones is the insistence on using non standard chargers / connections.  My wife has an Iphone 5s and an Ipad 2 - and needs to different charges and can no longer use the phone dock.

My daughter has an Iphone 4s and an Ipad3 - and needs two different chargers.

Me, I have an HTC phone (with a 64gb memory card for music and photos) and an Acer tablet and both charge from the same cable :)

Apple have got it right with the small connector called lightening, far more robust than the micro usb on my s3.

I'm with you there - we have three Android tablets, all of which use the same charger, and two phones again both of which use the same charger, and in bgoth cases the connectors are industry standard and standard voltages etc...

That's my dilemma birthday on monday andwifewants to treat me to a new phone :) , I currently have iPhone 3GS 32gb and love it but it's falling apart , so I'm off to phone shop in the morning to look at iPhone 4s and 5s and work out which is best for me ? , is it better to purchase and go sim only or go contract for 24 months ? Which will give me a free phone or possibly it works out te same in the end

I use Android at the moment and wouldn't consider an IOS device unless they had a huge u-turn in their products which is not going to happen any time soon, I prefer being able to choose the phone I want with the behaviour I want.

I'm quite fancying a Sailfish OS device at the moment though as I thought the original Maemo operating system was far ahead of its time and Sailfish seems to continue that line of thinking.

John

tried ios on a ipad no thanks

always had android and more specifically nexus devices ever since the nexus one

no android bloat

not manufacturers overlay (HTC SENSE SAMSUNG TOUCHWIZ)

updates straight from google so latest OS before any device

A lot of my die hard iPhone loving friends are moving away to Android and windows mobile.

More customisation and device choice seem to be the reason.

Even my most apple loyal relative (their house has 3 Mac books, 2 ipad, and ipad mini, 3 iPhone and an ipod touch) after suffering yet another dead Mac book air, is questioning what paying nearly £1500 has actually brought them over a windows £600 machine. They're also very keen on getting a Samsung S6 or Nexus 6 when their contract is up in a few weeks. I had to double check their Facebook status several times!

I have an iPhone 6 Plus and love it. For me the one plus the Android phones had were screen size but that's gone now and there's also no problem in our house with chargers as I have the 6 Plus, wife has a iPhone 6, kids both have iPod touches, we have two iPad minis and an iPad air, all have the same cable.

I've had Android phones but have never managed to keep one for more than a few weeks as I much prefer iOS, the quality of the apps (across the full Eco system) and the apple Eco system itself. Don't get me wrong the Flagship Samsungs I've had have been great phones and the HTC M8 was excellent but just weren't for me overall. YMMV.

It would also appear that the android manufactures are going more apple in there design rather than the other way around (S6, unibody so no removable battery & no SD card). Also the high "specs" of the android phones are required to compensate for the off the shelf components used opposed to the specifically designed parts used by apple. The CEO of Qualcomm admitted the A7 was at least 3 years ahead of any 64 bit chips designs they have and theres now the 2G A8 chip. It's why the A7 in the 5S with 1.2Ghz dual core processor & 1GB of ram out performed 2.4Ghz quad core processors & 2+ GB ram in android flagships. So I would not base any decisions on what specs are on paper if possible I'd recommend getting your hands on one of each, maybe from a friend or family and see what you think as they'll all be great phones it's just finding what suits you.

Apple = toy. we have some in the corporate environment and their TCO is double the other devices android/windows we have it is criminal that we have some idiots who insist we buy them.

That said if that is what you want then it is a personal choice.

What do people mean by customisable when they talk about android? I have heard a lot of people say that.

If you dont like the launcher, here are plenty of others.  Different ROM's, and apps to control almost every aspect of the device.

Personally, the iPhone is too heavy on the battery, small and hasn't got the compatibility for my needs. I'm using in xperia m2 at the minute, there's a few limitations, but as a whole, it's a good workhorse.

I'm currently running a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and an iPhone 6 plus. I have had Samsung's for a few years and they have been reliable. I got the iPhone because I fancied trying it out as it looked good.

The iPhone is good for car integration, iTunes integration and the premium feel but its not enough for me to ditch the note...yet.

On the car integration, all new VAG head units support android integration & screen mirroring. So you could mirror maps onto your non satnav unit.

I believe most other marque's also now offer this for Android as well as Apple
