Possible Unmarked police vrs estate? m5 Devon

Featured Replies

Was plodding in the rain up the m5 near cullompton , East Devon and noticed a white vrs estate with black grille come up behind me and go past in outside lane was about to give friendly thumbs up when he passed but the driver didn't look over so I didn't bother - but as he went past I noticed the rear number plate was kind of 'boxed' off by about an inch or so I didn't look for other signs prior to him passing so didn't note the other possible tell tale signs of cop car. The reg was something like WD63 xxx - would they have flashing lights behind the number plate or is this some kind of mod.

I have seen white vrs near Plymouth with blues going so know Devon and Cornwall police run at least one.

GlosPol have at least two, but both are driver training at the moment, both black Mk3 Hatches i believe.

Northamptonshire Police have marked and unmarked mk3 hatches as well :)

I think the one near Plymouth was driver training - seen them have two unmarked cars zipping about. Was just the funny number plate arrangement that made me question it.

Northamptonshire Police have been great supporters of the Octavias vRS's since the first introduction of the estate version however, you've gotta appreciate isn't not so much a cost saving thing as to fully kit out a Motorway Patrol car nowdays costs just over £55k.

D&C police and uk wide drugs teams use them all the time.

Hampshire have a White mk3 vRS Estate as well I believe

Found this picture of an umarked BMW - was interested in the number plate as it is also boxed out - this is what this vRS had but on the boot so pretty sure it was unmarked.

Are you pretending to be the police again?

When I had a black mk2 hatch, Hampshire had some black mk2 Hatches.  Now I have a White mk3 Estate they have white mk3 estates.  I think they are copying me!!

Surrey Police have NO Skodas on their fleet, as my wife pointed out to their service centre manager just before she closed their parts account even though he'd spent freely on that account.  Some parts were interchangable with Volvos he said, the account remained closed. !!!

I know that there is a plain Police BMW around Exeter but not seen the VRS.

Next time you do the Exeter - Cullumpton run, can you tell me if you get any DAB signal problems? I barley get any reception on that bit of the M5.

Thanks

Could be one of them halfords parking sensor kits? If the owner didn't spec it from factory?

Was on the rear - and vRS has sensors so pretty sure it was the Babylon.

Signal appears abit better since the 0390 Columbus software upload but I noted that radio 2 'jumped' abit - like a record jumping, just east of Exeter on the M5 - it may have been switching to FM I guess but I didn't note it, as it was chucking it down yesterday.

If anyone needs the 0390 firmware and is brave enough to do it themselves I may be able to help :)

In the midlands region the Mk3 vRS are used as police dog cars (in the estate version of course), in both the marked and unmarked options

Unmarked plod cars on the A1 in North Yorkshire are  Dark Grey Beemers

How to spot an unmarked police car?

No dealer stickers in rear window.

No dealer stamp on number plates.

Always have Goodyear tyres fitted.

Usually dark colours.

Usually high performance, but low spec wheels.

Usually sit low at the back, because of all the "gear" in the boot.

Usually have two burly blokes in.

Usually have lots of car park dings in doors from careless drivers.

Usually.........

If on steel wheels no hub caps

If on steel wheels no hub caps

Sounds like mine in the winter - that explains why everyone gets out of the way on the motorway :)

Up near Scotch Corner it's an Audi A4 estate in grey, and a Volvo V50 estate also in grey.

Hampshire still has a black hatch vRS, seen it twice, twice driven trying to provoke another driver (not me!!).

Will see if I can spit many over the next few days - driving Devon to Middlesbrough tomorrow, then over to Carlisle on Thursday and up to fort Augustus but via A9 on Friday - with full car load so will be going steady anyway.
