What did you do to your bike today?

Featured Replies

Must admit I have started getting lazy and leaving the cover off mine now it is in the shed.  It still gets dusty in there so should be covered up but I have not noticed condensation at all.  I have no doubt it will be there but I think the shed gets quite warm during the day as it is in the sun.

For some time now I have had a coiple of problems when riding.

1. My back is suffering from a cold draught getting in under the right hand side of my jacket.  (Note not the left had side)

2. Since having to wear glasses for driving I have problems with them steaming up.

First one cured as I ordered a kidney belt off fleabay.  Had it on yesterday and was lovely and warm with no draft at all getting inside the jacket.  My jacket has the short zip to attach to the trousers but it did nothing to prevent my back getting a cold draught and this does.

Second the glasses.  I have tried all sorts to stop them from steaming up without success.  I have used Fog visor spray and it doesn't work in the slightest. I have tried Fairy liquid (other brands are available) I have not tried half of a potato rubbed on them (us older guys will know about that rather than young plumbers!!!!!).  Then I remembered shaving foam.  I read about it some years ago and used to use it on the inside of the doors on the bus so I could see the nearside mirror.  They used to get so steamed up when you had a load of soggy passengers on that it was impossible to see down the nearside which is a little bit dangerous.  So I used that on the glasses yesterday and it worked....ish!  For the first time since I had to wear them I ahve been able to have my visor closed fully without steaming up.  As it happens I can ride with the visor open on the TEX the way the screen is without much of a problem but it is warmer to have it closed completely and quieter too.  So yesterday when I did the glasses would still steam us if I was breathing quite heavily BUT they would clear instantly.

So now I think I just need to give them another application and make sure I do it evenly on the inside and outside of both sides as yesterday one side was better than the other and then I think I have sorted that out as well.

It was also the first time I have been out on my own on the new tyres for a good run.  I always take it a bit slower when Jane is on the back, not because she is scared but more for her comfort and that added margin of safety.  Yesterday I went across to Lincoln and took a road that I know well and has a lot of tight bends.  I began to push the bike a bit and noticed that my confidence grew and I was cornering faster than usual.  When I got back I noticed that I had reduced the size of my chicken strips considerably!  Not that I have ever been bothered about chicken strips one way or the other but it is a good indication that I am getting the bike much further over on the new tyres than with the old ones.  The bike feel so much more planted and is turning into bends without effort at all in fact so much that when I forget and put a bit of pressure on the bars like I used to have to I am having to adjust to stop turning as quick.

So a good ride out and a couple of niggles sorted that is what I call a good day. :D :D

I used to love ridding around Lincolnshire, fantastic roads for it and loads of bikers to give a nod too.

The road that went along the east side of the Trent I especially liked as it was always quiet. Great in the mornings Gainsbourugh and then head north through Walkerith, Wilsdworth and Eastferry etc. I almost bought a house in Wildsworth I liked it so much. I would imagine you will know the Bardney bends Fuby and the road through to Market Rasen from Wragby.  Cracking bike road and great on a week day when there are not too many bike nutters in romper suits about.

Someone on the RATS facebook group has just commented that there have been 8 motorcyclist deaths this year on Lincolnshire roads.  I still as an ex instructor am frustrated by the lack of further training taken by people who think they can ride!

Used to come upon some bad offs on those roads heading for Willingham Woods for the ritual mass gatherings :D Not as many good roads about here, but mainly due to standard of surface being crap!

Bike was buried in the shed:

After :D Added old carpet from stairs to floor and as window screens to keep eyes out and sun to help control temp changes/condensation for summer time. Even fired up some old number plates all from the Octy vRS :D (and the Z1000SX's Dutch one too).

That has far more usable space than mine.  Once the bike is in there is little room left as there is a freezer on one corner and a shelf next to it.  Problem is the bike having to swing round to come out otherwise there would be no room at one end at all.  I am still thinking about insulating mine and it is more to do with CBA than financial.  I spend very little time in there so don't notice how cold it is.

Was going to insulate mine, but with condensation side of things I am not going to even think about it now. Would need to leave a good cavity and then hope it's not all rotting fast behind it etc. Moving a box I found a damp patch inside which I need to investigate further now, but can't do anything really until the summer when it gets a chance to dry out at some point. I stained it last summer but didn't do the wall by the fence as it's mega tight to get in and a pain in the hole, just never got round to doing it in end. This was a vital mistake as the rest of the shed the water beeds off it and that wall it seems to take the water bahhhhhh.

Booked in my sons 2008 Kawasaki KLE 500 for MOT tomorrow. Checked it over, adjusted/lubed chain and took it out for a blast with the grips on full heat. Lovely. It is still a good bike and I like riding it, sitting high up looking over the hedges and obstructions.

Gave it a good clean and hopeful everything will be fine tomorrow.

KLE 500 now with MOT, so I took it for a celebratory ride (using my son's fuel).

Oxford heated grips are brilliant.

Sunny day ( if a bit cool ), day off, heated grips fitted......

Little spin to Rhayader and Builth Wells, very enjoyable too.

So I've had the week off work which has been lovely, I've even managed to avoid the bad weather and fit in two nice rides. It's been nice to get a little more used to my new(ish) VFR and have been able to get much more of a feel for it now. I can't say enough good things about the bike, it's well made which you can tell when you're riding and this alone gives you a lot more confidence and makes you feel like you're in a good place. It picks up the speed very nicely and corners extremely well. I've not once thought to myself that it needs any more power at all. The sound of the V4 engine is addictive, especially when the VTEC kicks in. The only negative to this is that I've only managed 115 miles from my last tank of fuel! I'm hoping that once I'm used to the bike and use the power a little less then the mileage should increase.

Since having the Quill exhaust system fitted soon after buying the bike I've only actually been out on it two or three times, but today I really noticed that the exhuast sounded a lot deeper and louder. I'm not sure if this is my imagination, could there be a reason behind this? Is there a bedding in period with new exhausts?

I must say how much I love the bike, if anyone is considering a VFR800 VTEC I can't recommend mine enough.

good to hear mate!

I can get nearly 200 miles to a tank when im on a run out somewhere. What i did notice though is it dramatically drops if you use the VTEC alot. It must throw quite alot of fuel in then.

Maybe the exhaust is bedding in?

Glad you're enjoying it anyway! Far too much salt on the roads around me to even consider going out on it atm :(. sad times

Almost 200???!!!

I haven't been hanging around and have been up the top end of the revs a bit. I'll have to be more sensible haha.

I never ever got more than 170 before the warning light came on no matter how I rode.  If you ue the revs and the to end of the power you will use more fuel that is a given. Thing is you can either enjoy the ride and to hell with the cost or you can ride slower and save money.  You will enjoy bth but ne more than the other and only you and your wallet can make that decision.

I know the TEX exhaust sounds great with higher revs and it is so easy to use them all the time and as a result burn more fuel but I don't actually care because it is a thing of pleasure and not a workhorse carying me to work and back each day.  I notice when I ride with the RATS the bike is doing more than 50mpg and when I ride on my own it is far less than that.  Reason being as a group they ride within the speed limit and to keep together quite slow at times.  I, on my own ride to what I think is OK given my traning and skill level and I am prepared to be dealt with 'if' I am caught.

I'm not advocating riding like a nutter but I'm saying that I don't ride like Aunt Daisy and I use the power sensibly and that has always worked for me over the years without incident.

Don't forget though while the exhaust is addictive listen to it through ear plugs for the long term issues with hearing if not and above all else enjoy each and every ride.

Its because Oli rides like a girl.

He'll be buying a red 3 cylinder bike soon :-)

Yeah but thats sat on the motorway. Just mile munching really. One service station to the next.

If you cruise above vtec on the motorway (which is 100mph) , it really starts drinking it then.

I only use my bike for enjoyment so I don't really mind getting low miles, once the warmer weather comes and I go for longer rides and less blasts I'm sure it'll become more realistic. As long as I'm smiling I think £20 for a tank of fun is cheaper than buying fags or booze!

As long as you're enjoying it thats all that really counts at all.

Cant be like the Firestorm anyway. Reports of 80 mile tank range.. If you dont hoon it too much :D.

I'm happy if I hit 140 to a 17l tank

Yeah not bad that mate!

I think the VFR has a 21l tank. Not that it makes much difference. Its the range that matters isnt it aha

Cleared it of finance! Woooo, first time I've ever done anything sensible in my life.

Woo. Good idea mate!

Much nicer owning it, i feel. Especially with a bike which for me atleast is just a toy.

Think of all the spare money youll have each month to spend on bike stuff ;)

That's exactly it, I was reluctant to get a bike on finance because I'd feel guilty having it sat about for most of the year while we pay for it but got carried away when shopping lol. This year is suppose to be the sensible paying off debt year so we can get a house/wedding in the year or two following....... but I'm sure I can squeeze a few bike bits along the way, got my eye on a helmet and some other little bits. :D

Thats it mate. Financing a car is bad enough imo (i dont even do that personally) but my bike sits without being used for a few months over winter :D.

Ooh a wedding. Im sure you can squeeze a few bike bits in without her noticing. ;):D

Flash bus drivers with all the money you get. :D

Today for the first time in just over 4 months!!!! (3 of which is was not possible to get it out then cba) The bike is free! Good going over, tyre pressures set 36/40 new battery seems to still work after a week or so...... and it's dry ish today with blue skies, but bloody freezing. Now I have run out of time so it's cooling off having run to top fans on and off then killed it for the day. Back in it's wooden box when cooled down and maybe tomorrow will be the day :D :D :D
