VRS CR 170 Remap - What's the car really like?

Featured Replies

Hey all

I'm aware there's a number of people on here who have the TDi VRS Common Rail FL MK II Octy. I'm seriously considering running it down to shark to have them bang a stage 1 on it.

Trouble is, I can't help but think I'm not quite going to get the performance increase I'm expecting. Yes, I realise it's only 170bhp stock so I'm not going to get miracles from the engine (believe the CR engine is best at max 205bhp and anymore is 'wasted'), but even now putting my foot down seems responsive enough.

Take 3rd gear as an example. It pulls well in that gear already and I'm struggling to understand how it can gain such a huge increase in torque for what I personally believe, is such a conservative engine. So, I put it to you out there whom have (obviously) had a remap to this car and please tell me exactly and I mean exactly what the difference is and how your enjoyment has changed since getting one done. Convince me to get it mapped   :D

Thanks.

  • I'll watch this with interest. I have the 170vrs pd and I've been considering a remap as i feel the car has a bit more to give. I also believe removing the dpf does help them breath ( yes i know ).

  • Right guys an update. I got a Shark remap on the vrs tdi yesterday and well very impressive i will say. Remapped at Brotek in Lanark by Mark great bloke knows his stuff so a big thanks to you buddy. H

Hi. I have a mk2 VRs tdi which I had the dpf removed (because it was causing me lots of trouble!) and a remap at about 80,000 miles. Your right it's perfectly alright as standard, but once I had it done it made it much better! Yes it's faster and has much more torque but I don't exactly go racing round in it. It seems easier to drive, as in 6th gear is even more usable right down at low revs and the mpg is definitely higher when driving normally. It's done 154,000 now n still not missed a beat! The only thing i would say is a bit annoying is if I do decide to boot it it does tend to smoke a bit at 3750 rpm upwards but as I said I don't really do that anyway. It's a modest 213 bhp and still to this day doesn't burn oil! Personally I'd do it, hope this is helpful :)

Thanks buddy. I do think these cars are so much better without the dpf i don't think they were ever intended to have them. Brotech i think are the nearest to me so when funds allow it I'll enquire. Love driving it but just can't escape the feeling it could be so much better. It's regened a lot in the short time i have it. I take it for a good run when it's doing it but it's usually at 3am when i just want to get home off nights!!

Interesting responses guys. Regards the DPF removal, I'm led to believe the CR model has much less problems than the earlier PD engines. Having said that, if either model was used primarily for short start/stop distances I imagine the symptoms would be the same none the less. I'm at an advantage as the car does a mixture of long motorway miles (Portmadog from Cheshire) and A/B roads. Just what the DPF needs. So, I personally see no reason to change it and I very much doubt it's going to be needing a regen anytime soon.

A max map for the CR 170 is 215bhp approx which involves DPF removal, fitment of sport exhaust i.e Miltek and of course the stage 2 map. All in all this would set me back probably well over a grand and for an increase of 10bhp over stage 1. Not worth it IMHO. I also don't like the idea that it smokes at high revs but agree with the fact it isn't being booted all the time, similar to myself. Not sure I agree with the statement the DPF wasn't designed for it though but each to their own.

Either way, nice to hear peoples opinions. Hopefully more will follow.

My cr170 put out 190bhp stock on a dyno. With my tuning box on the top setting, another 15bhp was gained. Feels a lot more tbh and the curve is smoother.

So if i decided to get a remap who does the best maps? Shark were always highly recommended for petrol engines but not sure for diesels.

Very interesting this. Incidentally, your running a Shark stage 1 yet you claim 212bhp? Thought a stage 1 from shark gets in the 205bhp range. Am I missing something or was it just a really good dyno run?

@mikejay, loving the pics of your car - looks exactly the same as mine, except I'm petrol DSG and unmapped.

To be fair, don't think the petrol vRS needs a map. My 1.8 TSI Scout would benefit from one though - if that had 200bhp it'd be the perfect all-rounder!

Shark would get most peoples votes on this forum for a remap. They've cracked the encryption on the ecu too so no need to take the ecu apart to flash it. They also can do a remap remotely via their hand held unit too. There was a group buy on here not long ago for the very same thing so you could PM a couple who've done it to get first hand experience. The biggest changes you would see is an increase in the spread of the power with peak piwer being further up the rev range plus it being more responsive on part throttle when you're not giving it the beans. Do it.......

205 is only an aaprox. It was on awesomes rollers. I aways use vpower and the guy who did the session said he can always tell when a cars useing performance fuel on the dyno. And yeah the dpf is still fitted

I've just emailed Mark at Brotek near Edinburgh. Very helpful fella i must say. He quotes 205bhp stage 1. I asked about dpf removal too. He informed me he's moving away from that now. Not sure if its illegal for him to do it but he said vosa are currently trying to bring in pressure tests on exhausts to test for the presence of them. Anyway, for now my dpf stays. But £270 with Briskoda discount for stage 1 seems reasonable.

That's not a bad price. I think 205 is about the safe limit with a dpf fitted, judging by previous accounts.

I did ask him about the dpf possibly being affected by a remap. He said there would be no issues. The car goes well standard so an extra 30 bhp will make it a bit of a machine!

Thats a pd mate not a cr

The best thing I did to my Superb Estate and the Yeti (both 170CR) was to get Shark to remap them... they are just sooo much nicer to drive with a decent smooth remap on them!

What they said! I had mine (170CR Yeti) done at Shark HQ last summer and it made a good car even better.

From what the mapper says it looks like the best way is keep the dpf and just remap it. he can map the egr out if i want but he hasn't heard of the 2.0 pd having issues with it.
