VRS CR 170 Remap - What's the car really like?

Featured Replies

Oh to emphasise how much I rate them, I drove from Folkestone to Mansfield (both times) to get Shark to map them.

  • I'll watch this with interest. I have the 170vrs pd and I've been considering a remap as i feel the car has a bit more to give. I also believe removing the dpf does help them breath ( yes i know ).

  • Right guys an update. I got a Shark remap on the vrs tdi yesterday and well very impressive i will say. Remapped at Brotek in Lanark by Mark great bloke knows his stuff so a big thanks to you buddy. H

Hi. I have a mk2 VRs tdi which I had the dpf removed (because it was causing me lots of trouble!) and a remap at about 80,000 miles. Your right it's perfectly alright as standard, but once I had it d

Some top replies here guys. Deffo going the shark route just need to make sure I get the best insurance quote possible. Will try Adrian Flux as they seem to get a good shout on here.

I've gone with Shark in July. Brotek for me. Can't wait!!

I'm booked in with revo for engine and dsg.. I was planning sharks but it's quite a trip for me being in poole and the extra cost not worth it Imo...

Revo by me have a great reputation done me a deal and it's 5 minutes from my house

We should post back on here after they're done. Compare notes!!

Yeah would be up for that was thinking also doing a standard vs map video from standing start in sport mode.. but mine is tdi + dsg what's your mate

Mines the 170pd manual.

OK mine cr but still be interesting will post up mine is on the 10th of july

I went for dt tuning box as I wanted the option of selling it if I got rid of the car. I get better power and get an extra 10mpg on a good run and being careful I can get 60mpg

As you know from the PM's mines a VRS CR and mapped, the CR isn't as punchy as the PD but I'd also expect it to have less issues with the DMF because of the smoother power delivery. As sataed its not a massive gain like you see with some cars but still the best bang for buck you can ever spend. I've never failed to be impressed yet by having a car remapped.

Also after the initial phase of wanting to boot it more (when you stop being a madman with all the extra power..may just be me) you tend to end up with mildly better economy even on a more power oriented map.

The thing that I've been told holds the CRs back is the EGT's tend to be on the high side when pushing the power, not that 200+bhp from what is otherwise a 2.0 4 cylinder diesel is much to be scoffed at.

Right guys an update. I got a Shark remap on the vrs tdi yesterday and well very impressive i will say. Remapped at Brotek in Lanark by Mark great bloke knows his stuff so a big thanks to you buddy. He was all set up waiting for me and it probably took a couple of hours. Scanned for faults first all ok took the car out after mapping checking for faults anywhere. The car now really picks up. Midrange punch is a lot stronger and it feels a lot more responsive now. It went well before but it just felt like it was holding back a bit but it's the car i wanted now. I did do some midrange and top gear acceleration times before and after. I won't say speeds or anything but one particular speed range it looks like it's took about 7 seconds off!! Mark you're a top fella.

Ooh Lanark you say? That's not too far away from me :)

It shows as £299 on their website - is that the current price? Did they put it on rollers?

I'm very tempted to get mine done, keep meaning to call insurance co. to check how much they'll charge me.

mine has a stage 1 performance torque map and is running 212 bhp and 345 ft lb of torque , smooth as silk , no smoke , dpf still in place

this is the 6 th car i have had done and would highly recomend it , had a mk 2 petrol a couple of years ago and that made 252 bhp that was a quick car but wheel spin was a problem lol

It seems there is Brotek in Lanark (Shark) and Falkland Performance in Fife (Revo) both not too far from me.

Which is the best remap and what is a rough price?

170 CR FL.

I've got my map Friday can't come quick enough for me got day off aswel..... hopefully we have a big smile on my face after plus with dsg map

You going to get launch control activated?

You going to get launch control activated?

Mine already has lanch control as standard if you go into sport turn off traction control and put foot on brake plant the a accelerator down release brake and away you go... if you do this in drive the clutch will bite but in sport as above it doesn't not engage until the brake is released..

But looking forward to dsg map as they say completely changes the car

What are the clutches like on our VRS's? I'm at 85k miles, no problems that I've found with the car. If I get it mapped am I likely to need a clutch 2k miles later? Or are they pretty strong?

I don't drive like a **** and am generally reasonably nice to cars (until they are about to be replace :D) but it's my only real concern with a remap.

I'm in Carlisle but Brotek are the nearest Shark mapper to me. The price was £270 he gave me 10% off as a Briskoda member. I was unsure too it's a lot of money to spend on a car there isn't anything wrong with but honestly it's so much nicer to drive now. The car it shouldve been. It'll be the best thing you will do to the car.

Hey all. Finally pulled the trigger and the car is booked in for middle of August for stage 1. Can't bloody wait! My old man is well jell ha ha!! Poor bloke has a Focus Zetec 1.6 and has about as much poke as a broken finger.

Anyways, just wondering what did people pay? I'm being quoted £450 inc vat (with membership discount) and £60 plus vat to get it on a dyno run making a grand total of £520. That sound right?

Iv fitted the DTUK box to mine also (2009 CR170) There are 6 dif settings and I went for the full power lol. Its loads quicker but I haven't really seen any improved MPG.

I was getting low 40's before and mid 40's after with just over 50 on a run.

Which setting do you have yours on?

It seems Brotek can't do the encrypted ECU's yet. Waiting on decryption software seemingly but no timescale yet.

Shark have cracked the ECU encryption. I'm not sure if that applies to their remaps they offer via their agents but you can get it done remotely via their hand held unit so if you're after a remap on an encrypted ECU you could give them a call, or look into a DTUK tuning box as an alternative which again does not require physically opening up your ECU. Good luck

What does everyone mean by an encrypted ecu? Are they on the diesels? Brotek didn't open up my ecu as far as I'm aware.

The encrypted ECU'S came in about 2009 I think to try and stop remapping via the ODB port. Mk 1's and some early CR's are OK but later ones are encrypted and need to be taken out and done on the bench.

I will contact Shark to see they say.
