Advice please regarding towbar install causing lane assist error

Featured Replies

Help please if possible I recently had a towbar fitted to my car and after fitting have had an error with the lane assist on the dash. The chap who fitted advised he had tried all he could with his coding machine but didn't know why it had come on.

The car was due for a service soon so he suggested it may need the dealers computer system to clear the codes or reset something.

It has been today and the dealer has advised they have tried 'everything' but cannot get it to clear and advise they only resolution to the fault is to have the towbar removed.

Is this likely to be true or are they just bluffing because I didnt spend the £1200 they wanted to fit one?

Has anyone come across this before and if so how did you resolve it? Is this fixable by vcds?

I will be speaking to the company that intsalled the towbar but don't think there going to have the answer.

Any help would be appreciated.

Dealer fitted towbar should "only" be around £500

I don't think removing the towbar will make any difference, as it is a coding issue not a physical one.

I spent £600 on mine full dealer fit and I didn't negoiate as I'd already had a good discount on the car.

Get the installer to put it right or if they can't, remove it and refund you.

If they remove it, they have to cure the fault, and if they can't find the fault now, how will they find it when they remove the towbar, I'd get them to agree in writing to settling the bill for curing the fault, as maybe the dealer would be a bit more willing to investigate the problem if it's a paid job, rather than a "freeby" tagged onto a service.

Interesting the difference in prices maybe they weren't keen on doing the job?

I am communicating with the company that fitted the towbar was hoping for a simple fix rather than having to go for removal

Just been quoted £385 by dealer to add detachable tow bar to new order octavia.

Anyone else had problems with a tow bar?

The towbar isn't the issue, its the electrical loom that needs to be correct and coded correctly otherwise, your gonna get errors and bit'n'pieces that just don't work.

I had an auxiliary connector block with a bent pin which in turn, pushed out the female spade, the resulting errors were unbelievible, DSG Oil Temp. Critical, Brake Servo Failure a whole range of "don't use this car" messages.

Bottom line is, you just can't **** with the canbus system or it'll **** you back !

I saw this about a year ago on a dealer fitted towbar - the A5 camera needs coding for the towbar, simples.

It is a documented tick box in VCDS, not hard to find. If you need me to get a screenshot, let me know.

if I could trouble you for a screen shot that would be great then i could show to it to the dealer and hopefully it will be a quick job for them.

many many thanks in advance

A VCDS screenshot won't mean much to dealer :)

I'll grab one tomorrow night if no-one beats me to it

Was hoping to use the vcds owners map thingy and find a willing person close by who could help......beer/wine/money could be provided in return

You don't need a screenshot - if they go in to the A5 camera module then Long Coding and go through each byte it is labelled and just needs a tick in the box
