Skoda and their dealerships getting too big for their boots!

Featured Replies

Hi guys I have been trying to get a deal sorted out on 0% PCP fo a few weeks now but not managed to get figures that I'm comfortable with. I have s poken to several dealerships to get price and I know at 0% your discount is limited to 6-7%. One thing I've noticed is dealerships not returning calls in timely intervals also not even offering any discount in one or two cases and not giving you finance figures you've asked for! That coupled with the discontinuation of free sat nav seems to me that Skoda are getting a little bit too ' cocky' and self assured. My fear is that Skoda will be a victim of its own success and will believe it is a premium brand when in reality it isn't. Do t get me wrong, I thing their cars are great but the above combined with the pricing seems that they are no longer the bargain they once were and are becoming expensive for what they are. As a consequence, I'm now looking at SEAT as they appear to be cheaper yet same chassis and engines. I also think that too many people are jumping on the Skoda band wagon now and this would explain the above. As much as I rate Skodas, especially Octavias, they are Skodas at the end of the day, nothing more. I'm actually starting to be put off the brand and my last four cars have been Skodas. Rant over, I had to get that off my chest!

Not just Skoda.

Was going for a Merc C class but gave up after failed attempts to get either a call back or anything put list price plus dealer add ons.

Mitsubshi, BMW, VW, Jaguar and Audi the same.

Skoda was just as much hard work......too many people buying new cars mean they are not as desperate for business.

Why did I end up going back to skoda? They where the only dealership to give a ok deal with no where near as much hassle.

have a look at taking out a pch, you will save on amount of deposit/monthly rental, keep saved deposit in an isa for the duration of the lease, you may end up with it being more than the equity from pcp baloon payment, with the bonus that the greedy dealers dont make as much as if they would have sold it to you

Bear in mind any dealer now is likely to be selling several other brands. The salesman when I bought my car had been selling fords a couple of weeks earlier and was transferred to the skoda dealership after someone left.

Our two local dealerships sell cars from 4 and 6 different manufacturers respectively.

I've not had dealership trouble but agree that a rethink is needed for my next purchase.

My 2008 1.8 TSi Mk. 2 Elegance cost me a bit over £12K and had a lot more going for it than my Oct. 2014 Mk. 3 1.4 SE at around £19K, even though I still like the latter.

Ok there was 6 years between them but I think something in the pricing policy has changed a lot.

I didn't consider other makes at the time. Next time I will, unless something in our favour  changes again.

Use an online pricing service or broker - drivethedeal etc.

Takes most of the hassle out of it, you can get the price you want then offer it to a few local dealers in a simple 'match this and I will order now' situation. One of them will :)

Yep, the Octavia has moved upwards into Superb pricing territory. Next time round I'm going to look at the Superb now has been updated.

We got the sat nav free!!!!

We got the sat nav free!!!!

I'd sooner have had the cruise for free!

I can't fault my dealer (West End Skoda Broxburn). Always phone when they say they will, never had anything but brilliant sales and service from them. I do agree that Skoda cars are getting pricey though, but, they are much better cars these days.

The price thing is inevitable.  Skoda had to use low prices to get people to take them seriously after the poor east European type cars they used to turn out.  They have successfully turned round the perception and people increasingly see them as better than brands like Ford and Vauxhall.  It follows that they will end up being more expensive than Fords and Vauxhalls.

I've done all the main brokers for prices etc. and to be honest, they're ok as long as you're paying cash and/or not using a part-ex. A workmate of mine has ordered a Ford Focus ST-3 TDi and got 20% discount for cash purchase through drive the deal. He had to take out bit of a Ford finance to get that discount but he says he'll just clear it off at the first opportunity within a month or two of taking delivery of the car. He has the money to buy the car outright. I'm finding it difficult to find a good local dealership to try to get a deal with. The hunt continues for that new car!

To be fair, the better the deal for you, the worse the deal for the dealership/salesperson.

I had to move round multiple Skoda dealers to get the deal I wanted. I had even worse experiences with Kia who really didn't like the idea of a 24 hour testdrive, then seemed to ignore my calls!

If you are in Manchester, try Lightcliffe at Warrington or Alex Lawrie in Liverpool.

The problem with most car dealerships is they are just a franchise & in no way part of Skoda or any other manufacturer.

The have an agreement to buy cars from Skoda at price X and sell them to you for the list price.

Any reduction the dealer gives you is less money in their pocket.

Skoda will offer some incentives like free SatNav or free ACC but in the end, the less profeit the will make because you are driving a hard deal, the less interested & enthusiastic they are going to be.

Its still true that many dealerships have monthly & quarterly sales targets so I always recommend to make it clear that you want to order by the end of the month.

If they are close to the sales target, they will often accept a reduced profeit on the car to get them close to their nice monthly bonus...

If you are in Manchester, try Lightcliffe at Warrington or Alex Lawrie in Liverpool.

Or Mitchells near Cheshire Oaks, near M56/M53 junction, Ellesmere Port. Possibly same distance as Alex Lawrie. And friendlier, more helpful staff.

Thanks for the opinions guys. The broker route is interesting. A lot don't really want you using a part-ex. They tend to give biggest discount for cash purchase which is fair enough. What is interesting is that some brokers quote the cheapest price and mention the manufacturer specific offers i.e. Skoda's 0% but they don't all state that the discount will be lower due to the 0%. Anyway, I've asked for a quote from a broker and I'm waiting to hear back so fingers crossed.

Carwow were pretty clear on the level of discount with the offers. I got a cash price and a subsidised finance price.

At the end of the day it is the price to change that is important, get a feel for the level of discount you can get then get a few p/ex prices against that discount and you know where you stand.
