window wipers - is this normal?

Featured Replies

hi all

noticed today on my 3 week old VRS that the window wipers seem to be sticking and juddering slightly. and also making a bit of a racket. is this normal?

Not sure how to upload short video of it? its 18.2mb

Can't say that's normal behaviour on my VRS! I'd get the dealer to check that if it were me.

Not sure on video uploading, you could upload it to Youtube and link to it?

I get this too....

Chances are the dealer would have cleaned the car before delivery and I'd guess they have polished the screen with something

Give it a good clean with a good glass cleaner and take it from there.

Upload the video to YouTube or a similar site and post a link here.

Sounds like it's not running over the glass smoothly to me, as above give the rubbers and screen a clean, possible wax on the screen.

This is a problem that has been highlighted before. I suffered the same when car was new & the wipers would stick on their way across and clatter into the A pillar. Dealer refused to adjust them so I gave the screen a good clean with a good quality cleaner - didn't work so I resorted to the old fashioned remedy of white vinegar & water then polish off with screwed up newsprint. That worked for me & others on here. Car now almost 2 years old & never happened since although I still clean the screen the same way.

This was the method of window cleaning years ago when all the spray cleaners didn't exist.

Use the vinegar & water solution to wipe the wiper rubber edges.

Hi

Link to video here.

I have noticed, the first few wipes it seems to be ok and then gets progressively worse

As stated, probably wax from doing the bodywork has got on the scree. It's a while now but, think mine had a hazy smearing when it got wet. Clean the screen and along the length of each blade

Seems to be that the consensus is there is something on the glass!

I've never had the issue, but I have cleaned the windscreen regularly with Autoglym Fast Glass so maybe that's why.

I would say 100% it is contamination of the glass with wax - the horrible cheap spray on instant shine stuff that the £5 hand wash places use

+1 for Autoglym fast glass (or vinegar/water) to clean whatever they have put on it, but if it is still a problem Autoglym car glass polish was the only thing that worked for me on a previous machine that was a real b***ch for it

My VRS did it too.  After more than a few times of driving in the rain it seems to have sorted itself out.  Probably like the others are saying some wax contamination that eventually gets washed off with enough rain.

also afterwards try some of the skoda washer additive with some hot water and rub into the screen with a soft cloth, then dry with soft cloth, improves vision greatly

+1 for Autoglym, both are good particularly the glass polish. Halfords still have the 3 for 2 offer on which covers both these products (Fast Glass can be used on plastics too so can be used on our headlights and black trims on the B pillars).

All great suggestions just one piece of advice missing, clean the wipers themselves as well as the glass, whatever is on your screen is almost certainly on your wiper blades now also.

You must have missed posts 6,7 & 12!!!!!!

So I did, thanks for pointing out

  • 2 weeks later...

Do what I did.

1.call dealer

2. Explain problem and moan

3. Mention that as it's a new car they should work correctly.

4. Mention it is a safety issue and is causing reduced visibility in the rain.

5. Accept a new set of blades from the dealer.

Job done

MK7 golfs all suffer from this badly, & various things cure it. New Bosch aero wipes work way better than the factory ones, & clean the screen as they are heavy contaminated! I told my dealer not to clean the car as I would be doing it myself. Meths didn't work, AG glass polish failed, so G-technique glass polish did work & took three applications to get rid of the carp on all glass inside & out!!!!..

It is something to do with the glass manufacturing process, paper protectors (on rear screen inside), train transportation pollution (from factory to port) etc., etc.
