It's a new-ish DQ381 7-speed wet clutch, which has been used in other VAG applications since 2016 or so. Nothing to do with the old DQ200 7-speed dry clutch if that's what you meant.

Ah I figured as much. I have to say a 7 speed would be nice but I tihnk they'd had the 6 wet long enough to iron out most of the kinks by the time it went in to mine. My old Octavia had the 7 speed dry and I had to have it rebuilt at a cost of about £3k

Yeap, the 7-speed dry DQ200 wasn't without its faults although personally it gave me 5 trouble-free years in the Fabia mk2 vRS, and half of them it was running extra torque too at around 330-340Nm when it was officially rated for only 250. I know others haven't been so lucky even on stock cars.

The wet 7-speed in the 272 is a different story, more of an evolution of the 6-speed DQ250 I believe and during my time in the Golf forums people were raving about its speed and smoothness. I can't really say I ever felt the 6-speed being slow in changes, however in very particular occasions it was unexpectedly hesitant to pick up my commands, more so than the 7 speed dry. However neither that one ever gave me any trouble/faults. My biggest gripe was that when doing a steady speed of 150-160km/h which comes so easily with these cars (where allowed to do so obviously) it was revving un-necessarily high so I was really after that extra 7th gear which I've seen that brings the revving down considerably in this scenario. One of the main reasons I didn't want to go for a used one (they all still got the 6speed around here).

Let's see if it lives up to the expectations...

The DQ381 is the 4-wheel drive version of the DQ380.
From 2017 on the DQ381 gearbox was being deployed worldwide, in various models.
This gearbox is a smaller version of the DQ500, which can be found on the Audi RS3/TT-RS.

the DQ380 has been around since 2015, though exclusively only available in the Chinese market.  It is only recently that its now being opened to the rest of the world.

lots of info here - http://www.tvsengineering.nl/en/gearbox/dsg/dq380.html

Absolutely right, I had come across that article a while ago when I started investigating about the DQ381. What I meant above is that the DQ381, being based on the DQ500, which was in turn an evolution of the DQ250 are all based on the wet-clutch principle and have been thoroughly tried in the real world already, it's nothing like the novelties that the DQ200 7-speed dry brought back in 2010 (along with some issues).

That been said, minor issues like software or other "bugs" can't be completely excluded but overall it's based on a rather proven concept/application is what I wanted to stress.

I plan on starting a similar: "The DQ381 thread" (unless someone beats me to it :tongueout:) once I receive mine as we could start gathering useful info and findings of its overall real-life behavior and characteristics, especially against the well-known DQ250. I guess that like myself, quite a few DQ381 owners might probably have driven the DQ250 in the past so that would provide a nice back-to-back comparison. One thing which I still haven't managed to source is the exact gear ratios of the new 'box.

As some of you might remember I sold my Business Grey 280 Sportline  a couple of months ago as we were 'rationalising' our family vehicles and swapped over to a 1.5tsi Karoq Edition .  However plans now changed as Mrs BD now wants to keep her own Polo Blue GT for a while leaving me with the Karoq  which although a great all round vehicle ..... is definitely not a 280 .    Good news is that given rarity of Petrol Karoq Editions , selling again in such a short time will not entail a significant loss and I have sourced a 2 month old 280 Sportline in Moon White with under 1000 miles which is 'pre Sportline / Sportline plus build status'  and has all the associated standard spec. inc. Columbus / 9 inch screen etc plus add'l extras comprising Sunroof  / Canton Sound / Rear Camera.  In final stages of 'negotiation' with dealer and all being well will be driving it by early next week .  Be like getting back into my favourite armchair again ... Happy Days .

It was only a matter of time.....welcome back, stay a while this time.

She would have loved this one ... though possibly not as much as I'm going to love the second 280 ;)

I do wish the Karoq and Kodiaq were a couple of years older as the wife is going to need new wheels at the end of next year and she likes both.

Deal done and pick up scheduled for Monday ... Happy Days

Well I took the decision this weekend to pay off the loan for mine rather than keep paying it monthly. It'll mean no savings pot but it'll save me £1400 in interest (3% deal from Zopa for 5 years). Technically I'd probably be better off if I continued paying it off as the money in the Zopa/Funding Circle would have earned more than the £1,400, but with some changes in work and the kid at nursery a bit more its the monthly payments that are crippling.

So technically all that will be left to pay off the car will be £5k thats on 0% for another 6 months by which time I should be able to clear that too. Will put my mind at rest at least.

This "might" be helpful, but I've no idea if the info quoted is accurate.

Yeah a BMW dealer is maybe not where you'd expect to find technical information about the latest VW gearbox ratios :D but maybe it's a start!, Cheers

It's a Canadian dealer (Vancouver), maybe it's a used car & they have better (local legislation?) access to technical thanwe do in the UK.

I got intrigued so it turns out the BMW dealer was right, simply because he quoted  the numbers from the VW US website! We don't ever get to see this figures here (in Uk or Swedish versions) I think:

I'm assuming they must be identical on the Superb.

Here are the DSG 6 speed in comparison:

MK7 Golf R DQ250 MQB
1st 2.92
2nd 1.83
3rd 1.31
4th 0.97
5th 1.04
6th 0.81
Final 4.77

Clearly a better case for the new 7 speed for both acceleration and cruising, nice...

Have you transposed 4th & 5th?

Nop, I have just copied it from the original source. Also, the same thing happens in the new DQ381 ratios between 5th and 6th directly from VW website, I noticed it earlier and could not really understand why but it does not seem to be a coincidence. It happens between the 3rd and 2nd gears from the end...

Picked the Beast up yesterday from Sinclair Swansea and broke through the 1000 mile barrier on the 245 mile journey back to West Cornwall.   So nice to be back in such an effortless cruiser :)

Not according to my rev counter it doesn't.

Must be a mistake. It makes no sense and is not demonstrated in real life.

I would agree but isn't it a strange coincidence that two independent sources, show the same thing happening between 4th and 5th (5th to 6th on the 7 speed) in two different gearboxes? The first source is from 2015 on the 6-speed, the second one is the current figures of VW US.

Pics? Details?

@Boxerdog1 stunning   Looks like you grabbed yourself another good deal, on an ex-demo.  Enjoy your new 280

I have to say that gear ratios aside, the 280 with just the 6 speed is plenty sharp off the line. If I had a 7th gear I'd want it looonnngggggg.
