I can't see much reference on here to experiences, good or bad...any thoughts?

Not sure about Skoda insurance but they appear to be underwritten by UK Insurance Ltd who are in turn owned by RBS and Direct line groups.  UK Insurance Ltd also have Direct Line, Privilege and Churchill in their portfolio.  They also appear to be behind the insurance of other car manufacturers, such as Mini, BMW and Citroen.

Might be worth opening another, specific thread to see if anyone else has used them.

It's three years ago and I don't have the exact figures but Skoda Insurance wanted over £150 more than I was quoted by my existing insurer, Churchill, for the 280 - and Churchill's premium dropped by about £50 when I changed from my Mk.II 170 TDi Elegance Estate to the Mk.III 280 Hatchback.

When I added the pedal box it wasn't an issue with Churchill. When I added the Tuning Box they (aka the broker) wouldn't insure any performance increase so I switched to LV and the premium dropped another £50 from what Churchill were charging for the unmodified 280.

I was concerned that the LV premium was a "newbie" introduction and that it would go up after a year but it has consistently fallen with each of the two renewals mitigated by the fact the car is getting older so it's insurable value drops each year but I've yet to find anyone on the comparison sites that can undercut LV's renewal premium for the same or very similar cover.

So spend the time looking for the best quote.

I haven't had to make an insurance claim since 1985 so I can't comment on customer service if you ever did need to make a claim. In 1985 I was with the AA and they were atrocious when I had to make a claim!

Thanks  will let you know how I get on

@Chas51 nice write up and glad the guide helped, I haven’t been around much since but happy to hear it is still helping folk.

Glad you're enjoying the new car @Chas51

Tesco Momentum is a few p cheaper per litre and IME the engine seems to prefer it too.  Though Winter fuel must be at the pumps now as my MPG has dropped a few % on comparable journeys.   Though it's still respectable for a car with this much grunt and I didn't buy it for it's economy credentials.

Another little mod I can highly recommend is some paddle extensions; they don't look too aftermarket/cheap/tacky (I went for black) and I can use the paddles with a drop of a pinkey rather than moving my whole hand from my preferred, 10 to 2 grip on the wheel:

Like others have said, great write up @Chas51. We are definitely cheating here by having our lowly 272s :D

I'm just shy of 1000 miles on mine so we're at a similar place. The book said 1500km running in period which is 936 miles...

I hit 937 and absolutely leathered it!

I hadn't been too gentle with mine from new and I always wait for the oil to come up to temp. Saying that, I find it a very relaxing car to drive and it doesn't egg me on like my dearly departed Civic Type R. I had a spirited run the other day along very very wet country roads and it just keeps going!

I've slapped on winter wheels and tyres and now that it's cooler where I am they've come into their own. The haldex must have a big hand in that grip as well though.

Like you, I've fitted mudflaps, debadged the rear badges (except the central emblem) and changed the odd lamp as I like that sort of thing!

I've found that I'll find an excuse to go out for a drive in it. I've not done that since I had my Mark 7 golf GTI so that's very much a positive!

To sum up; love it!

Cheers @penguin17, I’ve yet to try the momentum, there is not really a Tesco particularly close to me despite being in the City, another excuse for a drive I guess!

Thanks for the reminder re the paddles, I recall now your previous posts re these and had though at the time to try these. This might tip Mrs Chas over the edge of comprehension mind

Where can you buy these from? How do they fit on? Might be interested. I like the look of them

Having ordered mine just a few hours ago, I can now start digging on the related threads over the next few months :tongueout:. Funnily, I've been running the same engine on a MK7 for the last 2 years (one of the main reasons I wanted a 280/272 was very much the engine) so it's a bit weird to read about its behaviour in another car.

One thing I notice from owners mpg and acceleration figures is that the extra weight of the car does not seem to have the effect I expected on economy and performance. Chas51's mpg over the first two weeks is definitely better than what I was getting in my previous car which was also 150-180kg lighter, weird. Can't imagine the new 7speed plays a big effect there but definitely I won't complain!

Has anyone dyno'ed a 272 car yet? I somehow have the feeling the actual difference between a 280 will be almost non-existing. If anything, the 0-100 figure has actually improved compared to the 280 (5.5" vs 5.8") but that is probably the more closely packed gear ratios of the new 'box. Anyone got those figures by any chance?

Glad everyone is enjoying, it's pretty much what I've heard from all Superb owners I've talked to (although not many 280 ones)

Mk7 ?  Golf R perhaps? If so, in our experience a Golf R  can average low 30's mpg driven normally......

I'd happily swap my Superb 2 for a new Mk3 272 / 280 but they're just a bit too big for my garage.

It would appear you can buy them from the link provided, think of it as a belated Christmas present

Almost, a GTI Clubsport 290. My long term average is 25 mpg (although my commute is only 7 miles) and during the first two weeks that were quoted above I think I barely got over 20, new car excitement and all...

My garage is rather small too. It can get in ok but being 6cm wider than the golf I think the bikes will have a hard time going out so I need to figure out how to sort this eventually...

Still that wasn't enough to put me off!

Aaah, that Golf........

My problem isn't bikes. or other stuff stored in there, I can't get the door open far enough to get in / out.

The old Superb is skinny & easier to park, quite economical too @ 37 long term mpg but even though it's only 252 ps, FWD means rapid departures require a light foot.

Our compromise was to keep the old girl & buy a newish Golf instead.....

Yes, Aliexpress link in my post.

Whatever you do, don't buy them from UK sellers on eBay.  With some level of confidence I'm sure these are the same ones that I got direct from China but I paid £8 and not the £25-40 that UK sellers are asking.

I was blind to that link, oops1

Anyway I went on last night and tried to order therm from Aliexpress but they kept declining my credit or bank cards and asked me to go furtehr security details to appeal!. The page said they would let me know in a few days so I aborted teh rpocess, didnt seem secure. Has anyone experienced teh same?

Being ever the cynic, especially when it comes to stuff like this, I bet that's true. The quoted figure surely has mostly to do with politics / brand positioning within VW Group. The really odd bit is the departure from a round number: like every unit that rolls off the line would produce a precise reading of 272ps (or the kW equivalent).

It actually is a round number... 200 kW.

After months of procrastination I finally bit the bullet and ordered a 272 today. I got the Sportline Plus in Meteor Grey, with Park assist, Virtual cockpit, Variable boot floor, Spare tyre, Traffic sign recognition and Boot Access Rear Seat release (latter 2 got after haggling around another £200 off). I didn't get DCC or Canton as it would have pushed it over another £1k. Looking forward to March!

Congrats! Welcome to the "March delivery" club :D  I ordered a 272 on Thursday (Sweden) in Quartz Grey, after a good 3 pages of discussing extras (thread is in the MK3 section).

Username sounds too Greek to be a coincidence? Or maybe an ancient history lover!

Hi newbie69 - yes the latter rather than the former, well spotted! I read and enjoyed your posts although you seem to get a lot of extra spec as standard in Sweden?  Lets see whether March is a realistic deadline....

Well there was/is this campaign which really added lots of expensive extras in, otherwise I wouldn't have paid for half of those options, especially the more luxury ones like the cabin pre-heating, lane assist, etc etc

Out of interest, how is the 272 delivering 7th gear? Wet or dry?

It's a new-ish DQ381 7-speed wet clutch, which has been used in other VAG applications since 2016 or so. Nothing to do with the old DQ200 7-speed dry clutch if that's what you meant.
