I have to say that gear ratios aside, the 280 with just the 6 speed is plenty sharp off the line. If I had a 7th gear I'd want it looonnngggggg.

That was my main gripe in the 6-speed. Un-necessarily high revving for cruising. The 7th speed of the new box lets you cruise at 100mph with just 2900 rpm, it's silly. Especially on a car like the Superb, it will make long trips a real pleasure, comfortable and quiet.

To be fair another gear would feel just right tbh

We were considering  what to buy as a daily last year, (replacing an EOS, a nice 2-door car but a pain to park) & decided on a Golf R or an S3, both available with the new 7-speed.

The overdrive 7th gear would be useful in Germany, but maintaining 100 mph in the UK  usually =  a fine + a year of walking.

I settled for a year-old 6-speed, 'cos I intend to keep my licence + there aren't that many roads around here that could support 100 mph cruising speeds.

I hear you. From personal experience I can testify that the 6-speed is fine for most of the time, it's not something for which I'd change the car so to speak, far from it. But given the option, between two equally equipped and closely priced cars I'd go for the 7-speed. Was one of the reasons I did the opposite thing than you did and skipped a few used car offers for a new MY19 (also some other options which were not available up to MY18 cars).

You don't have to do 100mph to benefit from it anyway, it will be more relaxed and economical at 70, 80 or 90 as well. Of-course I can't speak about UK conditions and how feasible is that. But by living in 4 different central European countries (and let it be clear that this is just my observations of other road users, not what I do or encourage anyone else to do so of-course)  I would say that on highways where the limit is at 81mph drivers will very rarely (if ever in fact) be stopped or photographed when doing 90 (tacho value, not GPS). And then there's the Autobahn too. If you're in a place where doing trips across Germany is an option then you really get to enjoy all the benefits of those engines and gearboxes. I actually have a really long trans-European trip in my mind for this summer, all the way down to the south of Italy. If the logistics are taken care off, a 280, or actually 272, or actually 360+ Superb with the 7 speed should be just the car to do it in...

Hate to be that guy but, since this en-tire (see what I did there?) discussion is far from "Superb 280" related, wouldn't it be better moved in a dedicated tire thread?

It would keep this thread clean but most importantly it'd be helpful to more owners (not just 280 cars) that are after their next set and would like to see opinions and conclusions, instead of opening new threads.

@Gizmo ?

@Gizmo ?

Maybe but the discussion was around the issue with finding winter or all season tyres and specific to the 19" fitted . Others could have spec`d the alloys I suppose. Rules are rules as they say. Are we banned from posting for a month??? lol

Relax, people are not banned in Briskoda (or any other forum for that matter) for going off-topic. I didn't say it's a bad discussion, it's quite useful but since the issue of 19" winters concerns all Superbs (even Octavias) and is not "280ps" related I believe it would be more helpful if it was posted in the main Superb section, as a separate thread. I can guarantee the questions that are present here will be posted again and again since almost nobody will be able to find this info in the 88th page of a model-specific thread.

Just my 2p obviously.

The tyre discussion has been really interesting and thanks to the posters. Probably fine to be in here as the 19s are much more common on the 280, but I'm sure the mods will decide. FWIW I suspect many non 280 owners like myself look over this thread, if only in envy:).

Only guessing,  but I think you're safe:D.

Isn't the only thing special about our 280s the fact that it has a different engine and exhausts?

My engine has a Steinbauer box fitted to it that came from the dealer, I've still not even tried to find it under the bonnet and turn it off to see if I notice any difference at all.

I'd say 19s are more common on the Sportline in general, be it petrol, diesel, 220 or 280.

280 and AWD is the entire drivetrain already, plus different springs and different gear ratios most probably and maybe other minor differences.

Hmm.

AWD isn't specific to the 280. Springs might be I suppose. Ratios sure that makes sense.

All I'm saying is, if we only discussed what was very specific to the 280s, this thread would not be 89 pages.

My thought about the thread has always been more of a community place to talk about what I might be doing to or with my 280. Things that might well have crossover to other cars, brands, models etc, but I'm talking with 280 folk. Even sportline peasants :o

How are everyone's gear ratios this evening?

Perfectly on my new(ish) 3 month old 6 speed Sportline 280 .... just as nice (in fact perfect)  as my previous Sportline 280  ....  which was reluctantly sold  for 'family consolidation of vehicles' exercise and replaced by a 'very temporary'  Karoq 1.5DSG 7 speed dry clutch SUV !!!    Great car but ............... Situation reversed very quickly at minimal expense thanks to a very nice sub 1000 mile 3 month old  Sportline 280 in a very nice Moon White appearing on Sinclair Swansea's website at c. 27% discount on list . Naturally .......no brainer ..... rest is history  and the beast is in the driveway :) .   And fortunately , living in West Cornwall , I'm not yet obsessed with the summer / winter tyre issue .

@Boxerdog1 very nice. White is the best colour, don't let all those 'undercoat' bods tell you any different... eh @penguin17?

50% of the appeal of owning a Skoda is that they are generally great cars and very good value, the other 50% is Briskoda :tongueout:  Honestly I missed the website when I parted with my Fabia in 2016, and I am equally looking forward to start spending time here again especially from February onwards...

Our Local Dealers has 2 cars (can't remember if they were both octavias or both  Superbs)  sat next to each other on their forecourt.

One is a Velvet Red, the other is a Corrida Red

Whilst a sunny day might bring out the colours better, on the overcast/rainy day we visited, I couldn't see enough difference between them to warrant shelling out the extra money. (mind you if it's an ex-demo and you've no choice, it's not a bad colour)

bring back the older "Rio" red, I say!
