Rob's Ur Quattro

The dash is well dodgy. I was optimistically hoping a better earth would have fixed it but no joy. Could be the voltage regulator in the dash unit - they are prone to failure apparently. I have a new one to go in, need to engage my friend who knows how to solder properly.

Bit of a frustrating afternoon working on the car today. I realised I can't get the front left wheel to turn so investigated that and found that the brake caliper is stuck on. I thought it was all okay but it looks like I'm going to have to remove it and re-check it.

I removed the bonnet locking pins to clean them up and paint them as they're rusty and have been bothering me.

Then I noticed the power steering fluid all over the place. Bugger. It's slowly weeping from the banjo bolt I removed to drain it when I fixed the anti-vibration mounts on the pressure accumulator thingy. Hardly any has made it to the floor, it's all sitting on various brackets and surfaces in the engine. Need to get some new washers I think, drain it again, clean it and re-seal.

Then I decided to look at the passenger side window. I never did get it closing properly. After some investigation I've declared the aftermarket regulator I bought to be useless.
So I need to either source an OEM regulator (rare as unicorn poo) or try and make one good one from the new motor and original vertical bit.

Brake caliper off again because it's not retracting. I suspect it may be toast. Hope not but lumps of rusty stuff came out with the fluid. And I'm struggling to get the pistons out.

The red in the tray is ATF from my leaky power steering.

Started fitting the exhaust.

At this point I declared lunchtime...

After lunch I realised I needed to fit it from back to front to get it seated properly in its new mounts - which entailed drilling holes in my boot floor. So off it all came to be re-fitted.

A new window regulator arrived. Works perfectly. But it's for the wrong side. Bugger.

I took the digital dash apart a bit to find that voltage regulator that I'm told might be the cause of the flickering. Yeah that's beyond my soldering skills. Need to find someone who can help with it.

Also a mate popped around with a G60 caliper for the passenger side. Hero. Got it cleaned up and painted and ready to fit tomorrow.

Then if that's all good I can get the car back on its wheels.

Picked up a box of random 80s Audi parts from another VASK member. Looks useful.

Some good bits in there - lots of door handles, a brand new chrome trim for one, fuel pump and filters, lots of window switches, couple of (I think) 80 rear window regulators, some fasteners, a few KV engine parts,

Initial diagnosis was:

Basically a high voltage break down is happening here ether A : the transformers isolation is breaking down at its High operation voltage and sparking over thus showing it to stop or B: the mosfet drivers that switch the high voltage on the circuit are not getting full saturation and failing
Get Electronic
fixing the issue : i would start to replace the Fets (mostfets) first due too them normally being off the shelf components and the eaisist to replace quickly without trying to get the original transformer that would be ncely priority and only made by audi or rather by contract to audi  and in nothing elce so supply would be hard to get.

After a couple of weeks:

The flickering cause is still undetermined
Possibly won't be able so fix, especially if in the main micro processor
going to try jam in my own Clock signal to run the displays thats the next step
thanks for your patience too !
never expected this one to be such a troublesome unit

the older stuff is usually much more harder to repair
ICs that need replacement are no longer available to change over as parts anymore
were seeing this from about 1997 and below

Yes! I have indicators that work properly. It was just a busted relay.

That box of bits has already proved its worth by giving me reliable window switches.

I've been putting off scraping all that nasty stuff from the back of my boot lid carpet. After two minutes I stuck the scraper into my finger. Time to call it a day.

While I'm waiting for my instrument cluster to come back I've started to think about the stereo. At some point in the past this car had a pretty serious stereo install - for its time - but when I got the car the speakers were falling apart and wiring was a mess so I ripped it all out. So I need to start from scratch wiring in a new stereo. I got an 80s Blaupunkt tape desk with the car, which I hope works!

I'm going to get component speakers for the front doors, and I'm planning to install the tweeters where the tiny factory dash speakers were. I have two speakers with holes drilled like this from the previous tweeter install, and two perfect ones so the design of tweeter I get depends on which I use. I might be able to retain one of the factory speakers just for the voice module when I get that working.

I've ordered one of these Out of Sight Audio Bluetooth/amp units. I did a lot of searching around and this is the only unit I've found that does everything I want. Which is:
Preserve the factory tape deck so it looks and works as normal
Add Bluetooth music streaming
Provide an amp for my four new speakers
Be invisible in normal use
Provide an output for a second amp and sub when needed
