I'm pretty much certain that one or the other of you is right; they should be silver or white, but it depends on whether the spoke pattern is road only, competition only, or one that was used for both.

 

tbh if the wheel has lots of spokes I think silver looks better and if it has big spokes and a deep dish then I prefer white. I realise this has no scientific or restoration basis  :)

 

Road-wise this is the closest I've seen. 15s I think.

The rally versions tended to have 16" 5 spokes in white

Compared to these mine will look massive, with teeny looking brakes.

 

I'm still thinking silver is the way to go.

Tyre choice will make a difference too.

  • Wento for a quick trip to the petrol station. Got sidetracked. I am loving this car! It sounds like it's gargling on the fuel not just drinking it, what an awesome sound!

In my mind all real quattros are rally cars and so have white wheels :D

And they could have a blue and red pinstripe around the edge in homage to that boy racer classic, Weller White Spoke steels.

Woot! Spoiler has landed at the body shop.

But SWMBO was out when wheel delivery was attempted. Have re-scheduled for Friday.

Also I have a (very) vague cost indication from the body shop and it's less than double the original estimate. Could be worse :D

I'm leaving you hanging. Because I had it delivered straight to the body shop and I haven't seen it either.

And I won't be able to go for a look until Saturday either because I have no car - the Skoda failed its Warrant of Fitness last week and I'm awaiting delivery of a new xenon bulb.

That pattern (photo 1) was used on gravel and snow/ice stages back in the day, silver for gravel, and white for snow and ice.

Called in to Just Rust for a quick chat today but for some reason I didn't take any pics. Not like me I know. The rear of the car looks awesome, all done in black underseal, and the inside of the boot looks fantastic too.

Bonnet and wing are re-fitted.

The doors are fully primed now - they were on stands somewhere.

 

They said they need to put aside a few days and it'll be done.

 

Also I collected the wheels from DHL - they look great, big, but great :)

 

I unpacked the spoiler. It looks good! And not damaged, phew! Probably as heavy as the original, which weighs a ton. They were much happier about painting a fibreglass part than a rubber one.

Also there are centre cap bolts but no key to tighten them.

I take it that it's not just hex/torx then?

No it's a weird thing with a central hole and three holes around the edge. From Googling it looks like they used many different patterns, so I'll just need to get a different set. There are loads on EBay which look promising.

If they were the rally versions then I agree white would be the choice, BUT not on these.
