Back on its wheels at last!

  • Wento for a quick trip to the petrol station. Got sidetracked. I am loving this car! It sounds like it's gargling on the fuel not just drinking it, what an awesome sound!

After nearly three hours of mucking about I got the other sunroof drain in place. I used a coathanger to get a small string in there, used that to pull through a rope, then used that to pull the pipe.
It looks a bit squished on the photo, will check that out.
I'm just about ready to get the head liner installed now, then the sunroof can go in.

Some awesome work here! Does it still run (wiring aside), or is there mechanical work to do after the interior/body work?

Is the headliner fabric too like the c-pillars? Have fun, if so! The fabric one on my E30 took aaaages and was a nightmare and needed two people. :( I'd suggest buying a load of bulldog clips if you've not got some already (assuming it tucks under the window/door seals? We glued it to the lip on those apertures, and then held it in place with the clips while it dried)

It does run, yes. The power steering needs sorting out, it makes a bad noise, Maybe old fluid, maybe dodgy pump.

Other than that it needs fluids changed and some new bushes and bits like that.

The headlining, fortunately, is hardboard backed and comes out in one formed piece. Just needs a good scrub before it goes back in.

More scrubbing.

Sunroof is in place. It's not quite closing properly so some adjustment is needed, but it works.

Did a couple of other small jobs

Aerial installed
13653202_801684669931831_479248547246364

Wiper motor in place. I'm missing one of the rubber washers for under the bolts, no idea where to find one. Any ideas? It's 53mm across, and maybe 0.5mm thick.

Rear wiper motor installed and parcel shelf in. One of the speaker grilles has gone missing in my storage area, must have fallen down the back of something, it'll turn up.

Good work, especially the interior cleaning.

I'd probably buy some rubber and cut the washer if struggling to find one.

Plumber's merchant (or Kiwi equivalent!) for the rubber washer Rob?

This is looking really good Rob, it will all be worth it in the end.

Lubricate that sunroof mechanism with some marine type grease - I remember the one in my 80 sport from years ago getting so stiff that it stripped the splines on the drive unit the handle attaches to.

As for prices, they have been steadily increasing over the last few years, good ones like yours are now fetching £25-30k over here. There is a Red one local to me, same owner since new (1990 registered), who I see regularly around (and speak to occasionally), still trying to get a drive in it.....

My wife and daughter went to Disney On Ice, so I went to the garage :)

I re-fitted the dash.

Wipers are on after a trip to the plumbing shop for a rubber washer.

I tested all of the dash illumination and warning light bulbs. One was blown, two were missing.
13765867_812225465544418_673100238611788

Then got the stalks and dash in place

One of the light switches looked a bit worrying. Fortunately the one from the GT was fine.
13667950_812226828877615_716932373478839

The dash surround needed some work, and some glue, to get the switches in place so while that was setting I fitted the front windows.

The brackets are solid but had surface rust, so I cleaned them up and painted them.

I really should re-fit the battery and start testing this stuff.
Still finding little things to sort out, like the curiously large number of holes leading from the scuttle tray to the cabin.

Also looking at the state of the seatbelts I'm thinking of binning them and buying brand new. Both for looks and safety.
The only think that might make it tricky is that the universal ones all have an eye for a bolt at the bottom, and the quattro ones loop around a metal slidey bar.

I have a feeling this will need to come off again at some point. but for now it's in place.

Pulled the carpets out for a look and they're worse than I realised. Apologies for the bad photo.

Going to get a local upholsterer to make me a new set.

I couldn't wait any longer to add this sticker :D

Got the seatbelts on Friday so I decided to fit them today. I had to cut new holes in the rear shelf so they'd work properly - wondering if the GT had different holes to the quattro. I binned my original parcel shelf as it had big oval speaker holes in it, and this one was in way better condition. I thought they were identical, but apparently not.

The rear belts it came with - one is a Volvo one but looks identical to the other which has a VAG part number.

I have working rear lights.
Brake lights, reverse, fogs and indicators don't appear to work though.

I don't know if this applies here, but some 1980s cars the brake lights only work when the ignition is on. (found that out when having a towbar installed and the brake lights didn't work although the tails, indicators and hazards all did)

You're probably right - I didn't have the keys in the garage with me and I was too lazy to go get them :D

Tried again with the keys in. I get more tail lights, indicators light up but don't flash, need to check the relay.
Reverse lights and brake lights need sorting out.

And now the fuel pump isn't working and I need to move the car in a few days for new insulation to go in under the house :D

Earthing continuity OK Rob?

Will check when I get time at the weekend. There's a mystery live and earth direct frrm the battery into the dash somewhere which is currently disconnected as I didn't like that!

And it could be the hazard switch. I have a spare so I'll try that.

Reverse light wire isn't connected to anything. I vaguely recall something falling off when i removed the carpet :D

Haven't even looked at the brake lights yet but it wouldn't surprise me if the switch is loose or disconnected.

Copy of possible comment ref crashworthiness of this car:-

I'm not suggesting doing this, but a mate of mine once head-butted the planet* at about 80mph in an Audi Coupe (same shell but FWD, no turbo). His worst injury was a minor cut where his glasses fell off.
The car was about 2 feet shorter, but the doors still opened and closed.

*Well a concrete bridge parapet with about 3 miles of earth behind it.
