Real world MPG for 1.6 diesel

Featured Replies

I am thinking of changing my Superb 1.8T petrol for a new Octavia 1.6 diesel DSG

What are owners getting on their MPG figures

Most of my miles are on the motorway

I have averaged 38.3 mpg on the Superb since I have had it in 55000 miles, quoted combined is 39.8

About 52 mpg since I got the car in March. Done 10000 miles mainly motorway.

Can get 60 short term but overall more like 52

1.6 diesel dsg

My manual 1.6 tdi is returning early to mid 60s on long runs, with a 80% motorway / 20% A road split.... Around town driving never goes below 50 mpg

Overall average is about 58 mpg (calculated on fill ups)

I would say at least high 50's into the 60's should be achieveable given your results from driving the petrol Superb.

I achieve average 52 in my 2L vRS TDI (98% motorway drinvg at 120kph) & can get high 50's on a gentle a-road run.

Check Fuelly.com (see my signiture) or other fuel tracking websites for real reviews of the Octavia 1.6TDi.

From the comments on here its seem most people are very happy with the car & its economy.

Perhaps also worth considering the 1.4TSi petrol too.

That delivers commendable performance for a small engine & almost diesel like fuel economy if driven correctly.

In 21,000 miles & almost 2 years of ownership, mine has consistently returned 55mpg over each full month of mixed driving, achieving low 60's on  trips of 60 miles plus each week. During that time, during which it has had 2 services, I've topped up the engine oil with minimal amounts, not even using up the full litre (supplied when new) yet.

To say I'm pleased & impressed is an understatement, not only with the consumption figures, but the whole car experience too.

My 2.0 has averaged 53mpg over 18.5k and I don't do anywhere near as many motorway miles as I used to. You should be able to beat that by at least ten percent in a 1.6 if not more.

24000 miles in and my 1.6 is averaging 57mpg. I have to say it has improved considerably since 15000 miles. I have noticed individual journeys giving 60 to 70 mpg on the trip computer (which is 2mpg optimistic compared to fuelly). The best thing is that the worst it returns on a full day of city traffic is 49mpg, it has never averaged lower than this.

Sounding pretty consistent. Our 1.6tdi manual does 55mpg on average. That is mostly town and country road driving.

Have seen it up in the 70's when on a run stuck behind Sunday drivers.

Just coming up to a month old and 1100 miles covered, long term  average is currently 53.4mpg according to trip computer.

I had the 1.6 in a Golf frock averaged low 50's

I now have the 2.0 in Octavia frock. Long term average is 59.4. Exactly the same drive as before. Enjoying the extra punch to!

Similar here, mine is a company car (none DSG) and have done 44000 miles now.  My long term average is 51mpg.  But bear in mind that I drive it hard so would guess that is the worse you're likely to see generally speaking.

When I do a steady run to scotland (over 70mph) I always see close to 70mpg.  It's really quite good on fuel.

Have a test drive on the motorway though as the cabin insulation is poor and motorway driving becomes tiring with the tyre noise.

My 2013 Octavia 1.6TDI DSG Elegance has covered 22K miles in just over two years. I found a big difference between driving in Sport "S", Normal "D", and Eco "E" modes.

I drive mainly in Eco mode and easily achieve 60mpg on a normal commute. When doing a longer drive and I'm not in a hurry using cruise control to maintain 60mph I easily get over 70mpg.

Eco mode has a few extra tricks to improve mpg such as if you lift your foot off the accelerator the car actually coasts instead of using engine braking force. If you are braking and lift your foot of the brake then normal engine braking occurs until you touch the accelerator again.

If you are in a hurry on the motorway and can maintain 80mph you can expect 55mph+ (again I mainly use cruise when safe to do so)

If its high MPG you're after then this is the right car choice! I've driven Honda and Toyota hybrids before and this Skoda with the 1.6TDI engine is much easier to get good results from.

Don't forget your first few thousand miles will not achieve this level of economy but it really starts to get good after about 5000 miles.

Anyone know the real-world emissions multiplication factor?

Just kidding :D

First long run out in my 2ltr diesel manual Octavia and  i got 77mpg on a 50 mile run of mainly dual carriageway. Better than I expected 1108436233_IMG_20181014_1918009172.thumb.jpg.b43ada3c49b4c51eb7777d3f76d41361.jpg

3,000 miles of data and my 2014 1.6 TDI averages 41.85mpg - based on miles from a brim to brim tank. That car is a lot of town driving, short runs and a few motorways.

8,500 miles of data and my 2016 2.0 TDI VRS  averages 45.4mpg - based on miles from a brim to brim tank. That car is a lot of motorways and very little town driving or short runs.

I know I could do better with this car, but it doesn't have kid seats in and I almost always get to drive it alone, which means I have a bit more fun than I maybe should. The 40kg of kit that's usually in the boot doesn't help either.

3k miles of driving in my 2ltr manual diesel and I am averaging 66 mpg, mainly motorway miles, but still very happy.

Got 80mpg average on 112 miles trip the other day. That was half motorway and half fast A-roads.

I would commit sewageside (the dirty way out) if half motorway & half fast A road driving gave that as an average speed.

That what happens when you hit the M6 on a bank holiday weekend, it was tedious!

To be fair it was just the two 2 sections of traffic that I hit in the M6 that were tedious, and brought the average speed down. Those aside I was doing 70 mph on the M6 and 55-60 mph on the A Roads, wasn't even checking the mpg film I got home so was very surprised, I think the 30 degree heat helped though, and I didn't have any passengers as usually I get lower 70's in a run with the family on board.

I achieved 70mpg with a 5 people and a boot full of camping gear on a 300 mile trip to Cornwall recently, mainly on cruise control at 75mph with a couple of slower roadwork 50 sections on the M6, still very impressed, again that's the 2 litre diesel manual.

I've got a 18 plate 1.6 dsg. Just passed 50k miles and I get on average 53mpg. Mostly driven in normal but a bit hard I.e. 80mph+ on motorways.

I find the mpg is poor on short journeys and only over get 60mpg+ crawling along on flat roads under 60mph.

I swear skoda have changed my settings during a service, since the mpg scandal. Car used to tell me 70mpg+ all the time but only see that in the first couple of mins from starting off if it is all downhill.

Given up looking at the mpg now. I just work on principle I can do 575mile s to tank in summer and 500 in winter

I've monitored the Fuel economy on my 2013 1.6CR manual 5 speed estate since I got it earlier this year. Without delving into figures too much, from my 160 mile commute each day I am consistently seeing between 620 and 650miles per tankful.

The MFD. (Yes I know you shouldn't take it as Gospel) regularly reads Mid 70s, with an all time best of 84.5mpg on a long 55mph stint on the M4.

Very impressed.

Really good results and further confirmation that diesels do love a long steady run.

Although I enjoy a long drive, I could not imagine doing a daily 160 mile commute, I hope that figure is the round trip total

@GordoGT

Is your car running the Factory Engine Management from 2013, so Defeat Device as a no cost option from Skoda or has it had the Emissions Fix to put on the new engine management and fit a Flow Device?

Edited by e-Roottoot

My 2.0l TDi vRS regularly achieves 60mpg on a motorway cruise. Around town and more spirited B Roads its doing between 48 and 54mpg..

48000miles on its ticker currently.
