Stretched Tyres

Featured Replies

Why do people strech tyres on Rims, personally I don't like the look. I saw a lowered Corsa today and the tyres were stretched that much I was wondering how much grip the tyres actually have.  Perhaps I'm getting old but it's not for me,

Anyone run stretched tyres?

No it's dangerous, pathetic and it's just a 'scene thing to do'..

I've never got it, and as someone who's inextricably drawn towards kerbs, I find the idea of exposed rimmage quite nerve-wracking

Gaz

So they can fit heavy but aledgedly "kewel" over-width wheels.

So you know to keep away from their car in traffic, as they are probably uninsured as well as a boy racer with a poor handling car.

Followed a Fiesta ST (new type) with what looked like 8inch+ rims and 185 tyres... good way to ruin the car!

What the F are stretched tyres? Pics please I'm old never heard of this?

Saw a Touran running stretched tyres on banded steels, so stupid.

It apparently looks good.

But also helps the wheels fit under the arches when the cars lowered.

Called 'fitment' im told

Oh yeh! I've seen this before but assumed the wheels were meant to look like this. One hell of a blow out waiting to happen!!

Stretched giving a lower profile so you can lower your car even more.

I don't understand the craze combined with the rims running against the arches chewing each other to pieces - rusty knackered arches in seconds

Until you reach the point where you have to drive round obstructions in the road such as crisp packets.

Thatw when its been done **** tbh.

Air is the way to go really. Coilovers are a right pain if you wanna go that low. Unbearable to sit in too. Youd jar your neck and break your spine if you ran over a white line.

Just another way of making your car look good when you post pictures of it on the Internet. Even if you have made it drive like an utter dog.

Me, my car has wide wheels so I can have wide tyres, so I can have more grip.

HAHA! So true!

Im 22. So quite a few of my mates have cars lowered like this, promising handling benefits.

But too hard suspension isnt good for road use. And although it rolls alot, they have been surprised by what a normal car like a fabia can do with half decent tyred. It rolls, but its no slower than a civic that bounced across the road.

On these roads? They call bouncing up and down the road good handling? There are no benefits..

No no.

The drivers promise the handling benefits haha.

Ive been a few like that, and introduced a mate with a dropped on its backside civic to a nissan GTR. Pointed out how the suspension is firm, but relatively comfortable and takes up the bumps in its stride.

He was still having non of it...

He knows best..

Clearly! :giggle:

There's a lad I regularly see (always has his baseball cap at a jaunty angle) who has an A3 slammed on wide wheels with plenty of stretch.

I followed him the other week, he had four mates in the car which meant he had about 10mm of suspension travel left. So every time he went over any sort of bump the rear arches hit the wheels and rebounded. He couldn't do more than 20 mph and his car handled as well as an excited spaniel, bouncing around all over the place.

I must be so anticool that it makes me white hot.  With my Scout I used to do the reverse - let's call it "pinched".  By fitting wider and oversized tyres (for offroad tread) it gave me 10mm more ground clearance.  I too had "a little finger width" clearance (tyre shoulder to front wheel arch) but I never bottomed out once.  Even so I couldn't ever do more than 20 down College Street LE what with the speed bumps. ;)

One of the kids round our way has a sticker on the back of his car apologising for his slow driving due to the car being 'slammed'. I just don't know why they hang around ASDA car park which is full of speed humps.
