What feature on a modern car do you most dislike? & what is must have?

Featured Replies

I mean if you want to buy a new Euro 6 Emission car now,

what feature do you really not like or want but is getting harder to avoid from many manufacturers.

For me it is an Electric Handbrake.

I seriously dislike them and will not buy a car with one.

Must have from now on.

a heated drivers seat,

and it will also be a heated front screen.

DRLs, needless eye irritation.

Can't think of any 'must haves' just now, most 'toys' on 'high-spec' cars leave me rather underwhelmed.

As Wino says DRLs are the most pointless thing, with "cornering fog lights" as a close second.

Things I really want; "emissions controls" that know when they're being tested and throttle the engine to achieve a pass!

The thing I hate is Start/Stop technology, that you can't switch off permanently.

Must have cruise control :-)

The VW style electric handbrake with auto hold is an absolutely fantastic device to have. Adaptive cruise will be on my next list too.

Couple of hates

I'm with George on the Electric handbrakes and I'll add (poorly implemented) auto wipers.

I had auto wipers on a Clio which worked perfectly ok AND they still had the full manual options. SWMBO's BMW has auto wipers and they've taken away the intermittent wipe. So they're either Off, Auto, or On full time. And the Auto is bloody awful. so you end up flicking them off and on to get intermittent.

Must haves...not really all that new but Climate and Cruise are probably my only must haves.

I actively avoid gadgets in cars. It was one reason for choosing the the Accord. Despite being Japanese it's pleasingly missing the rash of 'features' that get thrown at cars now and is just well built.

In the future I'd probably like to have the collision avoidance radar/ radar cruise (S60) and HUD but most other things (especially touchscreens) leave me cold.

Hates...

The ****** useless auto intermittant wipers  Aarrghhhh!

Auto dipping interior mirror.

Electric handbrake.

Must haves...

Air Con

Cruise control (not adaptive.)

Spare wheel.

Manual Gearbox.

I can't get on with electronic handbrakes either and a must have would be P.A.S.   :sun:

Probably driver assistance features such as lane departure warnings, active cruise, city brake, self-steer, self-parking etc.

I may be in a minority but I feel these all detract from the driver paying attention to what he is actually doing – ie driving, and hence seem to actively discourage good driving practice and skills.  After all – if someone needs the above to cope with day-to-day driving then, to my mind, they should not be driving in the first place.

Unfortunately many now come as standard but would be turned off pretty quickly.

Stuff I want – simplicity, ease of use, driver involvement and heated seats!

Don't like the electric handbrake at all.

I guess if only one "must have" is allowed it would be abs.

DRL's, front fag lights, excessive kerb weight, emissions control bull****, climate control, electric handbrake, steering with no feel, oversized wheels, undersized engines that you have to keep on boost, anything with less than 4 cylinders, 6 speed boxes where the top gear is no higher than a normal 5th, massive roof pillars, huge body sizes for no real reason, seatbelt warning buzzers that go off when my bag's in the passenger seat, pointlessly complex electronics, random sensors that fail, engines that use oil.

Yes, I'd rather be driving a mk2 Polo thanks.

Most of that is why I have a Mk1 MX5...   it has absolutely none of them!

Hate: central locking that doesn't unlock all the doors with one press.

Must have: OBD2 app to over-ride the hate.

which I now have - Praise be!

Yep. Whoever decided that was a good default setting needs a slap.

Ok, I can't edit #3 any more, so second "must":-

Flick wipe (as well as intermittent and any "auto wipers" functionality if these are fitted)

Self parking waste of time and money to me,Must haves after having them for the first time heated seats how have I managed all these winters ,also anti dazzle r/v internal and wing mirror, sun roof, full size spare wheel, privacy glass, rear view camera ,oh and electronic adjusting seat.that it for now.

Hates:

Auto wipers: My dads Jetta had them, they were on all the time when there was only 1 droplet of water n the screen yet in a torrential downpour they were on one of the slowest settings.

DRLs: Pointless, looks like fog lights and what good do they actually do? Nothing.

Electric handbrake, as said before horrible things, and what do you do when the battery is flat?

The thousands of beeps you seam to get for free. You've left your lights on? BEEP! You've not got your seatbelt on? BEEP! You've left your door open on the motorway? BEEP! Yes, I know I have, if I don't know these things please shred my drivers licence.

Likes:

Heated windscreens: I have seen these in Fords and I would like one of these, the screen, not the Ford.

SD card slot in the radio, want to put your entire song collection on shuffle and leave it there until you sell your car? Why not?

Air con/Climate Control: The one good thing about my old Peugeot and I wish mine had it.

Remote central locking: Underrated.

Thumbs down:

Electric handbrake (still don't trust them)

Thumbs up:

DAB radio (for Radio 4 Extra)

Hates, overly complex electrical systems, lane assist, electronic hand brakes, DRL's DSG gearbox.

Must haves, steering wheel and three pedals.

You'll not be moving very far with a flat battery anyway! ;-)

Just out of interest though, how many of the people who have said they wouldn't like an electric brake have actually had one and what's happened to cause such anti feeling?

Not Chavistic enough.

& a PITA in Winter.

Personally like DRL's myself, although looks like I am in the minority.

I am not on about the fancy looking 'fairy light' style ones, but normal practical ones that help prevent other drivers pulling out right in front of you.

Have them (switchable) on my A4 and I do think they make other drivers think twice about pulling out in front of you, by which time it is too late for them to do this.

I also think they are good in the rain. I use my headlights in the rain, as you should, but how many drivers do you see without any lights on at all and you can hardly see them coming up behind you, for instance, and that is if you are a very alert driver. How many accidents does this cause?

Or change the law regarding using lights in any wet / dull weather. At the moment it is about the only thing that is left to the drivers discretion as to visibility, and most people seem not to bother with them at all.

Unless the law has changed since last I checked.

Must have : - Steering Wheel, Lol.

Don't like the electric handbrake at all.

Sit ups, or a rowing machine work great for abs. Lol.

After getting a car with adaptive CC, I would say it has become a must have for me. I simply love it!

Why don't I like daytime running lights? Quite simple. If I'm on my scooter, I have my headlight on to help me be seen on a small, vulnerable, vehicle. Not seeing a scooter is a lot easier than not seeing a car. If all the cars have their headlights on, I just disappear again.

Less of an issue these days given LED lightbars, but I was taught to drive by a retired copper. He said in the daytime, he found headlights to be more effective than blues, so again, a vehicle that's got a need to stand out, does.

Also, don't get me started on all the numpties using them at night (no taillights, nearly scored one of them on the A1 the other night), in the rain, or a light mist, or any other situation where they just glare, or if you've got astigmatism, make streaks and halos.

Driven loads of cars with them, nope, sorry, don't like them at all, especcially VAG and Merc ones that are in stupid places, at least Vauxhall put them where your hand naturally goes for the lever.

And what am I going to do if the battery goes flat, I haven't got a pair of jump leads, but there's a couple of mates nearby. Well in the old days, I'd give it a push start (or if it's a mk2 polo, do it by myself). Try doing that with the handbrake on.

I was also once witness to a parked insignia deciding to suddenly run away downhill at a compound. That diminished all faith I have in electric handbrakes.
