12 v outlet fuse

Featured Replies

My 12v outlet ( cigerret charger) fuse keeps blowing. I have had the unit replaced by a Skoda dealer last year and this solved the problem for about 6 months .Recently the fuse is blowing for no reason and with no real pattern , I have been using the same usb charger and satnav plug since the unit has been replaced . any thoughts and ideas welcome. Car is 2012 1.2 Monte Carlo.

Fault on the charger? Fuses can get stressed over time so maybe it's to do with in-rush current (when item is first plugged in) or similar?

I would suggest an ammeter but it's probably too slow to see the problem as I doubt your chargers are pulling ~15A continuously.

I suppose the other cause could be a chafed wire causing an intermittent short to ground.

I was having this problem from time to time & i have come to the conclusion it was a cheapo phone charger unit as now I've swapped to the real McCoy - no more problems.

But I believe the real cause is the antiquated design of the plug & socket, which is no longer required in its current format to fulfil its original purpose ie power a cigarette lighter. I would have thought by now a much sleeker, lower profile, fit for purpose plug & socket would have been designed. Previously (using the cheapo referred to above) the fuse retaining ring has come loose & fallen into the socket shorting the live to ground.

Thanks, I do have to wonder if it is the USB charger I bought will keep a eye on it and post back replaced fuse yesterday and used satnav for over a hour with no problems.
