1.8T in fabia

Featured Replies

hey so a few weeks ago i asked you what best i could do to my 1.2 fabia and many just said to swap the engine or buy a newer car.  I have found an octavia vrs 2003 model 1.8T with 150,000miles on it.

on the other hand my fabia is a 2006 model mk1 1.2 with 30,000miles.

I would like to swap.

I would also need to buy a new radiator and intercooler cause the ones in the octavia are busted.

Any help anyone? cost wise? has anyone here actually done it? (probably will need to disassamble and clean the engine due to all that mileage)

You would be better off finding a 1.8T Ibiza as the swap would be somewhat more easier for you. Look at Trev and Pips thread projects as they have done something similar already. As have a few others I cannot remember off hand now.

I'd imagine there would be quite a lot of customization needed to get it to fit? Anything is possible but if your paying someone else to do it rather than doing it yourself I can't see it being that cheap!

Engine is straight swap providing you fit BJX mounts, you'll need a lot of other parts from elsewhere though

PM Tech1e - there is very little Ross hasn't done on a Mk I Fabia. He does or did do this sort of thing for a living so he can probably tell you how much it would cost to do it, potentially he could even do it for you.

Given that the engine has 150,000 on you'd probably want to rebuild it before putting it in to your car, along with the turbo, engines just like body work, suspension etc wear with age. I'd say find another donor - a Seat Ibiza (cheaper than the Polo, and probably readily available from Spain for you?) or VW Polo 1.8T would be the better choice as so many common parts, that if you were to source separately would certainly add a lot of time and cost to your build, would come with your donor (engine mounts, radiator, pipes, drive shafts etc.etc.).

As for paying someone to do it - The bill would be 1000s. There are a lot of man hours involved, to pay a company to carry out the conversion would be prohibitively expensive to the point where you really would be mad not to sit down and consider what that sum could get you from the showroom!

If you're planning to DIY it I'd say find an Ibiza donor and go for it! Several have been done and documented to varying degrees. Myself, Phil (pip) and Trevor have gone down this route and have threads in the project section. Ben did his based on an Octavia donor, but I believe his engine had considerably less miles than your proposed Octavia donor car.
