Another vRS question

Featured Replies

Whilst waiting for my car I have been pondering a few things.

Firstly, my car will have three maps loaded, Eco, Normal and vRS.  How many of you switch between the three.  I am thinking normal for town driving, Eco for motorway slogs and vRs for the open road.

What difference to fuel do they all make?  It's a DSG petrol estate.

More questions may follow

Mine is in Sport (vRS) mode all the time. All the modes really do is dull or sharpen throttle response, something you can do with your foot. Switching between modes in the hope it'll change the car form hyper miling superstar into a track animal is nothing other than a pipe dream.

As above, mine stays in sport as I think it suits the engine better and never noticed any difference in fuel consumption.

There's also an "individual" setting where you can mix and match. I'm in individual all the time with engine = eco. steering = sport( less turn of steering wheel). Headlights = sport. If you want sport, for any reason on dsg its only a flix back on the stick to overtake, going into bends etc. It also stops the clutch from entering free wheeling mode if you lift off the throttle in a bend for whatever reason. Then flick back again to eco or what the Setting is you have in individual. When you get the car, you'll get the hang of it, after all real men don't read instructions, they just fiddle. Suspect women do that also.

Why did you buy a vRS and keep the engine in Eco mode??

Eco is the quietest setting for the bloody sound attenuator or WTF it's called.

MrAdamwood. So I can use the S mode on the stick, otherwise there's no point it being there. And similar to the man with... says, it also stops people saying look at that idiot revving the ti*S off a new car when there's no need. Acceleration is probably much the Same in real world driving without being a Pratt.

Individual mode most of the time. Engine - normal mode;  Steering, ACC, lights, differential etc - sport mode; sound generator - eco mode. First thing I do when I start it up is turn off the auto engine stop/start.

Want to overtake or move it - drop a couple of gears on the flappy paddles and bounce on the devil or tap the gear selector back once to go from normal "D" drive mode to "S" sports - sweet.

Don't think I've ever used Eco yet. Then again have not been on a long distance motorway trip yet.

The manual seems to suggest that if the driving mode is set to Eco or engine Eco in individual, that S mode is overridden?

Nope, not on mine

I've set an individual mode for my daily commute:

Drive mode: Eco - Allows the DSG to coast and stops me flooring it from one set of lights to the next
Sound: Eco - The vroom is nice on country roads at the weekend, not while commuting

Steering: Sport

Lights: Normal

As said above, if I need to be nimble I just tap the stick backwards and the gearbox changes to sport mode.

Experimented on a trip out this morning. When I got the car in May 14. The sound generator kicked in anytime I went to sport.Noticed today it only comes on if sport is selected as a preference on the screen, not if I pull back on the stick S. I thought I'd just got used to it. Suspect this may have been changed at it's service on some upgrade.

The problem with sport is the constant revving of the engine

Mine switches between eco and individual.

Mostly in eco as I spend most of mine time in traffic.

Correct me If I'm wrong (stands back) but aren't the two sport modes different?

If you pull the stick back it puts the DSG in sport mode (shifting at higher revs)

If you select "sport" drive mode on the info it adjusts all the other things, sound, steering, lights but mainly changes the throttle response (sensitivity).

AFAIK the two are not linked in any way. (other than eco allows the box to freewheel) at least that is the way it seems on mine?

.

That's what I was trying to say earlier from the manual!

Yes S mode on the DSG just alters the shift points...so you can drive round in Sport mode on the drive selection mode and benefiting from sharper initial throttle response but still have regular D mode shift points.

We don't have any mode selection (yet) 'cos all our cars are too old, but it does seem that you have too much choice in the MQB platform cars.

As for shifting, we leave the DSG's alone most of the time, but use the paddles when appropriate & "S" mode when more engine braking is required.

Not so keen to use "S" when accelerating, spinning around to 6.5K rpm is a bit too much noise, & also past the 6K redline on the EOS as well.

I noticed that in "S" today the sound generator was on. Hasn't been recently. Thought what has changed ? Remembered I'd put steering and headlights on the individual setting that I use into sport. Just need to experiment and see which of these 2 switches it on/off. Maybe tomorrow

Mine has an option to change the volume of the sound generator on the individual setting

The sound option must be a later addition, mines May 14. Given up trying to work out if the sound generator is operated from within the other functions. Sometimes I think it is, then not sure. Getting paranoid.....

It is...only came in for MY16 and the introduction of MIB2 infotainment systems.

Basically 3 settings..

eco makes no noise, normal makes some noise ans sport supposedly puts the thing on full intensity though I am sure if you put the car physically in sport it is a touch louder still.

You'll probably find on yours that Sport is loud, Normal makes a bit of noise and Eco makes none....however if you set up Individual mode the amount of soundaktor noise will be linked to the throttle mode you select....so only way you can shut it off fully without pulling the plug on it or coding it out with VCDS is to run around in Eco all the while.

I really like the noise the soundaktor noise makes when in the mood but it can be a bit wearing on a regular drive.....its also started to make my dash rattle (Golf GTD) which is a bit annoying though gather a fairly common complaint.

Car is sooo much quieter with it switched off. Massive oversight on their part not to offer a volume setting for the soundaktor from the offset!

I am now running with sport throttle and eco soundaktor which is interesting...all the go and none of the theatre the soundaktor provides....a bit odd but satisfying too.

Ta for that, I have always been in individual with eco as I like the coasting function, but it gives me the excuse to use the S on the stick if I need engine braking or the paddles going down a bank with a speed restriction on it. So much choice, I'll never get bored.

My individual mode is set up exactly as Sport but without the noise. Generally, I just switch between the two depending on mood...

Hmmmm.  Looks like I will be doing lots of fiddling around with settings when the car arrives.  Thanks for all the replies.
