Solutions for road/tyre noise.

Featured Replies

What I think really would improve sound isolation are some extra door rubber seals, p- or z-shape applied to the inside of the doors outer edges.

As found on a bit more expensive cars ;)

It certainly would keep the sills cleaner.

Always wondered how effective the outer door seals would be, if the dust can get in so can the road noise. Are they another corner cut by Skoda only time will tell. Joe

Just an update on what I decided to do with my tyre issue.

After much research and deliberation, the car is now shod with a set of Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance tyres, size 215-45 R16, 86 H.

I have only driven the car a very short distance from the tyre fitting garage, in heavy rain, so not yet evaluated these new tyres.

At a later date, some sound deadening material will be put in the car to further reduce the noise level.

On the down side, I now have sitting in my garage and taking up space, a set of as new Bridgestone Turanza tyres. I guess E-bay here I come !

Thank you for all the replies, it was much appreciated.

will you let us know how it sounds ,  mine turanzas are driving me mad !

i too have Turanzas - I cannot compare yet until I get new tyres but I do notice the road noise a lot.

The Turanzas drive me mad, they are so harsh on the road, had the Conti's on my mk2 and they were a lot quieter but they wore quickly.

Think I may change to Michelin PS3s when it's time to change the tyres....

after researching the goodyear EGP  in 16 inch ,  im going to order them and keep the turanzas for when i sell or trade the car.

i just cant deal with the motorway roar from these things .

I have now driven the car a few more miles and I must say that the Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance tyres, have lowered the noise level to what I consider to be acceptable.

However, I will still be adding some sound deadening material to the car at a later date, ie., springtime !

The ride comfort has also improved by effectively making the suspension feel softer and thereby absorbs the small poor road surface bumps found on urban streets.

I have read a report that this tyre is now a standard factory fitment on the Audi Q3 and Range Rover Evoque, with particular claims in helping reduce noise levels in SUV 4x4 cars.

The tyre also performed well in wet weather grip tests, I believe that this is the correct tyre for me !

I did take my car back to the supplying Skoda dealer to evaluate the tyre noise with the Turanza tyres and to be fair, they did compare my car to two other Fabia`s and commented that one of them fitted with Dunlop tyres was a little quieter.

Clearly, my Turanza`s could not be replaced under warranty, I never expected this.

Here is the BUT, as a goodwill gesture the dealer agreed to replace all four tyres of my choice and cover the cost of two of them and I paid for the other two.

The dealer also agreed to price match any online fitted price that I could find.

I also kept the original Turanza tyres.

As you can imagine, I am more than satisfied and very happy with this result.

The dealer was Sandicliffe Skoda in Leicester and I would like to thank Colin and Mark in the car sales dept. for making this happen.

It is all too easy to bad mouth main dealers but in my case, I believe a little praise and thanks is due.

A Very Happy Christmas to you all.

i replaced mine with the EGP'S  mainly due to your post , i did my research and this tyre is getting top notch ratings for grip and noise .

i just bought them, no dealer involved , i will put the tuarnzas back on when im trading it in .

so will be taking a motorway trip soon and will know for sure ,  but so far it feels more comfy and is def quieter under 50 kmh .

thanks for the post ,  i knew nothing about these tyres until now.

I wonder if the problems with tyre noise and ride comfort mainly affects Fabias fitted with 16" wheels. Has anyone compared a Fabia fitted with 16" wheels with one on 15" wheels?

From what I've read, the 15" cars are at least 2 tyre sizes narrower, so I'd expect them to be quieter on a given tyre from that alone.

15 inch would def be quieter ,  i had planned on getting quiet all seasons on 15 inch wheels but the sizes either dont exist or are waaayy to expensive

so the G/Y EGP is a close and cheaper compromise.for the 16 inch .

tyre choice seems very important for this car as it is not the most sound proof car,   the turanzas are like riding around on stage coach wheels

in terms of harsh ride and noise -  i like my comfort and i dont want to be deafened.

the dealer said the 17 inchers were also harsh

Edited by dadumtish

ok, so motorway was good,  alot quieter

they still roar on very rough areas ,  some motorways have aggressive surfaces,  but not as bad as the bridgstones.

smooth tarmac areas were silent ,  medium areas were very acceptable .

the car feels more planted , and the steering is a little duller

but im happy , feels and sounds alot better.

if you need comfort go for these ,

if you need sport and snap,   i would stay away .

I found the road noise far too high at first (16" wheels) but I found that reducing the tyre pressures which were set at 37 psi to 30 psi has eliminated this problem completely. I am still finding the ride a bit harsh at times though and I wonder if changing tyres will help - Michelin seems to have a good reputation in this respect.

Given all this concerning tires and wheels I am highly torn between 15 and 16 inch summer wheels. Currently got Winther tires on 15" steel rims and will have to buy new rims for summer. But what's preferable? Seems there are so many pros and cons to weigh in! 16 looks better, maybe drives a little better but are they worth the price (tire selection of 16 is much smaller than 15!)?

I had a quick look at the noise level of different tyres, all in 215/45 R16 86H, which are recommended for the Fabia 110 TSI 16" wheels.

Seems like most, including the OEM Turanzas has a level at about 71-72 dB.

Only lower tyres found was Dunlop SP sportmax at 68 dB and two Goodyear tyres, Efficient Grip Performance and Exellence, both at 67 dB.

Which is a significally lower noise level than the 71-72 dB tyres.

I think that I mentioned it in another thread, but either way, I find on my wife's new Polo 1.2TSI 110, that the 16" summer wheels with Conti tyres are no noisier or uncomfortable than the 15" winter wheels with Michelin Alipins.   This is completely different from her previous 2003MY Polo which was a bit rough with its 15" summer wheels Michelin Exaltos on, and lots better when it had its 14" winter wheels and Michelin Alpins on.

Noted your interesting comment about road noise.

I have a new Skoda Karoq (330miles) and have been unhappy about a noise "resonance" at low speeds particularly on rough roads in our area.

Yesterday, I took the car to our dealer and went for a short test drive and the dealer said he couldn't hear any particularly unusual noise! (Wouldn't really expect a different response).

We did discuss tyres and he confirmed that the Turanza T001 tyre does have a high DB rating which could be part of the problem as, apparently, a small difference in the DB rating can create a big difference in the noise levels All the cars currently in the showroom seem to be fitted with the same tyres!

It helps if one turns up the radio/ music but one really shouldn't have to do this.

I am currently thinking about fitting an acoustic kit which the dealer can arrange to have fitted FOC.

Guess I am stuck as no way I am going to fork out for different tyres at this stage.

Interested to know if anyone has fitted an acoustic package or has similar problems with a Skoda, which I think is , otherwise, a nice car with a good spec.

Tyres make a huge difference to noise.

My fabia came with the Turanza T001s, they were fairly noisy. Lasted approx 30k miles.

Next pair that went on were two Falkens, these were a little quieter. They didn't last very long though, about 15k miles.

Following that were Davanti DX390's, these were similar in terms of noise, though i wouldn't recommend these at all, one was ~2mm out of round, and caused a vibraion that started at about 80mph and got worse the faster you went after that. One eventually had a sidewall blow out after a couple of quite harsh potholes! (they seemed quite stiff sidwalled), the davanti's had done 15k miles and were only down to 6mm from 8mm new though, so i guess they'll last a while if you only do city driving.

I'm now on a pair of Avon ZV7's, so far they're the quietest tyre i've ran on this car. I also immediately noticed a huge improvement in cornering grip, a corner where i could feel the tyres just starting to chew at 70, i now went round at 75 with the rear now feeling like it wanted to step out (still got davanti's on the rear 😕 ) I've only had these on for about 2.5k miles now so can't comment on lifespan.

Avon ZV7 215-45-R16, cost me about £90 per corner, you can probably find other cheaper places to grab them.

Not sure what wheel and tyres the Karoq takes, but it's worth a consideration.

Been looking at some Avon zv7's to replace my rear ones. The Dunlop sportmax on the rear were reported as being stepped at last mot and hoping it cures the wum-wum-wum type roaring I get from the rear on smooth tarmac!

The Davanti's I had seemed very durable, though fairly loud, and not the best for cornering grip. They were starting to become very slightly stepped before the following pothole destroyed one;

Ouch, had that happen on my vrs at about 50 on a corner on a country road, somehow managed to keep it going straight and pulled into a turning. Sidewall had blown out.

Will probably get the Avon's fitted on the rear after I've been paid... National just around the corner sell them about 5-10 less per corner than black circles and they've treated me well in there over the years.

I've had a sidewall blow out from a pothole, was a habilead budget rubbish thing. I braked and that wheel instantly locked up and before ABS could do anything about it i was heading straight towards another car. 60mph head on. thankfully the remaining bridgestone on the right gripped well enough to pull back to the correct side of the road. almost needed much more than a new pair of trousers!

In other news, i've just grabbed a full set of 17 inch rims, complete with tyres! The rims are from a Rapid, but are same offset pcd bore etc as the 17 inch ones on the Fabia (17", ET46, 7J, 5x100, 57.1 CB.

They come with Dunlop SP Sport Maxx's.

These are what i bought;

If anyone wishes to buy a set of 16 inch alloys (1 is perfect, 3 need repainting) and pretty much brand new tyres (3 Avon ZV7's and 1x Davanti DX390). Let me know. I can work a deal :)

So I had the rears replaced with Avon ZV7's. So far, much quieter and the wum-wum type roaring has gone away at 30-40 MPH. Unfortunately the fitter has scratched one of my alloys in two places removing the wheel weights which I've put a complaint in about 😡 But happy with the tyres. They commented that all VAG group cars tend to deform on the rears, nothing they can do as its a fixed axle but also agreed that they see a fair amount of Dunlops with the same issue... will stay away in the future.

The Dunlops on my new wheels aren't super quiet. At low speeds there's a wumming kind of noise but soon as i speed up above 15mph it clears off.

Just need them to last till around summer time ish then i can get a set of Avon ZV7's or Michelin PS4 on there. They've got 6mm on front and 7mm on rear. The fronts look like they've been working hard though!

Are they denying they damaged the alloys?
