VW Emissions Scandal Thread V2

Featured Replies

So the VW Scandal continues in the EU/UK where vehicles are not yet getting 'The Fix', no appointments are made for

vehicles to get 'The Fix'.

VW Group Sales in the EU / UK doing all right, reportedly Used Car values no worse for depreciation than they were in 2015.

The money lost is by Financial Institutions, Governments and the Public's Pension Funds and Investments etc.

The VW Group just gets on with not getting on with doing any Software or Hardware changes to the affected vehicles other

than maybe in the United States of America and Australia / New Zealand.

Working out well for the Volkswagen Group so far it seams.

If people were really smart they'd ban big cities. They're the cause of all these problems.

Good. Unless vw give me my £350 for remap bk I wont be having the so called fix

Why would you want the VW Fix or any money from the VWG when you have a Remap so must be happy with how you modified your cars running already?

We will be getting our electric vans for LHR later in the year as part of what was called the Boris cars, which he failed to actually get under way, a hallmark of the Conservative reign, but it will finally happen in the next few months cutting the air pollution we do at Heathrow.

I wonder how reducing pollution and particulates by using electric vehicles, compares to planes taking off, landing and taxiing about? You see loads of big fuel tankers and all that aviation fuel has to go somewhere. I think their mentality is it works for motor vehicles in congested London, so we'll try it at LHR and ignore what comes out of the planes and the indirect pollution from operating the terminal site. When I pick up my Yeti from a LHR open long stay car parks, I can see the particulate pollution all over the car. Electric vehicles on site won't stop that.

True, but 'Big Brother' who sent your ownership details to VW want to see a green tick in the box. Don't worry, they'll probably have a box on the form labeled 'exemption' for remapped vehicles, just so they know how many are out there and can set a special VED rate, ban your car or send on information to your insurers. :sun:

I hear a lot of talk about tax going up and problems potentially with mot. Ye I love how the car runs and drives

As I cant afford to change it I worry abt what the consequences could be

It would be interesting to hear how it could be a problem with a UK MOT. Other than if it has a DPF delete or they clamp down on remapped Euro 5 diesels since all VW are doing is a Authorites Approved remap and after market modifications if they get approved. Sauce for Goose and all that.

What talk about tax going up and mot issues?  They don't retest the cars for CO2 emissions so once the car has its rate decided, that's it and government has confirmed there will be no VED changes as a result of the VW emissions issue.  Similarly they don't test cars for Nox emissions either, just a basic smoke test.  If they were testing the Nox emissions to within the EU certification, most cars would fail outright as while other companies may not be using explicit defeat devices there's clearly excessive bending of the rules to get their high mpg, low co2, low nox emissions etc.

^ Every (UK) owner of an affected vehicle should listen to this, he's right.

Looks like an inevitable barney next year between the legislators and the manufacturers over 'real world' emissions standards of the future because it's becoming obvious that no one is close to being legit on road at all temps.

The U.K. govt seems to be on the driverless AND electric car path.

The Queen's speech was the biggest load of toshful, wishful thinking that has probably ever been touted in parliament.

It is companies and individuals that will push forward the improvement in air quality agenda through their desire.

The 2016 Queen's speech can only be taken on the previous 5 where the Coalition and pure Con government has just about failed on every aspiration and target they have mentioned.

Some rules do help ie nice to get a £4..5K contribution to a lecy vehicle, thought it was £5K a few years ago.

We, companies like mine, individual like me, will move to low air pollution vehicles despite the economic policy of Laissez Faire the Current UK government have due to conscious and concern, and hopefully action by the London Mayor rather than the inaction of the out-going Eton Mess.

I think that's because there's a hidden Agenda and a Trojan Horse. As we get more and more cars they don't want the huge expense of building more roads. Driverless cars give opportunities for road use charging by electronic means and you can get more cars along the highway running bumper to bumper at speeds big brother can control. That ensures loads of self interest minority groups are kept happy, except car buyers who will be paying for it. If you think 'driverless' means only local control of your car, think outside the box at what else it offers which may not be in drivers interests or their freedom to drive where they want. As they say, the devil is in the detail.

The Introduction of a Phone App that has your driving licence opens up the opportunity for the Road Use Charging,

as it can help with Parking Charges & even tracking Average Speeds etc.

All good stuff until compulsory on the vehicle for road side monitoring.

But to save on have to have chips in vehicles or in phones it might as well be inserted into people as they reach School Age and as they come into the country from abroad.

Chips in Dogs are now compulsory in the UK,

coming soon to a flesh area in UK Citizens and Migrants soon.

Putting chips in humans and newborns will require another discussion thread!

The Introduction of a Phone App

It won't do me any good because my mobile is never switched on 24./7, It's not a personal data leaking/tracking Apple or Google smartphone and would not work on my old Nokia phone which never hangs, gets spyware, nags with ads and has a 1 month battery life off charge.

Crowd-sourcing is the way forward with fuel consumption measurement. Fuelly and/or Spritmonitor are a much, much better way of finding out true economy figures.  Hopefully they have measures in place to prevent manufacturers polluting the data pools on those sites by adding spurious info to distort things in their favour.

I guess they would start by merely giving an indicative figure subject to real world responses in the case of new models........their CO2 figures are going to be interesting also.

'Real World' is the problem for something like a modern car that doesn't run under constant reproduceable 'laboratory' conditions when driven. The real world driving situation is very difficult to define with so many variables and definition is the only thing that stands in advertising or legal claims.

The problem with the emissions scandal goes back to the qualifying tests which are too far away from how cars are actually driven. Manufacturers had so much influence over agreeing the tests they have no credibility. Whatever you try to define, somebody will always come up with a driving style or type of road that doesn't fit. E.g. if I tried to make an emission or consumption definition for constant 70 mph motorway driving, that would fail due to many real world factors including road gradients, wind, temperature, barometric pressure vehicle weight etc.

Here's an idea:  All new cars have a sealed box like an electric meter which constantly measures emissions and fuel consumption. Every so often your vehicle usage data is securely accessed and uploaded. Then you are sent a bill for your emission load on the environment and a road tax charge based on what mileage you did and these affect your insurance quote.

The lawyers are licking their lips at the future prospects here in any case.

Either way they win.

The Chinese seem to be taking their airborne pollution problem seriously now

http://www.greencarreports.com/news/1104122_china-brings-its-fuel-quality-standards-up-to-global-levels-quickly

Much if my team work in China and it is the place most stuff is made in the world and the pollution has to be seen and tasted to be believed.

As in most thing, solar, wind and now vehicle emissions they will through manufacturing might like no other country can.

Started Changing my headlight bulbs to LEDs to save my battery and help with fuel consumption, looking at Lithium-ion battery reducing the bike and cars weight by several kilos.

I fear that plug n play with LED globes in the Pug will throw up too many messages for my liking.
