Merc have been quite open that some of their units that also appear in GM Models have software that reduces and completely defeats the emission system at certain temperatures.

 

But as the test is done at regulated temperatures they claim this system complies with all legislation even if they are dirtier than VW units on the road.

So the story is now that Audi developed the Software as far back as 17 years ago, and there it was just what VW needed for the Euro 5 Emissions in the US of A.

 

Only thing is, the Volkswagen Group needed it for VW, Audi, Porsche and also in Skoda & Seat around the world.

Reading todays stories you would think Audi is some distant relative of VW.

Sounds like Mitsubishi is line for huindreds of millions of dollars of fine as, like Hyundai-Kia, they have misled about their fuel consumption and therefore emission figures figures and hence their shares have taken a 15% hit.

 

Glad to say the Dacia is stunning me how economical it is showing about 60 mpg and 700 mile range from a 3 cylinder turbo-petrol.  Think the weather is helping and move to summer tyres. 

The BBC news seems to be saying that the issue is confined sales within Japan of some 600K cars.  Of these 470K were manufactured for Nissan who flagged the issue to Mitsubishi management!

Looks like they over inflated the tyres to improve the fuel consumption on the rolling road.  If this turns out to be the case then it must be that many employees, who conducted the tests, were involved in the fraudulent testing.  Who knows where all this is going to lead?

If their tests are anything like the EU Tests or the same, then not that many cars are tested, 

just a few examples to get the Approvals and results.

Selected Tests done In house or approved establishments and the Manufacturer presenting results.

 

Not that many need to be involved.

Like at many Tests as done on behalf of Manufacturers, kidology but in another language.

VW Managed to have Co2 Irregularities on Euro 6 Vehicles and get away lightly on that 

because the Media get it all mixed in with Defeat Device Cheats, 

lucky there for the VW Group.

As you say all the manufacturers are using the extreme limits of the testing spec conditions as well as striping out all kinds of items that add weight in normal running, taping up seams etc. I guess if government testing was to be introduced to reflect the real world then all of our modern cars would fail the specs of decades ago let alone today's or the proposed ones.

All cars (as far as I am aware) have a declared coefficient of drag (CD) which I guess involves a wind tunnel........without a number plate also (wiper blades etc?).

Then there are the economy tests done by outsiders who may resort to such tricks.........our pug 1.2 went 1800+kms on a 53L tank frinstance......I'll bet the tyres had plenty of air in them.

Lovely stuff, but the Volkswagen group have admitted to having vehicles cheat during the Smog Tests in the US.

The Co2 Irregularities had to be another form of dishonesty while testing for the EU Tests.

 

Manufactures results from testing on roads with cars at full / max loaded weights should be what matters, 

hypermiling vehicles as light as they can be is just really of little use to buyers of cars that want a bum on each seat and stuff in the boot 

or load area.

I suspect it's more about emissions comparison rather than emissions control, except in California which is the policeman-on-the-beat.

I suspect the Germans didn't understand that subtle difference.

You have to understand the rules to cheat them.

The Volkswagen Board have tried the not understanding line plenty, but they cheated and lied to be the worlds number one biggest car manufacturer for 6 months last year.

Perhaps cheaper to export (back in many cases) to Mexico and sell there under the NAFTA agreement, do not think Mexico will be quite so fussy although Mexico city can be pretty dirty for air quality like LA, London etc.

 

Swap for a petrol version might attract many and save VW a heap of money.

And all this as VW-Audi scrimped on a $100 or two dollars of production costs making a decent emission systems.

 

Looks like costing them one hundred times this cost per vehicle in the US as an outcome, not good economics.

 

Can completely understand PSAs and Renault smart move to sell everywhere in the world other than US. 

I've read that Peugeot are looking to return to the U.S. which, in itself, is a statement.

Is the Volkswagen Group Master Plan not to Introduce the Skoda Kodiaq to the North American & Canadian market?

A competitor to Honda & Subaru,  Hybrid and not German or Japanese.

 

Take Skoda to the masses as obviously it has nothing what so ever to do with Volkswagen and cheating and loss of reputation.

Skoda are a mystery name to Americans and it would cost a small fortune to establish it.

Have you noticed that is going to cost a very large fortune of borrowed money for the VW Group just to sort out this mess.

Then their Dealerships are pithed off with them, and many owners of their products.

 

As it is the VWG are likely to be writing off losses by Tax savings.

Profits down, pay less tax, cut the Unions powers, cut the wastage, cut Bosses bonuses, they still get bonuses though,

nobody yet serving jail sentences or assets seized. 

They will be spending a large fortune splitting up the Divisions of the Volkswagen Group as it is.

 

Spending a fortune on Media Advice and Advertising and still failing to win the Publics trust, 

because since September they have achieved nothing, 

no Fix Approved for North America, 

No Fix that works for the Rest of the World that has been approved.
