But not in England I guess. Not enough pressure put on them to bother with European cars.

Not even in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland all part of the British Isles that the DVSA and the UK Government have Responsibility for.

Anyhow seeing as the UK is part of the EU still the German Government can be trusted to see that all of Europe's Owners of Affected vehicles are treated fairly.

Lol. M of course the Germans can be trusted :-))

I did mean the UK in general not just England

Without wanting to be lynched for heresy, would someone be willing to tell me why motorists (affected or otherwise) are making such a big deal out of all this?? If they are, obviously.

Maybe because it's not often a major multinational gets caught out cheating to obtain U.S. market share with serious financial damage resulting.

And that's not even considering the customer's attitude to such behaviour.

It's a commercial Agatha Christie 'who dunnit'.

Are we so inured to such behaviour that it just passes as an everyday occurrence?.

Global carmakers face emissions questions as VW scandal deepens

The emissions scandal plaguing the car industry widened further on Friday as some of the world’s largest car makers recalled more than half a million vehicles while Volkswagen nearly tripled its provision for its costs from the affair to more than €16bn.  General Motors, Mercedes-Benz owner Daimler and VW will between them voluntarily recall 630,000 diesel cars across Europe for “irregularities” that caused their vehicles to emit far more poisonous nitrogen oxide than is legal. In its probe, Germany’s ministry of transport found that the Porsche, Audi and VW cars it tested contained the so-called defeat devices. VW on Friday faced mounting pressure to offer buybacks to European drivers after the UK government criticised it for the “compensation discrepancy” between Europe and the US, where it agreed on Thursday to buybacks as part of settlement with US regulators.  Opel and Mercedes vehicles did not contain illegal devices, but some had technology that switches off emissions treatment systems at certain temperatures, allowing them to emit more than is permitted in real world driving conditions, authorities said.  “We strongly believe that the industry has to regain trust by increasing the transparency with customers and authorities,” said Opel, which is owned by GM, in a statement following the recall.  The car makers have agreed to carry out a voluntary recall to service the vehicles with a software tweak. The KBA, a German authority responsible for traffic regulation, will then test the cars to make sure they are in compliance.  Daimler shares fell 7 per cent after it also opened an investigation in the US at the request of the US Department of Justice.Daimler, the owner of Mercedes-Benz, said that 247,000 cars would be recalled. It added: “All of our vehicles have been certified and licensed in accordance with the applicable legal requirements.”

The German tests echo those released by the UK government a day earlier, which showed that many of the top-selling diesel cars in Britain produced an average of six times as much nitrogen oxide when tested on the roads instead of in the laboratory.

Road tests reveal raised emissions of top-selling diesels

Thirty-seven of the best-selling diesel cars in the UK produced an average of six times as much nitrogen oxide when tested on the roads instead of in the laboratory.

One make of vehicle, the Range Rover Sport, emitted 1,700mg per kilometre of the gas when tested on the road, more than nine times the limit of 180 mg/km for diesels.  The government, which carried out the tests, attributed the discrepancy to the use of engine management systems designed to cut emissions. These systems typically stop functioning at low temperatures because in cold weather the engine could be damaged if they remain active. But in laboratory conditions most of the vehicles were within the legal boundaries. At present, manufacturers are only acting illegally if their cars breach emissions rules while in lab conditions.   The Vauxhall Insignia was measured even higher, at 1,800 mg/km, and the Volvo V40 produced more than 1,500 mg/km. On average, the 18 “Euro 5” generation cars — vehicles registered from January 2011 — produced emissions averaging 1,135 mg/km.

Ministers said they were disappointed by the findings. Patrick McLoughlin, transport secretary, said the government’s tests had found widespread use of such systems, which could lead to higher emissions in cooler, real-world conditions.  He called on the motor industry to work harder to restore public trust by being “transparent” about the systems they employed. Robert Goodwill, transport minister, admitted that manufacturers had been able to “game” the system.  The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said it was clear that the vehicles tested “met the legal standards with no new evidence that any other manufacturer has used any kind of lab cycle test-recognition technology”.  It added that differences “between the results from official laboratory tests and those performed in the ‘real world’ are well known, and industry acknowledges the need for fundamental reform of the current official test regime, which does it no favours”.The German carmaker is engulfed in the worst scandal in its 78-year history after it admitted to manipulating emissions test data on its diesel vehicles in the US and Europe. The deepening crisis has wiped billions of euros off the company’s shares and rocked the European car industry.  The tests were prompted after VW, Europe’s largest carmaker, was engulfed in scandal seven months ago after admitting that 11m cars were equipped with test-cheating software that could detect when they were being tested and therefore understate emissions levels.  The results of the government’s tests come on the day VW agreed a deal with US regulators to buy back 480,000 cars affected by the scandal in America.

The UK’s transport department examined a representative sample of the best-selling diesel vehicles in Britain. It said it had found no evidence of the type of “defeat devices” used by VW. But its findings will prompt further scrutiny of the failure of laboratory tests to pick up the true level of emissions.

But believed by many to be having massive consequences on health.  These diesel cars are the major contributor to the premature deaths of thousands of people in large urban areas like London are probably Birmingham, UK too.

What is incredible is how little action has been taken my governments to alleviate the situation.  We keep hoping, maybe by way of the mayoral elections in London in a couple of weeks, but then Zac's statement is a bit weak ie talking about 2030, by then there would have been more than 100K premature deaths in London along due to poor air quality but it looks like Sadiq Khan will win the London mayoral election and he has promised more action than Zac against diesels so that should improve London's air quality at a faster pace than the snail's pace at present.

If non compliant cars are forced to pay a high extra charge then this can go in to NOX and PM air scrubbers.

I'm not saying it's not a major problem though.

To the contrary, if it takes 10*c+ to 'activate' emissions systems, they don't have much of a future, once the voters understand that and they and the health professionals get on the pollies backs.

Indeed and to the credit of Renault they have been recalling their cars and resetting the EGR controller to recirculate at a lower temperature as they realised that the average temperatures in a coldish city like Paris is in the winter. In Paris, which is a single authority, Bollore has rolled out thousands of electric hire cars, in London it is much more difficult due to it being a fractured 40-odd authorities which is bad news for Londoner's health so more is needed to push the change to fuel cell buses, hybrid, petrol, all-electric vehicles to get the air quality back to legal limits.

The UK Transport Minister was in front of the Westminster Committee looking into the VW Group Fiasco,

they are not amused it appears on the Inaction of VW with 'the fix' and dealing with UK Owners,

and the Transport Minister being as much use as a Chocolate Fire guard.

The UK Government / TAX PAYER has much invested in the VW Group it seems.

Maybe even Elected Members personally have financial involvements.

I think you are being a little generous. Even a chocolate fire guard has aesthetic appeal in temperate conditions.

I was just asking, I'm not affected by it. only really stuck my beak into it just now and I didn't get what the butthurt was about.

The butthurt, as you so delicately put it, is because a hell of a lot of people have lost a hell of a lot of money because of the deviousness of the VW Group.

That loss will become evident at sale time when the friendly salesperson will take them to the cleaners

?

Are used 2009-2015 with the affected Euro 5 Diesel Engine 1.2, 1.6 & 2.0 VW's / Skoda / Audi and Seat an absolute steal as at Volkswagen Group main dealers yet.?

Have the trade guides put their Bottom Book prices through the floor yet?

Have many really lost a hell of a lot of money other than shareholders in VW.?

Lots of cars & light commercials are leased and those are on finance that comes from the Volkswagen Group, or vehicles owned by other financial institutions.

If an average drop of £1,600 more than the usual depreciation has happened then the Legal Sharks will

get all the data from the Auctions & the Leasing Companies.

What does amaze me is the Journalists and the Print & Online Media.

It is called the VW Emissions Scandal and it is the Volkswagen Group and mostly VW is mentioned, occasionally Skoda, Seat or Porsche.

But it really does VW favours to keep referring to only VW, and sometimes Audi.

http://telegraph.co.uk/business/2016/04/26/vw-emissions-scandal-whats-it-all-about

The Scandal began in the US, but it is a World Wide one now,

Lists and Brand Logos showing the Affected Brands, and lists including the Models from the 5 brands

are seldom that prominent.

The List of Vehicles affected in the EU including the UK would be good to be easily accessible would be nice.

(NOT FOR VW THOUGH.)
