Looks nice and clean. Get that tyre blown up though!

I can do better than that, it got replaced this morning  :p

I blew it up the day before and was soft again when i cleaned it yesterday, so blew it up this morning and went to the tyre place, bad news as it had a hole in the side wall

So was no going back, was just replaced, but well spotted

Looking mint mate, those SE do polish up lovely!

Thanks, Its currently in the for sale section  :p

Despite it going up for sale soon, the project must go on!

Since the weather was nice I decided to do the rear brakes, clean them all up, grease up the sliders and edges of the pads and paint the calipers since I did the fronts the other week, made the rears look poor!

Near side looked like this.

And painted (typically the rain started!) but will touch it up another day.

Got another clean and hoover out this morning before its MOT. Passed first time no issues with no advisories. Almost got a 13 month test on it now since I got it done early :)

Brakes are looking very nice, I need to re paint my rears but unsure weather to stay red or go for a different colour.

  • Author

Thanks, Im pleased with them!

The smooth red always comes out nice, suits the car i think. Not sure what other colour id go for apart from blue, and not sure how that will turn out!

Cannot believe what I have just read in the forsale section Hutchy !?

Cannot believe what I have just read in the forsale section Hutchy !?

I know  :peek:

Nothing is set in stone though, im pretty sure i'll regret it if it goes, but... im sure i'll be back or just keep it if i cant work out a deal for a MK2  :x

Thanks though

Dont need my car untill wednesday now so took the few days i've got to start doing the engine work.

First on the list is to clean the full intake side, i replaced and cleaned the airbox with a new Bosch air filter a few weeks back and cleaned the Turbo intake pipe at the same time, so now i just need to do the intercooler pipes, intercooler, EGR, ASV and inlet manifold. While i was working in the area id rather upgrade or replace what i can so bought the newer EGR gasket with the 9mm hole to stop the BLT hesitation alot of people suffer from.

So the gasket looks like this, 9mm hole in the middle but that brings up the EML light on the dash so to be extra sure i've drilled it out to 12mm.

image.jpg

This is it drilled out to 12mm, its still a big restriction beside the standard size gasket :D

image.jpg

So moving on i wipped the EGR and ASV out... Wow! i really didnt think they would be this bad!

image.jpg

image.jpg

image.jpg

And the EGR is much the same!

image.jpg

image.jpg

a very small amount of the dirt i removed....

image.jpg

So after removing what i could with my plastic trim remover tools i soaked them in part cleaner and used a brush to clean the rest up.

image.jpg

image.jpg

The egr valve got the same but ran out of time for today so left it for now, the thick of it is off but it still needs a good soak in part cleaner and a brush up before refitting.

image.jpg

How things looked when i left, cost nearly £35 just to replace the few gaskets when removing/cleaning the EGR and ASV alone! Each gasket is roughly £5 and it has 6 in total

image.jpg

I'll see how much time i've got or if the weather doesnt play ball, i might even polish the insides :D

I suppose if they go nice and smooth it will prevent build up again in the future

Edited by hutchysrs50

Wow, thats alot of build up. Apprently oven cleaner is good for cleaning out carbon! Im in the mind set to remove my egr completly now on my blt.

  • Author

I've got proper part cleaner that gets most of it off no problem really, just takes a little bit of time and elbow grease as well.

I wouldn't remove it all together, it does a good job and serves a purpose, id only remove it completely if i was chasing big power!

Mine was like that 4 years ago, I cleaned it in situ, should have removed it. Just used a screwdriver and scraped it out loads of black oily gunk.

Better than nothing but the worry with that is any loose bits will get sucked into the engine in chunks which isnt good!

Took me less than 15 minutes to strip it down, its a nice easy job even on the BLT engine with the EGR cooler at the back which gets in the way if you want to fit the reducer gasket like i have!

Finished cleaning the EGR and ASV out this afternoon.

I've got the engine pretty much stripped down now, timing belt off, rocker off and most the bolts slack ready to refit with the new camshaft tomorrow.

A quick visual inspection didn't show much but since I'm changing it anyway I didn't really take much notice or turn the cam over to check properly :D

Got another few hours today between the rain showers, got it all stripped down ready for the new parts to go on. I'm just waiting for the new camshaft bearings to get delivered since my order got messed up.

image.jpg

Looks like the camshaft has wear on a few lobes and some scoring so needs changing.

image.jpg

image.jpg

Nothing major on it but still not ideal!

How it's sitting without a camshaft

image.jpg

Here's the worst of it, tappet is quite worn so glad I'm doing this after all! It's got quite a dip in it and probably isn't far off rubbing through.

image.jpg

Pile of parts....

Bearings

image.jpg

Old / vs new camshaft. The old blacker one has worn on the edges, the points arnt as pointy and have started to spread out on the tips.

image.jpg

image.jpg

Will be starting putting it back together on Wednesday hopefully!

Gave my brother a lift putting an a3 back together after camshaft change, wasn't that bad a job. We were struggling for a torque wrench that did low enough nm though

Edited by FurbyJC

It's not a bad job, just doing it in stages while I can, done the same job plenty of times now anyway :)

I've got 3 torque wrenches and all new bolts so should be fine!

So a big update! While this car was off the road the want for a mk2 was too much so purchased a 2012 Fabia elegance, so this one is 100% up for grabs now!

On with the build anyway!

Here's the new updated tappets, they have a coating making them stronger so they don't wear down as easily as the old ones used to.

image.jpg

All fitted and coated with pre-start

image.jpg

With the new tappets in place the new bearings could be fitted

image.jpg

Camshaft fitted in place

image.jpg

Injector rocker arms fitted, cracked off the adjustment bolts for the Injecfors so can't be sure what the old injector lash degree value was but they have all been reset to 180° now.

New rocker cover gasket

image.jpg

And all fitted back in place

image.jpg

It's running spot on, just need to put some miles on it now to run the camshaft in. I'm looking farward to seing if it's any faster or different to drive with a new camshaft, EGR and ASV cleaned with reducer gasket, injector lash set up correctly and torsion value spot on.

Interesting, i need to do this on mine as the camshaft is pitted and worn. Awaiting for another 10k miles as the timing belt has just been done. Ive not done this before so might twist your ear nearer the time. What where the cost of the parts if you dont mind me asking?
