key fob battery

Featured Replies

had the SEL110 for 2 months now, loving it.

Today for the first time I had a "change key battery" warning come up on the dash. I wonder how this has happened. Haven't used it all that much!

A ) Will I really have to be changing it every 2 months?

B )  how do I open the fob to replace it? I am assuming flat disc battery?

If that's the standard amount of time for a battery then it's **** poor.

anyone else had it?

Had mine 6months use it for work so it's opened at least 30 times a day and no problem with key fob. Not took my key fob apart so can't help with that .

OK - first off - here's the definitive Youtube How-To video !!  Golf Mk7 - but the same fob.  Link

I've had mine for 5 months now - car has Full Kessy - don't know how that changes battery usage. But no battery change yet.

Battery is CR2025. Some talk on Octavia 3 forum of possibility of using 2032 - higher capacity. Slightly higher profile - but it seems it fits. ( Link )

Kessy Go will be the cause...every time you get in the car, start it and stop and exit the car, the ECU interacts with the key over RF as it does when you press the buttons but a fair bit more (like a 2/3 sec key press).

It kills the battery fairly quickly and is even worse with full kessy.

You can squeeze a CR2032 cell in which has more capacity and will last longer from what i am told

Well .. two months does seem a rather short life span though ?

Like I said - mine is Full Kessy - and just over 5 months with no probs so far.

But I will keep a spare battery in the car ! (And one in the house !!)

Tried popping the battery out the other night to see what happens with the ignition with no battery in the fob.

The book says to put top of the key (where the keyring goes) right up against the Start-Stop button - engine starts then OK  - but when you move key away - MFD flashes up a "Key not detected/not found" types of messages - engine keeps running though.

Just checked - have some 2032s in my battery stock here - came from LIDL - handy as spares. 6 in a pack !  Exxxcellent !

I have not had a “Change Key Battery” message but I have had an intermittent problem with the message “Key not Found”

while driving and a chime that then alerts me every 30 seconds.

Claybanks (now Lookers) have had the car in on a number of occasions but have not found any reason for this to occur.

I think their difficulty is that the problem is very intermittent and they have not been able to replicate this in the workshop.

They have said that if the message comes up while driving the engine will not cut out which is reassuring

The only way to stop the message is to stop the car and then restart it by holding the key against the start button.

I would add that they have replaced the battery in each of the keys but this has not solved the problem

I know it's intermittent .... but does it throw up that message with the second key too ?

Really interested in understanding the workings of this "new stuff".

Hi Dithane

Yes it does

My initial thoughts was that one of the keys had a fault.

But it does happen with both keys

So, that does appear to point to the car - and whatever bit of gubbins sends/receives the key signals.

Keep us posted on what happens.

They gotta sort that. That's a real pain.

  • 1 month later...

Just replaced the battery on one of our key fobs - the one less used - 10 months :(

Battery change was a breeze thanks to a Youtube video, and I did not even need to do any coding afterwards!

  • 1 month later...

Just replaced battery after 10 months use. Followed link to video in earlier post removing cover using the key on the spare fob as a lever as it's a very tight fit, no jokes please

Joe

mine lasted 11 months.. pretty poor to be honest. Skoda need to do a firmware upgrade so that once the engine starts, there's no need for the car to be in constant communication with the FOB.  It's pointless beyond belief!!!!  Can we not all complain and start a petition or something???  I replaced my 2025 with a 2032, I will say it's a bit springy and took an age to get the bugger to stay in, and opennig the FOB wasn't as easy as on the video.. I had to get a screwdriver to open the damn thing.

The "display" is advising of key fob battery change... almost 12mths [11,749 miles] will get the correct battery & attempt to change without breaking anything !! I have seen the very helpful video clip !!  but if all fails , will have to use the spare fob.

It seems like Owners should be asking Skoda UK to ask Skoda CZ WTF is happening?

Has someone bought a load of Key Fob Batteries from some dodgy dealer selling cr4p batteries.

They really are taking the p!th at Skoda selling new cars with Batteries that are not even lasting 1 year.

Maybe at the First Service as a Goodwill Gesture Skoda should provide Dealerships with better quality batteries suitable for purpose to be

put in the key fobs free for Owner / keepers.

Since the key not only a transmitter but a transceiver, nearly 1 year battery life is pretty good imo. Plus you get a warning on the dash and replacement can be done in less than a minute. I don't really get what the problem is.

^^ Sounds like what the CEO at Skoda / VW said and the chief engineer and all the yes men / woman down the chain.

'It is only a cheap battery requiring changing more often than the car needs Variable Servicing, stuff them we are the Volkswagen Group,

who will notice.'

PS

Maybe Skoda should have Dealerships put a 3 year supply of key fob batteries in the vehicle at the PDI.

Not happened to mine yet, but speaking with a parts guy they are replacing a lot of key so looks like they key is the issue. He suggested that if I get the message up on the dash to replace the battery in the key fob to bring it into the dealership.

So far I have only seen the error via VCDS, first time I scanned it only a month or two after I bought it. I cleared the error at the time and it has not returned. I have the full KESSY but in the first year the car has only done 1800 miles, but looking though the post doesn't seam to be any link to age or use of the key, so maybe they are just duff keys.

Someone should make a key ring with an external LR20 battery holder for everyone who can't live with this major issue. :)

Like I said, there's no need for a FOB to constantly transmit an "I am here!" message to the car, whilst the car is running and drain the battery.. it makes no sense whatsoever.. it needs Skoda to make a firmware update to stop doing this.  Like I said, everyone needs to complain to Skoda as its another farce by Skoda/VAG..

Fabia 1.2 TSI SEL with keyless start.

Just changed our key batteries as the car passed 12 months old. Strangely the spare key  which has rarely been used was also showing 'Low Battery' at the same time. Replaced the Panasonic 2025 with equivalent Duracell's so hopefully might get closer to 18 months use out of them.

Purchased off E-Bay for £1.60 incl. P & P so works out at 80p per battery.

Fabia 1.2 SEL 90 Estate

Had three reminders of the car's age this morning:

1) A DVLA reminder in the post to tax the car before the end of the month (only £20, thank goodness!)

2) An email from the local dealer telling me the car is due for its first service

3) The key battery died! Hadn't had any "low battery" warnings on the console, although there have been a few "Key not found" messages. Had a stock of Duracell CR2025's handy, so we're good to go again. Be interesting to see how long the replacement lasts.

The batteries fitted at factory were usually Sony one's in the last year or so. They have been pretty poor to be honest we've had quite a lot of people in to have them changed but the replacement is a brand that i've never heard of but they seem to work fine, nobody has been back to me since they've had it changed. Also we only charge about £4 for the battery fitted so at least it's not a major cost! :)

Wow - having replaced my battery in February with a Panasonic 2032 (as it previously ran low after just 11 months).. I've this morning got inside the car and had three "key not detected messages".  How can you be running low this soon? and I've just opened the door with the bloody key, so what's wrong Fabia?   That's just 5 months!!!!! This is madness.. Skoda need to seriously fix this issue, if it's a battery one.. One battery change on a Mk1 fabia in 12.5 years.. compared to this crap... what is going on really? We deserve better than this.. this is not what I call progress..

Mine's still going strong since May '15. Not full Kessy, only, erhhh- Essy?

Guess better major brands lasts better. Also check expiry date when buying new ones.

Next year isnt OK, lithium batteries should be at least 10 yrs in the future.

Difference from CR 2025 to 2032 are 0,7 mm. The numbers ref to diameter and thickness, voltage are the same.
