Philips H16 LED Fog Lamps; Has anyone tried these?

Recommended Posts

As per the title, has any purchased/tried/got these LED fogs in their Octavia: Philips X-treme vision LED fog lamps

What are they like in terms of colour temperature compared to the xenon's, brightness (don't want so bright as to dazzle other people), and beam pattern (is it the same as the halogens?).

I can't see specifically saying they're road legal, but I also can't see the usual warning that they're for off-road use only so the beam pattern and brightness should be suitable for daily use.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I think that if you're buying these for your vrs then you'd need two sets as it has two bulbs either side compared to one for non-vrs.

Yes, two sets would be required as the vRS has 4 bulbs. Thats why I want to make sure they're good before I think about buying as they're so expensive.

And I'm concerned with the beam pattern because of the side positioning of the LED's compared with all-round of the halogens. Obviously Philips advertise it being the same but want to double check first :)

Well, I took the plunge and apprehensively ordered some, and I have to say I'm exceptionally impressed with them!

They're rated at 6000K, so look just a little 'blue-er' than the headlights, but not unpleasantly so. They're much brighter than halogens, but don't dazzle other people as the beam pattern as pretty much been maintained. They light the road up massively now, and when used for cornering fog's they're brilliant; they illuminate a good portion of the road, pavement and whatever's next to you!

They do bring up a bulb-out warning on the dash, but I hope to get this sorted soon.

They don't look unsightly in the unit either:

How exactly do you get in to change the fog light bulbs (VRS)?

I bought some flea-bay LED replacement H16 bulbs, removed the grill but couldn't find any fixings to undo to remove the lamp cluster.

I could just get my hand up the back of the lamp but was unable to remove the bulb/s.

Is it easier to remove the undertray or arch liner to gain access?

They look brilliant FE. I'd seen those on Powerbulbs and was wondering how they'd be in use. I did baulk at the price though! They look almost as bright as the xenons.

Any chance of the link where you got them from please?

Pull the little grill from under the fog light off, then as you say you can just fit your hand in to remove the bulb.

There's a clip that goes around the back of the bulb that needs to be removed first, I used the L-shaped tool from the spare wheel kit, it's hard but it comes off with effort. Be careful not to flex the bulb housing or reflector to much though. Shouldn't matter too much if you break the clip because it won't fit over the Philips LED's anyway, as they're too large. I broke one trying to get it off with my hand, but the others where I used the L-tool didn't break.

Once the clip is off the bulbs just twist loose and can be pulled out.

I had help from this thread, particularly post #11 :) http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/329159-how-do-you-fit-new-fog-light-bulbs-mk-iii-vrs/

Aren't fog lights illegal to use unless it's foggy.

It makes me very angry when I see it and normally give someone a dose of high beam..

And the numpties who insist to use the rears in rain !

rant over..

@SteveB - I totally agree with you. It absolutely boils my p!ss when I see people with fog lights switched on when it's not foggy, especially in the rain. I give them a dose of full beam too.

Why I'm personally interested in these is for cornering lights and for coming home lights.

Yes they are, when being used as fog lights. OK when used as cornering lights though.

You can also legally use fogs when its snowing heavily

Disclaimer:-  I think

I'm pretty sure (although i'd have to check) that actual fog doesn't come into it; you're permitted to use 'fog' lights when visibility is reduced to 100 meters or less.

I can't stand it when people use them to 'look well cool....innit' or as a substitute for a headlight bulb that blew 6 months ago.

I've purchased a pair of these in readiness for my new Superb. The extra illumination when used for cornering duties will be most helpful. And the standard halogen fog lights look a bit bunk alongside the xenon headlamps  :dull:

It's soooo tempting to buy these!! The only thing that annoys me about the Mk3 VRS is the mixing of halogen and LED lights! I'm slowly converting all halogens to LEDs, but those pesky front indicators sound like a PITA!! Fogs and reverse are my next projects :)

A cheaper alternative with high brightness and selectable color temp:

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Generation-2S-LED-Car-Headlight-CREE-ETI-Flip-Chips-12V-Car-Headlight-30W-3600LM-Aluminum-H8/32280572818.html

Mounted in O3:

I have this type of LED headlight in my fogs and I love them. :)

2 pcs. per side in vRS will produce brutal brightness. :D

Brightness comparison with standard H8:

Dimming not supported (the only downside):

Also I can replace 2pcs h16 with 2pcs H8 right?
