  • Well picked up my new car today... a Leon Cupra Initial verdict.... F**K its quick!! (of course it would be after a Citigo)

  • My R arrived on Friday along with my Dad's GTI!  Didn't even know there was a part two to this thread so have missed 9 pages!

  • I do sometimes think that copying and pasting (without editing) makes it awfully hard for people to instantly see what's trying to be said! Any chance of some pruning the next time please Keith?

Why not TWO Rs?!

Shame that VW are dragging their feet on the GTI Clubsport, that would have been a good combo contrast! Imo

Well, got round to a test drive of a 5dr manual R, the closest to home being the dreaded Arnold Clark. 65 plate with 2k miles on the clock.

Set off in comfort mode on the main roads in town then got chance to go to race mode for A roads and one junction of the motorway.

Having driven the 330d the day before I was interested to see what the R was all about. Compared to the beemer, the R interior was down on quality but what mattered came to light.

What an easy to drive car in comfort mode for day to day use but in race mode if changed from Dr Jeckyl to Mr Hide!! The acceleration in that thing is mind blowing, all the way to the red line, the handling on our twisty and narrow back roads inspired confidence. What a beast! For an everyday car I would have one of these over the beemer any day, much as I lived that with the 6 cylinder.

Age is but a number tell your old man- I'm a Silver Surfer as well.

Jrw, give that R a good run-in, it will pay dividends!

Believe me, its going to get a dam good run in! It's not been out of race yet. It stunk when I got to my mates earlier!

Perhaps you and I are not singing off the same Run-in hymn sheet, may be it's because I'm an old fart. (like the old man)

You are obviously enjoying!

(SWMBO & I are also in our late 60's, & I've been silver for 20+ years.)

Serious questions, does the R demand better than 95 octane fuel, &, if driven in a manner suitable to our great age, is 30 mpg possible?

Both our now departed Octy vRS & my still current Superb show 35+mpg as the long-term averages, but we don't have to spend much time in

heavy traffic, which must help. The Octy managed 36+ coming home from Norwich last week, cruising in the 70- 80's, on the A11-M11-M25 route but 39 on the

way up via the A12 & A140. ( Very slow road, about 40 miles, limited to 50 mph or less, so very economical, but really frustrating.)

Agreed, running-in used to mean treating the new car gently for the 1st 1000 or so miles.

Maybe the rules have changed?

Tesco 99 Momentum(£1.04/ltr) is very good , fall back Sainsbury's 97 for me locally. I'm no slouch and my hatch averaged over 17k miles 35 mpg across all modes. Running -in is still key no matter what "Modern"enginnering says. That is one thing this old fart is an experience. Believer. Progress revs increasing gradually up to say 4k mile. With the odd warm blip to 4-5k rpm in small burst, does the trick.

AFAIK VW just says 95 or higher. I ran mine virtually fist 4k miles on Morrison's 95RON only done last 2k miles on Tesco momentum 99 RON. TBH not really noticed any difference.

The great thing with an R is you can pootle around all day long in Eco mode and get plus 30mpg or have a bit of a blast every now and then and get around 28mpg average.

Looking really nice, mine is white too and it just looks really clean and uncluttered.

Enjoy them :)

I really like the standard wheels, they have really grown on me but could easily live with some 19" Pretoria's :)

Edited by Defenderben

Nah, you don't need to run them in nowadays. Better to go through the rev range when oil up to temp to bed the pistons in. I never use a drop of oil on any of my cars. Proven method. After all they've been thrashed by vw Germany, the port guys, the dealers and the pdi people. Mine and my dad's had been running for 5 hours by the time we got them.

I'm totally opposite in that I think the standard wheels look rhubarb and I'd much prefer (if they did them) the Pretoria's in 18"!

As nice as the six in the 330d is... It's still a diesel. Any petrol performance car will likely sound better and rev harder and higher.

For a true comparison with the R you'd need to compare it to a straight-six petrol car imho. If you liked the motor on the 330d you would absolutely love 335/340i. The petrol straight six in the M135i I had made an immense noise :-)

My test drive showed an average mpg on the on board computer of 19! Wtf!

^^^^ Did you reset the computer for your test drive?

Every demo car I get into I always reset things to let it give me a proper indication of what I can do; not what all the potential racers did before me.

If you did reset it and achieved 19 mpg, I can only say you must of had a great time :)

I easily get 28-30 mpg bearing in mind we do not have a motorway, so all my driving is fast country roads and town work.

Edited by Defenderben

Mine is currently on 20 mpg!

I did stick it in eco on way home last night to get that figure up, I got 34 mpg on that run!

It is new, and probably has 95 fuel in it as it came with a full tank and I was having a good old 'test' of the car!!

I must admit I forgot but mistakenly thought it would reset after being stood a while in the forecourt! I DID give it the beans a few times when safe to do so, so that's good news about realistic mpg you've observed.

Good advice in my book.

Have you had a look through you cars manual yet and see what VW advise?

Perhaps not?

I downloaded the current VW manual last night &, lo & behold, there are some quite specific "recommendations" in the running-in section.

If I were to be spending my own cash on one of these cars, (or a similar Skoda even !) I'd take heed rather than ruin a car that i just might want to

keep for a few years.

It's just generic running in as has always been. They're just covering themselves that's all.

I've bought my car outright. I'm driving it how it's designed to be driven. I make sure it's warmed up and cooled down. No issues with any of my cars.

Each to their own I guess, just the  "old fart" of an engineer in me.

Enjoy! This little success against the hyper: https://youtu.be/2aAkkAfIyA4

Edited by vrskeith

I'm no engineer and folks will do what they want at the end of the day in terms of their running in procedure. If I were buying I'd be inclined to go 'old school' but to be fair I'll contradict myself and say that the engine should be taken through the full rev range whilst the engine is new, just so long as not too much time is spent at very high revs. There were very similar debates for sports bikes when I used to ride but the chances of being able to use anywhere near full throttle on cars or bikes on the road, certainly for any length of time, is slim, the only problems might be track days for example. So I say, crack on!
