New Golf R - Part 2

Featured Replies

For some reason I seem to remeber rightly or wrongly manufactures put 0-60 figures that were often difficult to acheive in real world tests, bit like their mpg figures.

Nice to see a recorded 0-60 of 4.6 seconds :)

Surprising how big the gap is on the road between them.

  • Well picked up my new car today... a Leon Cupra Initial verdict.... F**K its quick!! (of course it would be after a Citigo)

  • My R arrived on Friday along with my Dad's GTI!  Didn't even know there was a part two to this thread so have missed 9 pages!

  • I do sometimes think that copying and pasting (without editing) makes it awfully hard for people to instantly see what's trying to be said! Any chance of some pruning the next time please Keith?

I just read recently - perhaps on here! - that the EP3 Type-R in particular is difficult to hit the claimed 0-60 time in - you need to get the gear changes spot on.

Mind you looking at the TG video they didn't pitch them all equal with DSG or Manuals. They are a mix which isn't really 100% fair for comparison.

DSG does provide pretty epic seamless gear changes though :)

Vw group under estimate their figures for 0 to 60. You can easily beat them.

The figures are achievable and on 95 Octane fuel, with decent tyres on a decent surface at a decent temperature, and it should be at

most altitudes.

It does not mean all drivers can do it though in a manual car or even an automated manual (DSG).

It should not require Launch Control and TC off etc, but funnily often thats the only way some drivers will get the VW times.

This is a driver that knows what to do, and yet does not get VW times.

(New cars, but then who said they had to be used and 'Driven in'.)

*If you can not get the time with one person in the car, whats the chance with a car at the Revenue weight,

ie, Full Tank of fuel some luggage and 300 kg or so of passengers in a car.*

Would the Golf R benefit from the Aerodynamic improvements applied to the Recently Launched GTI Clubsport?

Plus the an additional 10 BHP and torque uplift for the Upgraded S3 also announced yesterday. Or is VW leaving the Best upgrade to last with an R subtle face lift and power enhancements .Not therefore going for the R400 Ultimate game changer that was once perceived!!??

Never driven an S3 to know if it is how matey describes it. Each to their own, not everyone likes the same things.

Repeating what I have said previously, driven both back to back, neighbour has the S3 hatch very similar to my old R Hatch. My Partners neighbour has got the S3 manual and we thought it a good ideal to do a well known local A,B & C road run across Wiltshire. In short

We both concluded ,that the R was much sharper on throttle response and better handling on the twisty but quick and challenging roads.

Didn't find a great deal of difference on internal engine noise, synthetic or not. Both cars were driven in Normal Mode on the main run. However,in a shortish blast in Sport Mode, the R was even sharper on the tight stuff. Please note, we had both at that stage had about 10k miles experience in our own cars. So I would suggest a very good base line to start for the comparison.

The S3 may be a posher place to sit inside (marginal imo) but the R's sports seats were much better at securing and giving the driver a much more stable place to execute the brisk drive with twists and turns, under speed and increasing G.

Unbiased but constructive conclusion by both parties but Dave still has his S3 - an Audi man and he would be the first to admit it he would probably say the converse about me.

However, a great time was enjoyed by us both.

Since that time I have,on my own done the same test in my now acquired R Estate. God my manual Hatch was bloody good and a bit more fun but not massively different under paddle control.

It will interesting to experience the soon to be slightly tweaked upgraded S3. However, not sure if the handling will be improved,as only read about hike in power and torque.

I had a short drive in an S3 saloon last weekend, didn't have enough time to push the car but it felt nice, but cramped & overpriced.

To bring one up to the same level of toys & goodies that I have on my Superb would take the list price up to $42/43K.

Their PCP deals are quite good of course, Audi residuals are quite high, but there was nothing about the car that would persuade me to have one.

Also went out with a heavy-footed friend in a Golf R estate later in the afternoon & that seemed to be more fun for him, even though he's not a DSG person!

SWMBO thinks I should (if I so desire) replace either the EOS or the Superb with a new(er) car, but it's proving quite difficult to find one.

The new Golf GTi Clubsport is nearly as expensive as an R, the vRS 230 is much cheaper & has nice goodies + could easily be tweaked for more performance, but

it doesn't have the quality feel of either of my current steeds.

Add to the equation the fact that both of my cars a way under mileage for their age, give very acceptable economy & with 250 ps each can keep up

with the traffic quite well, it's very hard to justify spending perhaps £25K+ to replace one of them.

I really wish that Skoda were had permission (from VAG) to build a quicker& better quality vRS, using the power-train from the Superb 280  with similar

quality interior materials, I'd be one of their 1st customers!

Interesting questions, only the future will bring the answers though...........

Thought it was worth a predictable share to the link lol

If they did the price would be really high tho

This would be a lovely upgrade for the Golf R ,rather than the 10 bhp being added to the S3 shortly.

"The 2017 Volkswagen Polo R World Rally Championship car has teased in a concept sketch.

The manufacturer claims its next season's rally car will be 25kg lighter and 50mm wider than the 2016 model, and the power output will be bumped up by 59bhp to 375bhp." Autocar 12/04/2016

This power increase is the result of the air restrictor being widened from 33mm to 36mm, according to the manufacturer, while the most evident visual changes are in the front and rear spoilers, which are larger and broader respectively.

Oh! It's only a Polo:

I do miss my manual hatch at times!

Did anyone make the crazy Golf R estate PCH lease deals the other week?

VW love dropping in these fantastic offers for a few days only, so far we've had the Golf R hatchback, VW Passat Alltrack and recently the Golf R estate.

Fantastic car for £3K a year or £250 per month.

Shame the R estate has to make do with normal rear lights not smoked leds

Totally agree with you blueR36.

All the hatches GTD/GTI & R get them but crappy looking normal lamps on the estate is a big let down and takes away any premium look for me :(

someone is picking them up, I'm seeing Golf Rs everywhere now.

Are two of the four tailpipes on the estate fake? Saw an R estate parked up near me the other day and it looked like it had two false pipes! Although I was driving past so didn't get a very good look

Hmm, yeah, standard rear lights do look a bit of a cop-out...

They are pretty cool on the hatch...

. No they are all real but like the S3 on moderate throttle only inner ones are used , then on full throttle a flap opens to use all . That's why inners are car boned up and outers clean do look false like vRS mk3 diesels!

Sorry but they're fake on the estate. No flaps for some reason.

Big thread about it a month or so back on vwroc!
