New Golf R - Part 2

Featured Replies

EU Testing and Co2 / VED Band is a bit of a wonder that VW / Audi can only answer when the real world MPG is so poor on

the more powerful versions of the Golf / A3 (S3) even when driven in a not sporting manner.

We know that the Tests are only Comparisons between vehicles, but they are so off as to be a fairy story.

  • Well picked up my new car today... a Leon Cupra Initial verdict.... F**K its quick!! (of course it would be after a Citigo)

  • My R arrived on Friday along with my Dad's GTI!  Didn't even know there was a part two to this thread so have missed 9 pages!

  • I do sometimes think that copying and pasting (without editing) makes it awfully hard for people to instantly see what's trying to be said! Any chance of some pruning the next time please Keith?

Driving it like you stole it was fine 30years ago, now I'm a little wiser and value my licence, job and do not want to cheese off other road users.

Do not get me wrong it gets a dammed good blast when the conditions allow but 90% of the time I'm sat in a queue of traffic travelling at about 40 mph and Eco or individual mode suits fine, a quick pull back on the lever throws it straight into Sport if needed :)

Putting my foot down and blasting past people only to get them sat beside me a mile down the road at the next set of lights has happened too often, hence being a little wiser ;)

Welcome to the real driving world!

If we didn't live in S.East England, & moved to one of the quieter parts of the UK, or maybe another country, then maybe we could extend a Golf R to it;s limits every

time it was used.

But we don't live there, so we've chosen a useful car, with decent quality & the ability to cope with "normal" driving conditions, but with the capability to entertain us if

we happen to find ourselves in the (mythical?) land of good driving roads & no speed limits.

So, in the eyes of some people we've chosen the wrong car, but it's our money & our age if we don't spend it now..............

DC,

You could always have this one ,same colour as mine, with 19" but not sure if it has DCC to improve the ride / handling.

Option and Toys, nice to have or essential?

Some options are "essential" for me, I don't want to loose some of the nice toys that were std. equipment on my Superb.

One of them is an power memory drivers seat & door mirrors, (makes swapping drivers so much easier), & that's not available on any Golf!

Back to a Superb 280 or vRS 230 ?

I do take on board the comments about normal mode but find individual with all the Eco settings it is much slower to go into coasting mode and so is not really full Eco as such.

I'll give you another fact about the ECO mode on the "R"...Gen 4 Haldex has ECO mode, your car has Gen5...

Gen 4 Haldex totally decouples the rear & runs as a frontwheel drive car only & coasts the gearbox more...good chance the Gen5 will also...as it is more fuel efficient than previous versions.

If you spend 90% of your time (as you say) in Eco mode then the "R" is not the car for you, might as well bought a cheaper front wheel drive car with a smaller engine...

You might as well stay in a Mobile Home and pay no Council Tax and drive a Light Commercial Vehicle as a Daily Driver, deal in scrap and tar driveways or not  and park your Range Rover or Mercedes up for special days.

But luckily people have choices where to live, what to drive etc.

Not disputing that people can & regularly do spend their money in items & never use them....

I just think it's a crying shame when cars don't get used as they were designed for...have a big fancy fast car like a Lambo, or Ferrari & it never gets the engine stretched poor thing must be dying...at least buy a couple of track day passes for it & use it....

Just pointing out though that this person bought an "R" & may not realise that the safety net of the 4WD is NOT there when you put the car in ECO mode, & as he drives 90% of his time with it in this mode for fuel consumption reasons, he would be better of driving a FWD car as that will have even better fuel consumption as he is not lugging around an unused 4WD system all the time....

VW Group Sorted it for people in lots of cars.

No Spare tyre to carry around 100% of the time for that once or maybe never in a lifetime needed.

Saved 20 KG.

Then fit ECO Tyres that are on 100% of the time and bloddy poor lots of the time, and might need changing 1/3 of the year.

Estate cars, bigger / roomier / heavier/ sometimes given faster official Top Speeds because of the longer roof,

and if it is More Expensive than the Hatch Version.

Everyone would be best driving a small economical hatch back and buying or hire a faster and nicer car when they want.

Or

Maybe just buy a 300PS VW / Audi,  they only cost a couple of grand more than the lesser models.

Near the same as some lesser models that people buy to save running costs by buying.

In the case of the "R" estate the cost difference between the "R" & the next petrol model down (mine) in the same spec as mine based on current book prices is £37,885 compared to £30,195...admittedly £1,415 of that difference is the fact the R has the DSG only & mine has the 6spd manual. So a genuine £6,275 difference. If I spent 90% of my time driving an "R" estate in ECO 2wd mode (for fuel consumption reasons) I really would be wasting money, fuel etc. compared to a car more suited to my actual driving needs...

In the case of a hatch it is £3,690 (3dr manual GTI & R) & you lower your tax band from G to E & mpg figures (quoted) are approx. 30/48/39 ( R ) & 37/55/47 (GTI)...he would be better of driving a GTI as he spends 90% of his time driving the R in strangled 2WD mode...

So ever so slightly more than the "couple of grand" difference you assumed....

No thats RRP's  not what they cost to buy there are plenty of offers, often better value discounts on the higher priced models,

and many are not buying anyway, just renting them and returning them as nice used cars.

Strangled ECO mode is some joke surely.

Have you had one out for a sotty yet?

?

Do you think a Golf R in ECO Mode will feel strangled driving the Average Speed Camera route from Inverness to Stirling?

Take alternate routes and a 150ps Fat Golf can be fun, but then so can a Fat Golf R with 300ps.

.....................................

Strangled Mode is what the VW Group thought they would get away with on 11 Million TDI's with the Fix.

&

then Co2 Irregularities and false Co2 / MPG's with VW / Audi / Seat Petrol & Diesels Euro 6 vehicles and cheating the Treasury or Taxes.

60 MPH NSL in the UK and some 70 MPH limits, hardly an issue what you drive really is it,

they all keep up with the traffic on modern roads, and able to overtake an Agricultural Vehicle is a major issue for many,

having more power is not always an answer or the solution.

Where we live it is a pity a Camera Van might be sitting at the one possible bit of road where you might be able to do that and end up exceeding the NSL or posted speed for that road.

No sh1te Sherlock....but that is the only way to do a comparison. Yes you can get expensive new/dealer only miles cars on good discounts, BUT that car will still have higher maintenance, insurance, tax costs, all based in the original manufactures RRP & cars features such as the 4WD which he only uses 10% of the time.

I know someone who got a nice RS4 used, perfect condition, very good second hand price.. but had a heart attack when he had to replace the ceramic discs...I did remind him that he was maintaining a car that originally sold for "X" amount & that he really ought to think of it in those terms & not the I got a bargain costing "Y". Got rid of it with in a year after that due to not being able to run an "expensive" car.

Seriously if he's worried about saving on the fuel consumption you don't get a high performance hot hatch with a 4WD system...the idea with cars like that is that you are NOT bothered by the fuel consumption..

Touchy.

Can you remind us which Golf Estate you bought and its current trade in or used value?

Is there a thread running on your type of Golf?

I take it as you got the Cream of the crop at the time you did it is holding its value better than those that came after it.

EDIT.

Sorry i see at the bottom of your posts which model it is.

?

What was the Full Price on those new as quoted by the VW Dealerships.

Mine was supposed to be RRP at £29,180 back in June 2014, however I got a good discount IMO as I knew the salesman & dealer.

BTW I got my calcs wrong on the Estate as the GT (mine) now has 18" alloys & pano as standard, so add the cost of the Pano to the "R" & the true difference is now £7270 ..

PS I don't care about resale values as I buy my cars cash & keep them long term, I kept my Fabia from new to 14yrs, I intend to keep this for at least 10yrs...

That is what many do then.

Buy what they need or want and buy a keeper, or lease one.  Some get cars when available because what comes later are not always better.

Sometimes Early models, mid life are better than last in that models life.

Plenty Euro 5 Engines are more desirable than the Euro 6.

(some Euro 4 a better buy than those that followed them.)

Pays your money and makes your choices.

I see in a post on this forum someone asking about new Skoda vRS Octavia TDI coming with Smaller Discs than the previous models.

VW are going to be repricing their range of new cars / Brands anyway and discounting stuff already build to get lots sold.

No point trying to keep it looking like sales have not dropped when Customers are not actually handing over money to Dealers of Finance Companies that VW own.

Not sure I ever mentioned run it in Eco mode for better mpg?

Eco or individual with my settings suits 90% of my driving in and around my local city driving and my commute in the country.

Also living on Dartmoor the 4x4 has its uses plus I genuinely drive in fields alot :)

Perhaps I should think about moving out of my massive house with lots of spare bedrooms, as I do not use it to its full potential :)

I've worked since 16, never not had a job, done my bit for Queen & Country and had a mid life crisis and bought a 300bhp car, it was cheaper than getting rid of my wife ;)

Just enjoy what you have.

The first post is the one I was referring to...

Anyway at least you are now aware that in ECO mode (ECO throttle also I think in individual settings) the car decouples the Haldex & makes it 2WD only......

I live in a big house too.....trouble is the double garage is a workshop, so can fit one car in...& one of the spare rooms is a kit room for all my ski mountaineering/climbing etc gear...so only one clear room left for guests..

Mind you I suppose I could just fold down the rear seats & sleep in the back of the car....

So where's the holiday booking form, for the guest room? ;)

:p

Loving this one.

I would be wanting it in a nice simply Silver and looking more Factory.

ie Real Q-Car bit like a very fast Yeti that a Brisky member has.

I'd keep the Red, maybe anthracite wheels, but otherwise I'd love it.

As you say, a real Q car!

Don't know if it could be insured in the UK though.

DC

Anything can be insured, and not automatically expensive, you just need to get an underwriter.

BTW The above video is a MK6 Golf..not a MK7

Anyway I had earlier mentioned Milltek exhausts for the "R" estate...

If I had an "R" estate I would be very unhappy with Milltek as their £1,500plus back box system uses the original VW fake tips!!!..

WTF???

Why hasn't anyone done as per the VW test car?...Single each side "real" tip.

So if we want to disguise the fake tips, 'cos they will always look too clean, should we buy some heat-proof black paint

& apply it to all four tips?

As for spending £1.5k to replace a brand new exhaust system, no way Jose!

Think and I can live with my R Estate as it is. Best VFM Hot Estate Around imho of course. Oh! The fart from my exhausts are quite endearing in their way.  For for those that like a little warble and not bangs, crackles , pops and all that jazz, its  fine and very much liveable.

I'm looking forward to the experience, but if the "fart" only occurs at high rpms, or wide throttle openings it'll be some weeks away before we hear it!

TBO I know it sounds cheap, but after seeing that pic, just rip the VW tip trims off & fit a stainless/chrome single tip sleeve like these over the exit pipe from the back box!
