New Golf R - Part 2

Featured Replies

. No they are all real but like the S3 on moderate throttle only inner ones are used , then on full throttle a flap opens to use all . That's why inners are car boned up and outers clean do look false like vRS mk3 diesels!

This R estate had shiny inner pipes and dirty outer ones.

Just had a look on VWROC - the inner two pipes on the R estate are definitely fake :-(

Hope that for the adrenaline fuelled Exhaust Noise Junkies, that don't own a Golf R Estate I hope this will help.

Otherwise as an Owner I couldn't give a monkeys.

Totally agree with you blueR36.

All the hatches GTD/GTI & R get them but crappy looking normal lamps on the estate is a big let down and takes away any premium look for me :(

I'm sure those desperate Golf R Estates owners who must have the LED rear tail lights, will find an OEM or Non OEM supply source to enable them to scratch their itch!

Otherwise ,as a Golf R Estate owner, it does everything it says on the tin!

So noise is okay for an Old Fart and as for rear tail lights, well it went passed so quickly I couldn't  spot the difference!!

Liked the guys summary of the R Estate, Note ! It carries a wide heavy load.lol

Not that this Old Frat continues to be biased - Hatch or Variant.

I don't think it's the noise that's the issue. In fact some people say the exhaust on the estate actually sounds better than the hatch version :-)

It's the look / embarrassment factor that has aggravated some owners / potential owners on VWROC. I can see why VW did it though - to keep the quad-pipe 'R' theme going from hatch to estate. Fair play to those not bothered by it. I wouldn't be thrilled about it though. Would look to swap the stock system for something with a nice meaty single exhaust exit/pipe on each side.

The reason it has the four pipes is to match the hatch, however the size of the two rear back boxes is vastly greater than the hatch so the sound levels are more controlled so no need for fancy exhaust flaps to meet the sound regs...

However I do wish they had flipping well done as they did with the test car which had a single oval each side...& Milltek make it worse by not offering this option on theirs either...

AS for the rear lights they are different to the standard S/ SE spec & are the cherry red ones from the GT spec...like the gloss black dash panels from the GT...

Serious question, which it the quieter, (in std. form) the R estate or the hatch?

Being old farts, we quite like cars that can be quiet, especially when pootling around in traffic!

Our EOS exhaust can just about be heard inside the car with the roof up, but the Superb, even with it's factory

standard quad pipe (all dirty, so all working!) is quiet all the time.

I'll admit to being confuzzled by this talk of flaps in the R systems, do they open / get louder at a particular engine speed

or throttle openig, or are they linked to the driving mode selections?

Yes to both questions...

I didn't find the R hatch any louder than a normal Golf with a normal petrol engine tbh.

It is just a 2.0 petrol with a few trick bits. Theres no burbling growling V8 under there :D

Not saying it doesn't do as it says on the tin, just normal estate lamps on the Premier model was a let down IMO from the IMO really nice maintenance free LED units of the Premier hatches.

The only light on the hatch that lets the side down is the crappy yellowish filament festoon lamp in the boot.

With respect to noise, my hatch in all but race/sport mode and driven sensible is no louder than any other petrol Golf and is very understated, the GTI stands out much more visually than an "R" IMO.

As someone else said the R looks like a Golf 1.4tsi R line ;)

It's going to be SWMBO's car, & your info is v.useful. She / we quite like nippy cars, but prefer them to be understated.

My old Octy vRS was Black, usually grubby & but most other motorists thought it was just another mini-cab.

As for noise, if we can get the soundaktor switched off we will be happy.with the real engine & exhaust sounds0

Dave, having own a manual hatch and now an Estate, the exhaust note /Soundaktor is pretty much the same in Normal mode, which is what I'm driving in for 80%of the time

However, with the Estate DSG you get the addition of a variable fart enhancement, linked to gear changes ,for whatever engineering or designers desired reason.

As for rear or front standard light bulbs failure or maintenance, in both Skodas or VW's normally owned for approx. 3 - 4 years maximum ,I have never had a failure / replacement.

Obviously good quality OEM product.

As for exhaust pipes, I don't really have a visually anal problem , looking at them!

DC, hope this helps, should you and the better half feel it needs toning down.

Thanks Keith.

If it can't be tweaked through VCDS, then it's probably the only way!

Thanks again Keith.

It's a lovely colour, but we can't have two identical (looking) cars, we would be even more confuzzled than we are now!

It's quite a good discount from list, but is sadly lacking in options / toys.....

i wonder why it's for sale, it's only been registered for less than a month?

DC,

You could always have this one ,same colour as mine, with 19" but not sure if it has DCC to improve the ride / handling.

When out today, I noticed one other difference to the Hatch manual or DSG  previously mentioned fart , the R Estate also has an interesting and not unattractive  Warble !

TBH in all but race mode, I do not really notice the soundgator thing. I spend a lot of time in individual mode, which I have set all the Eco things on but allow the bending lights & slow speed turn lights :)

Think the soundgator is also set to its lowest setting too.

Why have an "R" if you leave it in ECO mode? :x

Put it in normal & get better fuel consumption as ECO mode kills it & increases fuel consumption it is what people are saying on MK7 forums...

I don't know how you can drive it like that as even on my car it makes the throttle dead....calling engine room is there anyone there? pedal is to the metal & feck all happens as it basically slows down the response....to such an extent that if felt way slower than my old less powerful Fabia!! Steering is better in sport also, I like direct, however I did alter the response timing in VCDS (forgot what line of code) & it is very directional & proportional.

I can understand not having it in Race mode, but having driven an R......ECO mode is an anathema to its very existence....

Having said that I am glad I found out what the "R" estate was going to be like & got my car which has three distinct advantages over the "R" estate in my personal preference.

1.Manual gearbox

2.Tungsten silver metallic paintwork

3. my driving licence....

However my mate across the road still has his in bad need of TLC, MK4 R32......3.2lt V6.....& proper twin exhaust.....you want burble?......what I would do to that car.......bye bye licence...

Funnily a 300ps vehicle being driven in ECO mode can be quite Economical and still get along quite well in the traffic,.

and is a bit different from a 150ps vehicle on ECO mode.

A car that suits many different days, journeys and uses can be used in different modes.

a 300 ps car can be driven as you like when you like,

a 150ps car might need to be getting given some to get a shift on if thats what you want.

Driving it like you stole it was fine 30years ago, now I'm a little wiser and value my licence, job and do not want to cheese off other road users.

Do not get me wrong it gets a dammed good blast when the conditions allow but 90% of the time I'm sat in a queue of traffic travelling at about 40 mph and Eco or individual mode suits fine, a quick pull back on the lever throws it straight into Sport if needed :)

Putting my foot down and blasting past people only to get them sat beside me a mile down the road at the next set of lights has happened too often, hence being a little wiser ;)

Not suggesting you do, just it adversely affects the fuel consumption compared to being in normal as people are commenting on MK7 forums..

Personally I prefer to have total control over the engine with my right foot....sticking it in ECO strangles it & if you need to get out of the way in an emergency the throttle response in ECO is so slow as it is purposefully delayed...

Generally returning 30mpg and the nearest dual carriageway is about 16 miles each way so most of my time is single A or B roads and being Devon,

It's lots of hills.

I do take on board the comments about normal mode but find individual with all the Eco settings it is much slower to go into coasting mode and so is not really full Eco as such.

Same here, except north of Scotland, I get minimum 42mpg to 48mpg & its in Sport all the time & I use Shell Nitro......on a "fast" 2hr drive over the best drivers road in UK (which included Grantown to Braemar which is my local one) I get about 38mpg....
