New Golf R - Part 2

Featured Replies

Got to see the R up close yesterday. At the Meon meet an R estate has just been bought. I can see why people like it, it seemed a really good all-rounder and looks very understated as well. Not so sure on the engine noise but as someone at the meet put it, sounds like a rep mobile but goes like **** of a chrome shovel.

Thoroughly impressed.

  • Well picked up my new car today... a Leon Cupra Initial verdict.... F**K its quick!! (of course it would be after a Citigo)

  • My R arrived on Friday along with my Dad's GTI!  Didn't even know there was a part two to this thread so have missed 9 pages!

  • I do sometimes think that copying and pasting (without editing) makes it awfully hard for people to instantly see what's trying to be said! Any chance of some pruning the next time please Keith?

The quieter & less obvious the better for me.

My old Octy vRS was quite nippy, but black & very rarely washed, most other drivers thought it was a minicab.

Much fun..............

I saw my first R estate tonight - hmmm - didn't look quite right to me, but may just take a bit of getting used to. It didn't help that the driver was being a complete fandan - came off a roundabout in a 30 zone and booted it - only to have to hit the anchors a very short distance later when he caught up with the car in front.

My little 1er had a recommended run in period of 1,400 miles. usual no large throttle inputs, high revs (think it was around 4,5k maximum) or labouring and try not to sit at one speed all day. I'll never see those fuel consumption figures again :(

Maybe not but we don't buy cars like that for their fuel consumption! Got to have a few vices in life and have an occasional hoon around!

For me that would mean a five-month run-in period!

Although if I had an M 135 I think there would be a sharp spike in my monthly mileage.

Personally I'd say it sounds a little bit better than a rep mobile, but I do have a vested interest. Why I let sam take it for a drive I am not sure, but he seemed to like it.

A member is currently placing an order for one of these in the same Limestone Grey colour - real subtle Q look imp.

I saw a Limestone Grey one yesterday - that's the colour I'd go for - as you say, very low profile.

It does sound better with the pops and bangs of the exhaust...

I'm not sure either really, it smelt rather warm and nicely run in afterwards, very surprised with the key though!

If Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 are that good will VW be offering these as an option for the R?

Or are Michelin locked into Ford exclusivity agree.

Seem to recall  the VW at the Press Launch of the GTI Clubsport that they were mentioned as an option.

However, no spec of the Clubsport has been issued to Dealerships yet.

Are they overkill for day to day running?

Edited by vrskeith

I would probaly say that the cups are probably overkill for daily use, personally I would just go for the standar MPS, unless you intend spending some time on track.

Yep, no news on the Clubsport yet, but I couldn't live with a three door as I still need the space from time to time. Plus there is something about an estate that I like.

Yes, it was a little warm when it came back, but Sam is probably the only person I would trust with my car. I was also interested to see what would happen when he drove off with me having the key in my pocket. Apparently it was just bonging in the cabin and saying the key was not in range.

May be in VW speak no means Yes. Lets wait and see if pressure from Focus RS and may be others yet to arrive change their minds.

Glass half full time!

They won't. They're already developing the mk 8. It'll just be run out editions as always, leather as standard, different wheels, more options to empty the parts bins. Vw are nothing if not predictable.

I will of course acknowledge your superior knowledge on the subject of the R development / future.

So that looks like 3 years to have a chat with Oettinger or the like then. Even though a planned general facelift due 2016/17 whatever that brings.

Hope jrw you are enjoying your purchase and your dad aswell after your first couple of weeks.

Don't have superior knowledge but if there was going to be a facelift which they've never done before it would have been announced at Geneva last week and it wasn't so I would say it's highly unlikely.

My dad has only been out in his twice, he doesn't want to get it dirty lol.

I've done 200 miles in mine and used 3 quarters of a tank!!

Leaks come from one place and that is the Volkswagen Group themselves, they leak the stories and the drawings and any sightings

that the media get are because the VWG want them released.

If they just released facts and dates then all would be good, but as it is they do not even know if the VW Group will be split

into different divisions by next year let alone which engines they will have to meet the EU Testing in the real world in a couple of years.

I am now really considering getting shot of my lease which was on a 24m, 10k deal. It now has 12m left and 8k left and it is £309 a month, over mileage cost is low at 7p if more miles are needed.

Spec is DSG, Lapiz blue and heated seats, car was recently serviced at 10k.

Condition of car is new bare one tiny scratch on 1 alloy.

If anyone is seriously interested get in touch and we can go from there.

Do you have a clause in your lease plan that allows you to buy the car, or is the lease company good for such things?
